This is probably just a dose of common sense, but we all need that from time to time sooo:
If you're creating a story that's canon (trying to make it as accurate as possible to the original developer's vision) -- don't expect other people to know what you're talking about right away, or if at all. In fact, it's always much better to assume that your audience has no idea what you're talking about.
It can be hard to get into character of some things if you're not familiar with the original TV show or whatever, but sometimes people will still want to join. Sooo I think to compromise, it's better for them to get roughly familiar with the main characters and then make-up everything from there.
Hopefully if people are too confused as to what you're talking about (and most of the anime-ish stuff gets pretty out there), they simply won't join. But sometimes people will make things sound very interesting, but they're too worried about breaking canon and I think it clashes with our creativity.
Anyway, what do you guys think? As always when this conservation has run its course I'll de-sticky it.

Just a tip: You can creatively create something based on canon, but also describe it in your own rules. So like instead of using the show's language/terminology you should invent your own.
This might help make the RPs more inclusive. Of course- not everybody is gonna want to join every RP, but participation does get to be a problem sometimes. And we don't want to take this too far, or else the RPs really get to be too vanilla and stale. ((don't dumb things down to the lowest common demoniator just don't expect everyone to get all the inside jokes all the time))
Again, this is common sense I know but it's worth repeating, I think.

Well I think its a great idea. I dont get much tv, I dont have a video or dvd player and Im often very busy. I just never get a chance to watch or read much anymore. Ive been put of heaps of Rps becos I just didnt get it.

Yeah I know what you mean. Asking somebody to get as obsessed in the series as you are is a little much. There has to be a way for us to all come together so we can have fun RPing instead of worrying about canon.

P.S. Sam is right about finding people who love a series of something as much as you do. So, instead of making it an RP, why not advertise the thought first? This sames the maker of the RP lots of trouble and time incase it fails, which I hope it doesn't ^^

There... was a Final Fantasy Christmas game eek *Wants* And to clarify I have FF1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,10-2,12,Tactics,Tactics Advance. Also if I get my wish I'll get a Gameboy DS/Or PSP, and buy another FF game ninja

Yes Spam, I agree. When recreating or telling a story, you need to assume that your audience knows NOTHING, because they're all idiots. When describing something in your own words or recreating a story, try to change it in such a way that only the basic plot is the same. Change the characters names, genders, races, whatever so that the original story is soo well hidden, or, if you don't want to do that, like I couldn't be bothered with Year of the rogue dragons, give credit to where it's due.
