So, as a senior, I have to do a senior project. I have to write a 7 page paper and do a presentation on a topic of my choice. So me being as awesome as I am just HAD to do it on RENT! To narrow it down a bit I decided to do it on Jonathan Larson and how his life affected RENT.
So I have my thesis and I've started my outline... I need to order Jonathan's book off of Amazon. Unfortunatly it's the holidays so it will take forever to get here...
So my thesis is: Jonathan Larson's Life and death drastically strengthened the emotional impact of the Broadway musical, RENT.
I'll be nice and spoonfeed you: What do you think of my project so far? Opinions on things I sould put in my paper? Do you want me to keep you updated? Why does Amazon have to be so damn slow?

I think that would be a really cool topic to write a paper on. Good luck, and keep us updated!

I'd like to read it when you finish it, or even read parts as you go through. I'd definitely like to see how it turns out.
By the way you have it all planned out - and the reason for writing it - I really think it'll turn out nicely written, and very professional. Not like some odd fangirl note praising Rent.
The bonus features on the Rent DVD have a sort of, documentary thing on Jonathan, and I think that'd be a great thing for you to watch to get some information on Jonathan's life, and the beginnings of Rent.
Good luck!

Be sure you watch Larson's bio on the RENT DVD. You learn a whole lot about him and how RENT is really his autobiography.

Your paper sounds like it's going to go smoothly. You've got some legitimate points. I hope you watch the Jon Larson documentary on the RENT DVD, like others suggested.

Pride and Prejudice is incredible =)
Your project sounds great. It sounds like good fun, which I find always strengthens the writing of a paper. I actuallly just finished my US history final paper on the social history of American musical theatre. It was 10 pages of what should have been a 100 page paper, so I essentially went from the 1930s to the 1990s, but there was quite a bit about RENT in the end. Mostly abnout how RENT as musical theatre affected the social history of the US. It might have actually been an enjoyable paper to write, had I had more time =
So I guess what I'm saying is, enjoy it, and I look forward to seeing some of the finished product. Best of luck!

I can think of a big impact...he wrote it....
Hehe, all joking aside that sounds really interesting. I'd love to read it as well. I think you should look into Anthony Rapp's book as well. I read it and it had a lot about Jonathon in the beginning. He also told us a story (when he visited my acting class) about how the first run-through after Larson's death was supposed to be just a sit down and sing a long and it turned into the full production by the end. He included a lot about that in his book. I really think that you should check out the impact that he had on Anthony, you know, from an outsiders point of view. It would add to it.

Amazon is slow because they like watching you agonize. I don't know how exactly to tie it in, but you should mention the life support scene and how it's based off of Friends In Deed and that the names of the people in the group are the names of jonathan's friends and others who've died of AIDS. Other than that, good luck with your project! and yes, keep us posted, but make it second priority to actually writing the damn thing. Oh, and if you haven't already, read Anthony Rapp's book. JL's death will make you cry and it has lots of Rent history type stuff in it.
