Another student of the soul...

Thomas looked over the documents he held in his hands, taking a slow sip from the mug of steaming liquid beside him. The notices had been sent out, so the student should be along soon enough. Not that he was in much of a hurry today. The man kept his wounded hand well wrapped up under the white shirt he wore, now and then the small dwarf dragon would scale down the length of his arm to sniff at it. He'd used healing magic but it was still very tender. This place never failed to suprise him.

The magic lab was pretty much empty save for Thomas. There were a few of his little exariments sitting around in their cages. Strange birds, a reptile here and there, and a large tank full of curious fish.

Chath knocked on the door to announce that he was here, poking in his head after doing so. He wasn't wearing a happy expression, this whole day was going to be annoying. He tried to shift his focus, this teacher seemed to read minds. THis day was to help him understand magic better, help him work with it. This day was going to be prodcutive.

He waited a few moments and then headed into the classroom. Jeeze it seemed so more more intimidating now that it was empty of students and dragons. He hadn't brought Keir with him, though he might as well spare the black dragon the torment of just sitting around all class.

"Have a seat, Chath." Thom's voice commanded just as the door opened.

Thomas looked up casually from his desk, the steam of his tea swirling about his face as it lifted up from the cup. He had some notes up on the board in a strange language, some runic markings along with a rough sketch of a salamander.

"I hope you've come prepaired."

Prepared? He brought paper and pencils, his mister more bandages if he needed them. (He tended to produce a toxic substance from his skin when nervous or angry thus the bandages were to help absorb the poisons.) A positive disposition? Heh. He had to choke back a laugh for that thought, and covered it with a cough.

"I certainly hope so sir." He replied honestly.

"Very well." Thomas nodded and lifted his eyes to the boy, establishing that link with him once more. There was that exposed feeling again, that tunnel of the mind with only Chath's eyes at one end, Thom's at the other with that horrible piercing gaze. It would seem like maybe hours before the teacher turned back to the board, it had only been moments but it was one of the more unerving things about the teacher.

"The magic of the soul is one that associates with elements past the basic element of magic. Everyone is more or less associated more strongly with one element over another. In this world, especially, the totem elements- or the ones more strongly associated with the beings here- tend to depend on the matter of creature you have been infused with. " He looked over, eyeing the boy a bit, "You are a salamander, in mythology they are creatures of fire abilities, responsable for homes burning down, hot feet, and other troublesome little pranks. However, you are a natural salamander... an amphibian. Perhaps you would like to take a guess at which element you are attuned most strongly to?"

Chath felt that hallow gaze and inwardly flinched, can't back down, he wanted to prove he could do this, but man was this guy scary. As Thmoas explained the mythological slamander he looked a bit confused. He was a newt. Were they the same species? he decided not to argue and ventured a fairly well thought answer to the question he had been asked.

" I would say water. Being the creature I am, I find myself more comfertable in a water like enviroment." He explained trying to sound more sophisticated than he really was.

Thomas nodded slowly, "Very good." The bit of chalk lifted up and drew up a stylized symbol for water. "Your soul's element is water. You are comfortable in it, you know how it works above the others. You must grow more familar with it, you must embrace the element as a part of yourself if you are to ever master it... like anything."

He held a hand out, "Now... I will teach you your first spell with water. I expect you to practice it whenever you have the strength to do so, and by the time finals come around I will expect you to manage this simple spell without too much energy."

Thomas looked to his hand, those sharp eyes of his narrowed on them. Chath would see something almost ripple over his entire body then flow down to his hand. He might swear that something was dripping from his arm. A faint form began to shape in the palm of the teacher's hand, then there was a slight glow. Soon what looked like a ball of living water sat in Thom's hand, the water dripped down from his fingers only to float back up into the mass.

"What you're seeing is the purest form of the element of water. This here is an element itself. This is what will be the heart of all your powers within summoning this element. From this all spells will flow... as you grow more familar with casting it, the larger and more powerful your spells will become. A full-blown water mage can summon the rains, can call the waves of the ocean -if you're within range- and command the tides of rivers. I don't expect such things from you but perhaps you might splash someone." He smirked a bit.

"Now. I want you to try it. Visualize the water. Clear your mind of everything else, remember how it feels to be submerged in it, to feel it not only on your body but running through it. It will drain you terribly your first few times, but you must work at it if you're to master it..."

Chath tried to grasp what Thomas was saying, it sounded...easy enough. The whole beggining part about him embracing the element also made sense to him...if in a vague way.

He was amazed as the teachers explained how powerful a water mage could be, he had never thought of becoming a mage, since he had focused so much on fighting offensively and defensively. he wondered what kind of spells he could use to help people with?

He nodded his head his eyes widening in interest as he watched Thomas summon the water into the palm of his hand, it was floating....it looked almost alive. Chath took a sharp intake of breath and withheld the urge to whistle his amazment. When instructed to do the same, he tried to visualize as Thomas had instructed.

He held his hand open the palm facing up and stared at it for the longest time, trying to will some spark of water magic to flow through him like it had Thomas.

Nothing happened.

Getting frusterated but not giving up he tried to recal what Thomas had done. Visualize the water, clear his mind of everything, water...being in it, submerged apart of it...one with it.. .

His mind was being too busy. So focused on trying to recal the intrustions the true path of the magic was eluding him. He looked to Thomas breifly and yet couldn't meet the teachers gaze. This was embaressing.

Clenching his fist shut a moment and then opening it again he closed his eyes and tried to empty his thoughts. Water. The sound of it while submerged, the feel of it gliding past his skin...

He was unaware of the magic starting to gather in his body, travel slowly if not sluggishly towards his hand and at the tips of his fingers water bloomed. Swelling like a slowly filled water balloon it then rolled into Chath's palm and grew little by little until it finally stopped.

When Chath opened his eyes he saw the little puddle of water sitting in his hand and in his excitement nearly dropped it. It was no where as impressive as Thomas's water, but he had done it!!! He couldn't believe htat he had actually got water to appear from nowhere!

Thomas watched the boy silently, his arms folded tight over his chest. Attempt after attempt Chat seemed to have a bit of difficulty. His mind was too scattered, too unfocused for the moment. He did make a quiet sound of approval as the water formed in the palm of the boy's hand, "Very good..." He stepped forward, weaving the element around in his hand, "However, you managed to call on just water, not the pure elemental form. It's still decent for a first try."

He held his hand out to display the ball of floating water, still moving around, splashing and re-forming, "The raw forms of elements are almost alive. They carry within them the power of the element that they represent and the ability to manipulate that element around them. As you grow stronger in magic, you won't need to call the raw form, instead it'll flow through you. For now, focus on calling this form. Yours will be smaller- much smaller -perhaps even a single droplet until you hone your own abilities."

He closed his hand around the element, it splashed then seemed to fade back into Thom. "I expect you to practice as often as you can stand to, in your final I expect to see the raw element and a single spell." He stepped back, "Try again. Once you call it I'll show you your first ability."

Chath nodded his head and felt a bit of pride seep into his smile, which soon dropped as he was informed that he had summoned the wrong thing. The raw elemental power? He watched the water in Thomas's hand and then compared it to his own little puddle. Main difference? His puddle didn't move at all, it was just as it appeared to be. Water.

Practice? He would be sure to add it to his schedule of things to do. Defense, attack and now magic. Jeeze when was he going to have time to do anything else?

Taking a deep breath he tried to do as instructed, since closing his eyes seemed to best way to clear his excited mind, he tried to level his breathing and recal how he felt the first time when he managed to summon the water.

Not wanting to just empty his currently puddle filled palm he raised his other hand his left this time and tried to focus. Water. Every being lived off it, one could not survive without it. Pure, raw energy, always in constant motion, even when still. This...was difficult, he could find a faint...very faint signal. Almost like a shadow calling out to him but only to suddenly alude his sight. An image caught in the corner of the eye only to be gone when he blinked.

He opened his eyes, the water in his right hand lay there, and his left still lay empty. Taking another breath, he hadn't realized he had been holding his breath at the time he then tried to clear his thoughts again.
The sound the feel . . .

Chath felt something like a small giggle move through his mind and then finally seep into his body, where it then traveled to his outstretched hand. Not wanting to lose hi concentration he stared soley at his palm only to see the tiniest of droplets seep from his skin and then bob a couple milimeters in the air. It was tiny, so small. If he hadn't been starin at his palm he doubted he would of noticed it's arrival at all.

"Is...that it?" He asked unsure, the tiny water drop bobbing up and down seemed pathetic compared to Thomas's.

"That it is." He nodded slowly, stepping closer to inspect the small ball of elemental energy. "They will always start out small, if your body can't handle the stress of summoning it, it'll compromise. You can always push yourself more and more every time you manage a spell, you grow stronger. It's like building an immunity and pushing yourself too hard can be just as potiant as a bottlefull of poisen if you're not careful."

He stepped back and held out his hand with the element, "Now- for your first spell you'll learn to shoot water. At first it's going to be quite a weak spell...though you might appreciate it during water fights." He smirked a bit. "However- if finely tuned enough you can learn to send enough pressure through a stream of water powerful enough to cut through stone."

He turned to demonstrate, motioning to a brick. It pulled itself up from the ground and rested on a stool. "Observe." He closed his eyes, taking slow, concentrated breaths. The element in his hand began to bubble and glow. Quite suddenly Thom's eyes shot open and his hair flared out, the elemental shot a stream of water out, slamming into the brick and drilling it back into the wall. Soon the water stream had made a perfect hole in the center of it. Thom pulled his hand back, allowing the brick to fall to the ground and the spell to end.

"I don't expect you'll be able to do such a thing for a time- but I want you to shoot water from that."

Yikes. Chath watched in blantant amazement. He didn't realize water could be that powerful. "wow.." he muttered under his breath and then looked at his little water element floating in his hand.

"Is there enough here to shoot?" he asked looking at the tiny thing. "Or should i practice more before trying to shoot?" He asked wondering just how he managed to do that particular spell.

"And how did you make the water do that? Did you yous your strength of mind or something?"

"No, this is purely the magic of the soul. Combining techniques is for later studies if you choose to persue your education in my class." He wiped at his forehead a bit. Obviously the spell had taken some energy out of him, "You command the water, concentrate it into a stream and send your own energy outwards towards a target. With practice the spell will become stronger, more precise, and more potiant. I do not expect you to master this spell just yet- but you will have to manage it by the final exam."

He eyed Chatch sharply, "I expect full effort on your part, do you understand?"
PostPosted: Wed Jan 17, 2007 9:59 pm

Er. Chath nodded his head, a new respect for this scary individual. He was very knowledgeable despite teh fat he could read minds. "ok. So to pass I need to be able to summon the element as well perform a simple water spell." he repeated looking down at his waterdroplet. It was really kinda amuzing thinking of sending it out to what? drip on someone?

"I will practice with as much dedication as I do my other studies." He repied truthfully. For he had been practicing his defense with keir nearly religiously. And Had enrolled himself in a weaopnry class. "How much time do i have before the exam?" he asked dreading the answer.

"A month at most." Thomas answered simply as he took himself a seat at his desk once more, slowly reaching up to brush the hair away from his eyes. Chath would feel the telepathic thread severed from his mind and once more his thoughts were his own to have. "So you had best put some effort into it."
