Join the mighty Double Reeds! Double reeds, by the way, are ... much better looking than clarinets. ... the real woodwinds. (flutes & saxes are made of metal!!!) ... rock your face. Off. ... the voice of choice for a solo. mrgreen Join the group? You know you love us. wink

Unsure what to say? Here are some discussion topics:
Marching Band: -What do you play/spin during marching season? -Have you ever tried to march with a double reed? Concert Band: -Ever had a solo? Describe! -What's the best/worst you've ever done at All-Region, All-Area, All-State, ect.? -Favorite peices! Reeds: -What kind/size reed do you use? -Do you make your own reeds? Tips, Fingerings, Hints: -How to effectively swab? sweatdrop -What to do in a worst eek case senario -Make it sharper, flatter? Randomness: -Wierd traditions of your school -Favorite other instrument -Band jokes! -How wierd is your band director??

Marching: I don't even want to talk about marching with a bassoon. My BD made me play in pep band (we don't march) and I had to stand up. In the bleachers. Without a neckstrap, which I hate anyway.
Concert: We're playing the Four Scottish Dances, which is veryveryvery hard on the poor bassoonist, especially since she's only been playing for two years. sweatdrop
Reeds: Danzi Standards, heavily pared down and adjusted. Pros are easier to play with, but standards are cheaper and I can fiddle with them until they sound just as good.
Tips, Fingerings, Hints: I use a chain swab, which really helps. There's a certain trick to it, but it's kind of hard to describe. Worst case scenario? BDs almost never really know what they're doing with double reeds (especially English horn or contra), so you can make it up! To make things sharper or flatter I usually bite (which is bad) or move around on the reed, depending on how tired I am.
Randomness: My favorite other instrument is the cello. Because I play it. Where's my favorite band joke site? I love it. *hunts*

I'm a bassoonist and have been playing for 10 years. I played in pit during my marching band career, didn't like it much at first, but it grew on me, especially playing marimba... 3nodding
Right now I'm using a reed my bassoon professor made, but normally I use danzi reeds. I've never tried marching with a bassoon, though I have stood and played a couple times. I have tried walking around once while playing, I wasn't very good at it. sweatdrop

I play bassoon, yes, but I'm allowed to bash on saxes a bit because I march with them. If you're a flute/clarinet, why did you even open this topic? cool

Y'know, the store-bought kind that you have to soak and soak and soak and then scrape to get to sound any good. smile I use a chain swab, but I didn't know that there was any other kind of bassoon swab! eek Where have I been? My BDs are odd. One plays clarinet, one plays trumpet, and one plays percussion... but they all think they know exactly how to make a bassoon sound better. I have to admit, the clarinet one does. But the others are clueless. Which goes to show how much smarter woodwinds are. twisted

Unfortunately, I can't get him for a teacher this year and my BDs won't hire one to come to the school. So I have to completely rearrange a Jones reed for an okay sound. sweatdrop

Well, you know, any store bought reed is bad because they are made by machines without any knowledge of who's gonna play on them. You have to slice them up to fit your individual style. Anyway, I'm a sophomore in high school and I've been playing since 6th grade... about 4 years. So take or leave what I say, because I obviously don't have your experiance. sweatdrop

Let's see... last year one of our concert peices was called "A Movement for Rosa" and I had the bassoon part in the bassoon-alto sax duet at the beginning. I liked that one. This year we're working on a peice called "Festive Overature" which I'm really excited about. There's not a whole lot of imagination in the bassoon part, but I like it a lot anyway. I haven't really done a lot of bassoon solo peices, and the bassoon ensembles I've been in weren't anything special. But what about you, musically?

Let's see...I recall sightreading "A Movement for Rosa" for ensemble contest my junior or senior year, I remember that it was a really nice piece. A couple of my favorite band pieces I've played would have to be Holst's "First Suite in Eb" and "Lincolnshire Posy" by Percy Grainger. Both are wonderful pieces, especially if played in a smaller group. Some bassoon pieces I've played are the first movement of the Weber concerto, Telemann Sonata in F minor, and the David Concertino.
