.+.The Canon.+.

The Canon is a modern fantasy RP. I know we've been having some difficulty getting an RP to fly in here, so let's try something new. Try posting as often as possible, even if your post involves no interaction with other people's characters or your own character! At the very least, it will give us insight into your character(s). Post, even if you think it sucks and you have no idea how to make it better. Take the NaNoWriMo approach and write even when you think you can't. You can't wait for inspiration when it passes you by. You have to catch up to it by running as fast as you can.

.-Setting and History-.

In all the known universe, the only place where life can live is Earth. This is something human beings have thought of and challenged, searching for intelligent life in the heavens. When finally they came in contact with a new species of sentients, the an age began that would be named the golden age of humanity by some, but the dark age by others.

Of course, human beings have the capacity to disagree, but I'll explain. In the year AD1970, Earth was an infinitely small speck on an infinitely small speck on an infinitely small grain on a large expansive beach. Human beings were isolated from other civilizations that inhabited the stars beyond its solar system, and in the name of good, many atrocities were carried out. War plagued Earth, and human beings focused their efforts on creating weapons instead of peace. Eventually, the creation and detonation of the nuclear bomb was detected by someone, somewhere far away.

Thus came the Bydo to Earth, or so they claimed. Seeing human beings fight amongst one another in chaos, they swept down upon them, instilling fear of destruction for opposition. Their rule was expected to be cruel and marked by slavery and the destruction of human society. These expectations could not be more off the mark. It is true, they claimed absolute authority over the planet Earth, but at the same time, they ruled with a light touch. The Bydo liberated oppressed peoples around the globe, and with the establishment of trade infrastructure, boosted the world economy to levels heretofor unseen. The gap between rich and poor still exists, but abject poverty has, for the most part, disappeared completely. The Bydo placed themselves in charge of interpreting and creating law, but left the ability to carry out the law in the hands of humans. The Bydo have shared technology with the humans ranging from the successful and efficient production and containment of nuclear fusion to biomodification. These are the only significant advances in human technology, however, and the Bydo keep close watch over the control of these. Fusion is monitored very closely, lest the humans use it for war and violence (especially insurgency against the Bydo) and biomodification nanotechnology, while freely and frequently used by the Bydo themselves, is only distributed amongst certain "approved" humans and in the disabled with the aim of correcting their disability. Most see these changes as miraculous occurances that saved the human race from certain annihilation.

The Bydo know better, however. While some in the lower ranks do not recognize the agenda behind the occupation of Earth, those in the upper leadership have actually come to Earth in order to carry out the divine commandments as stated in Bydo legend. Earth is listed as the 108th and final resting place of the fabled "Stone-Like." None know where Earth's Stone-Like is located, nor what it even looks like. Several of the previous 107 Stone-Like have even been living creatures. However, what is known is that the final Stone-Like is located on Earth, and that the acquisition of it and combination with the other 107 will reveal the path to the Canon, a prophecy of the Bydo that will lead the Empire to infinite prosperity.

Something else happened, however. Since the establishment of the Bydo Empire's benevolent dictatorship over Earth, some human beings have begun exhibiting supernatural, paranormal, or otherwise unexplainable abilities. It is, for lack of a better word, magic. These events did not go unnoticed by the Bydo, and in order to keep humanity from learning of this potential, they have taken in as many "special" humans as possible, employing them in an organization they have thusly dubbed "The Technocracy."

The Technocracy is a world-wide conspiracy that employs a technological paradigm to pursue an agenda promoting safety over freedom; however, it claims amongst the lower echelons of its membership to pursue an agenda opposed to superstition and faith-based belief systems. Furthermore, it claims to champion science while rejecting any innovation not approved by its own leadership. In essence, it attempts to mask the magical abilities of its members by explaining them scientifically and technologically. Some of its members are actually completely unaware of their abilities, and truly believe that their powers are a result of the tools used to explain them. The Technocracy has supplanted police forces around the world, performing the duties of general civil peacekeeping and the suppression of supernatural.

In direct opposition to the Technocracy and the Bydo, however, some humans with these powers have moved underground, forming a resistance. They believe that magic is simply the ability of humans to alter reality on a scale previously untouched, and that though some might discover this ability accidentally, all humans possess the potential. The resistance juggles the twin duties of attempting to "convert" or otherwise "awaken" humans without these abilities (whom they call "sleepers") and attempting to undermine the Technocracy and Bydo authority, with the intent eventually to depose them entirely. Unfortunately, the sleepers cannot be awakened abruptly by simply showing them magic. Inevitably, doing this only backfires, resulting in a skeptic or in extreme cases, someone who overtly denies that what they have seen actually happened or the complete loss of the memory. "Converting" sleepers is done in different ways depending on the individual, but in every case it is subtle to avoid skepticism.

At the same time, many of the "awakened" individuals in the Technocracy see no reason to continue functioning under the rule of the Bydo. Constiting mostly of the upper ranks, these feel that their organization is most suitable to govern humans. These feelings are kept secret for the most part, however.

Despite all this conflict, though, these events are conducted in secret. The public is largely unaware that the resistance even exists, and given their lack of information, combined with Bydo propaganda, they would not understand why a resistance would exist in the first place.

The Bydo Empire, Technocracy, and the Resistance conduct a kind of invisible war, each with its own goals, each trying to steer history in the direction they think is best, all of this completely unnoticed by the majority.

Bydo
The Bydo defy the laws of human science. No one argues that they are not alive, but they are a contradiction to the rules used by humanity to define life. The Bydo have physical mass, yet exhibit the properties of an energy wave. The Bydo themselves are shapeshifters. However, changing shape significantly takes as much as 20 earth years. It is possible for one to shift for a short period of time, but any form a Bydo wishes to keep for longer than a few minutes has to be worked into slowly. Shifting quickly is painful for most. A Bydo's lifespan is approximately 200 years, with a single Bydo reaching adulthood at age 40

For the most part, the Bydo have attempted to imitate human form for the purposes of facilitating communication, but the distinction between Bydo and Human is obvious. Bydo tend to appear unnaturally taller, averaging as much as a foot above the height of humans, and are typically thinner. The Bydo universally have white hair, and multiple, various, iridescent eye colors not normally found in humans, although there are some with blue or green eyes as well. Their skin is also colored unusually. Because of the properties of Bydo flesh being in constant flux between matter and energy, they appear to glow with an inner light, the color of which varies between each individual.

The Bydo have the ability to speak telepathically and privately with any other Bydo in sight. Possibly because of the ability to link minds as such, Bydo civilization is much more community oriented than human civilization. In general, it can be viewed as a heirarchical society, with a few leaders consulting a larger religiously-based and the remaining populace to decide on the actions of the community, but notions of personal property are a foreign concept, introduced only upon meeting humans. Some Bydo enjoy the intricacies of human society more than their own, but few have openly rejected Bydo social structure. Bydo society is very religious-centric

Humans
Humans are as they always have been throughout recorded history. Human society is not that different from ours, either. In fact, the only difference is the Bydo have united the world community by threat of force. International politics is either unheard of, or merely a puppet scheme set up by the Empire to disguise their absolute control of Earth.

Aside from that, however, humanity enjoy extensive civil and economic freedoms. Since the establishment of Bydo rule over Earth, the economy has flourished, nearly wiping out poverty. Major metropolitan centers are, for the most part, where they are now. Terrorism and war are completely unknown, and the Bydo have managed to quell any dangerous fanaticism entirely by the use of diplomacy (although the use of weapons thousands of times more powerful than nuclear bombs as a deterrent has certainly aided them in this regard.) On the surface, humans enjoy what would appear to most to be a golden age. This is, of course, a front. The Bydo have no desire to establish order and peace on Earth, but have merely done so because a chaotic planet makes it that much more difficult to accomplish their objectives.

Some human beings have begun exhibiting supernatural powers, following contact with the Bydo. Why this contact has served as a catalyst or whether it has been simply a coincidence is unknown, but the Empire has reacted to this with mixed feelings of alarm and intrigue. Under the command of the Bydo council, the Technocracy has been established, composed of humans who serve as a peacekeeping force, displacing human society's police and fire departments.

The Empire has not been able to find all of the supernatural humans, however. Some have formed and underground resistance, opposing the Technocracy and its puppetmasters. This hodgepodge resistance is largely disorganized, but maintains tenuous ties across the world.

=Magic and Technology=

Bydo Technology
Bydo Technology functions by drawing off the energy supply of the user. For the most part, this is not very draining, but large machines can exhaust a user if multiple people are not cooperating. Small weapons and machines, for the most part, can safely be used frequently and liberally, with no concern for individual well-being.

The Bydo also have the ability to interface with human technology. Because human technologies are comparatively extremely basic, though, and have much less stress tolerance than Bydo technology, they are inevitably and irreparably damaged by this process. The degree to which a Bydo can interface or power a machine varies on an individual basis. For the most part, a Bydo who is proficient at altering physical structure to shapeshift will not be as skilled at altering energy structure to interface and power machines, but there are exceptions.

Bydo Technology is thousands of years ahead of humans'. They have developed Faster Than Light travel through space, enormous starships that obscure the skies, clean and safe nuclear fusion, energy weapons, teleportation, artificial intelligence, and biomodification. Of these, only nuclear fusion and biomodification have been shared with humanity, and the use and application of them are closely monitored. Biomodification for the purposes of enhancing performance in any field (aside from overcoming disabilities) is only available to the bydo and to approved members of the technocracy.

Human Magic: The Technocracy
The Technocracy is entirely composed of humans who have supernatural powers. Human magic, however, requires a focus. For the Technocracy, this focus appears to rationalize magic, making it appear indistinguishable from advanced technology given to them by their Bydo leaders. It is universally a material object. Technocrats typically have multiple foci to disguise their abilities. A focus is useless to anyone but its owner. Foci range from subtle ("X-ray" glasses) to obvious (Laser bazooka.) A Technocrat's magic abilities are discovered. Research into magic is fruitless, as such abilities arise spontaneously, albiet typically in times of dire need. All humans who are granted biomodification for any purpose other than overcoming a disability or debilitating disease are members of the Technocracy.

Human Magic: The Resistance
The Resistance is also made of supernatural humans. Members of the resistance still require a focus, but it is not as obviously related to the magic as is the case with the Technocracy. The focus can be something material, such as a pendant or ring, or something immaterial, such as pleasure, pain, the color blue, or music. Rarely will a focus be something large (although it is not impossible) but most foci will tend to be something portable and inconspicuous, possibly even being an everyday object that serves its own mundane function. Resistance members with supernatural powers will usually only have one focus.

Magic bends reality, though. The Technocrats manage to get away with it because their foci rationalize the magic, making it appear normal, but Resistance magic blatantly interferes with natural law and pushes reality. Reality does push back, however. It can be compared to a branch in the middle of a path. You can bend it to get it out of the way, but if you overdo it, it'll snap back and hit you in the face. Similarly, "vulgar" use of magic by resistance members with no justification whatsoever typically results in backlash. Depending on the severity of the violation, the injury can range from a bloody nose to abject insanity.

Some resistance members exhibit atypical physical characteristics, as well, as a result of magic use. This ranges from an unusual eye color to an entire body covered by cold, hard scales. In general, these characteristics are purely cosmetic, but most obvious or non-concealable ones may interfere with an individual's attempts to blend into society.

))Character Listing((

PM this form to me:
Character Name: (Bydo names are as per classic fantasy fiction. Cultural assimilation has led to some humans with bydo names and some bydo with human names. For timeline reasons, a Bydo with a human name or vice versa must be under the age of 36)

I encourage you to create multiple characters. We're not a very heavily populated guild, so we'll need them. Try not to go overboard if you don't think you can handle more than two though, and of course, you can have just one character if that's all you want.

Lykus
Character Name: Caracalla Draconis
Character Role/Affiliation: Emperor-Consul for the Bydo Empire
Age and Sex: 130/Male
Physical Description: Draconis stands nearly nine feet tall, towering over even the current forms of most bydo. His skin has a very pale blue sheen, similar to that of water, but more noticeable is the inner red light with which he glows. His eyes are a violent orange, and he is bald. Draconis' face is wrinkled, yet commanding. Unlike most Bydo in positions of authority, who emulate human appearances of beauty for propaganda purposes, Draconis adopted a scowl-prone, stern appearance.
Bio: Draconis has always been an extremely dictatorial leader. He believes that the end justifies the means, and that the most expedient path to the prosperity of the Bydo is the one that should be taken, without question, and without regard to any other consequences. Because of this, he finds the occupation of Earth and the freedoms granted to the human race to be beyond unsatisfactory. Draconis was the strongest proponent behind the enslavement of the human race, but when faced with the argument that the Stone-Like might be one of the humans, and that enslaving humanity could therefore damage it, he was forced to concede. Draconis has since grown largely impatient with the occupation of Earth, as the search for previous Stone-Like has never taken so long.
Special Abilities: Draconis' abilities focus primarily around communication and diplomacy. He possesses biomodification that amplifies his telepathic abilities and simultaneously connects his mind to each of his personal guards. He can communicate with other bydo without seeing them, although their lack of similar biomodification makes this one-way.

He is very unskilled at shapeshifting (as evidenced by his especially differing appearance compared to other bydo's attempts at mimicking human form) but he is extremely proficient at powering and interfacing with technology. This ability is so potent, that even some bydo technology has been damaged by his touch. Further amplifying his ability to interface with machines, he is capable of acquiring and analyzing information from both human and bydo databases nearly instantaneously, as opposed to being forced to "download" the information into another machine for decryption and sorting.

Lykus
Character Name: Shinzui Ren
Character Role/Affiliation: Strategist of the Technocracy
Age and Sex: 42/Male
Physical Description: Ren is of average build and average height (which is slightly tall for asians.) He has perpetually short-cropped, jet-black hair, and dark brown eyes that may as well be black, as far as anyone is concerned. He has smooth, pale skin that shows no signs of aging. Ren is always seen wearing a business suit, regardless of where he is, and it never without his foci. It is painfully obvious to anyone who wishes to make the connection that he is a member of the Technocracy
Bio: Ren was born into a Chinese family of farmers. When he was 12, 6 years after the invasion of the Bydo Empire, an accident involving a tractor severed his left arm. By the time he arrived at the hospital, it was too late. However, the bydo offered to provide him with a biomechanical replacement, and to provide a superior education to that given him by his rural community. Elated by the opportunity, he and his family graciously accepted.
He has yet to see his family since leaving them, that day, nor could he care any less. The "education" was combined with an indoctrination into the technocracy, where he formed a philosophy that posited the rejection of all nonsense, especially that of "magic." Contrary to this, however, he is completely aware that his abilities are supernatural. Ren has turned down promotions to Panopticon several times before, as he believes the position of panopticon is merely symbolic, and that the hands-on approach of strategy offers him more control over the situation. Ren also believes that he and the elite of the Technocracy are best suited to control history, a belief that has also contributed to his desire not to be promoted, as a panopticon is too directly connected to Bydo leadership, and his subversive agenda would be more easily unveiled before its time if he were in such a position.
Special Abilities: Ren's arm, aside from replacing his original arm, has gone through several upgrades. At current, it conceals a compact chain gun, and can deliver an electric shock ranging from mildly painful to lethal. Both of these abilities are performed by machines in his arm, but the bullets and electricity necessary actually to perform these actions are created by magic that uses his arm as a focus. Though he has vision corrected by biomod enhancement, he wears glasses. These are actually a focus, as well, that allow him to see the probabilities of certain events playing out, which is information that proves invaluable to his job as a strategist.

ValenarrDeMirro
Character Name: Charles Thane
Character Role/Affiliation: Operative for the Technocracy
Age and Sex: 32, Male
Physical Description: Charles is tall for the average human, standing at about six feet and three inches. He is of a medium build, to say that he is bulky would probably make him chuckle, as well as saying that he is thin. His body is somewhat muscular, composed of lean muscle, which he needs for his job. Charles has blond hair, which he keeps cut short and in a sort of military fashion, and a pair of almost unnaturally blue eyes. He typically wears black, being an operative and all, but wears nothing that would really set him aside from an average person. He typically wears a black leather jacket with a plain, black button-up shirt underneath, along with a pair of black pants and black leather boots.
Bio: Charles' history is a convoluted one, and one that he only partially remembers. Charles was born in one of the smaller towns, but soon moved into one of the central hubs primarily under Bydo rule. This is where things get complicated. You see, the Technocracy sensed opportunity in the small child, whose name might not have been Charles Thane, even. The Technocracy sent in an Operative, killing Charles' parents, and took the child before the Bydo, who deemed him worthy for biomodification, shortly after giving him a memory wipe, of course, as well as a 'creative' history. Charles believes now that he was a special project, a human, raised in a lab, born from a test tube, to be the perfect Operative. He's fine with this, really, since he knows nothing else and has been literally 'born and bred' for this kind of work. He's paid well by the Technocracy, and he actually gets quite the thrill from being an Operative. He doesn't actually know any other Operatives from the Technocracy, keeping them separated and unaware of each other makes it impossible for anyone interrogating an Operative to ascertain the likeness or description of any other Operative.
Special Abilities: There are many that Charles is in possession of. A few are magic, others are actually abilities gained from biomodification. Also note that Charles has no idea that he's using magic, due to the foci used by the Technocracy.
Universal Bypass Device (UBD): The Universal Bypass Device is actually a focus for Charles' magic. It looks like a small keypad with a module on the top that looks like an infrared emission point (kind of like a small remote), that, when in proximity to security cameras and automated turrets, can bypass them by remote. It can also undo technological locks, such as doors with Keypads. In the case of locked, normal doors, it can also undo those, by emitting instead a series of magnetic pulses into the lock that cause the lock to spring open.
Hacker Glasses: One of Charles' favorites, this pair of ordinary sunglasses is actually another focus for his magic. He almost always wears them as they need to be 'activated' by thought. Once activated, Charles can mentally hack anything technological from remote. He has to be withing close proximity however, and this doesn't work on security bots, turrets, or cameras (hence the need for the UBD). This does, however, work on security terminals, personal computers, and almost anything else to that extent, possibly even ATMs or other mundane things.
Cloaking: This is actually a biomodification that was given to him by the Bydo. A subdermal layer of nanites projects a field around him which bends light ever so slightly, allowing him to become invisible, as well as anything he's carrying (the field around the hands is slightly larger, and can conceal anything of size ranging from a coin to a small rifle). This ability is not unlimited however, and he can run out of 'charge,' at which point he would have to drop out of cloaked mode. Note however that he can attack while cloaked and remain cloaked.
Other: Other than the two foci and the biomodification, Charles is quite capable. He can run near-silently, and is good with almost any weapon, ranging from a knife to a sniper rifle. He prefers to take targets down from a distance, and while he often has to take targets alive for interrogation, that doesn't bother him. Charles is sneaky, knows his stuff, and is quite dangerous to anyone he's put against. Also note that Charles has a permanent link installed in his mind that allows the heads of the Technocracy to keep in touch with him at all times. This link works both ways, and in order to send 'thoughts' back, all Charles must do is will it to do so.

quod erat demonstrandum
Character Name: Alice Sutter
Character Role/Affiliation: Panopticon in the Technocracy
Age and Sex: 32 - Female
Physical Description: Alice is thin and frail. Regardless of circumstances, she always looks very unhealthy to the point where those who don't know her think that she might fall apart at a moment's notice. She has very thin, white hair, unnaturally white skin, and clear irises that appear red, from the blood in her retinas, all as a result of being born albino. She is also rather short, standing at barely under five and a half feet. Typically, she can be seen wearing a lab coat over otherwise ordinary clothing, although it is notable that symbols of the Bydo are often emblazoned on her clothes.
Bio: Alice is, and has always been, devoted to the Bydo. As a child, she was unable to go outside, falling deathly ill if she stayed in the sun for long. However, the bydo biomodification nanotechnology changed this, altering her skin structure so that, while she still appeared disfigured and pale, she could safely feel the warmth and see the light of day. She truly and wholly feels that cooperation with the Bydo is the one true path toward prosperity for both the bydo and humanity.
Alice was one of the upper ranking members of the technocracy who wanted to fool people into joining by convincing them of rejecting faith in exchange for reason. She is also responsible for the internal policies that keep many lower ranking technocrats blissfully unaware that they, and not their foci, are the source of their abilities.
Special Abilities:Alice has no special biomodification beyond that which preserves her health in sunlight. She does, however, have three abilities closely linked to two foci.
She carries with her, at all times, a small notepad. The notepad provides an endless supply of paper. When she has questions, she can begin writing on the paper and the answer will come to her, not as a result of inspiration sparked by writing, but as the words she has written on the paper. It appears to others that she has simply written and organized her thoughts.
Alice also carries around a small neckbrace that, when worn, interfaces with her brain stem and functions as a means of stabilizing and amplifying mental activities, but also serves as a focus for detecting and reading surface thoughts.
Lastly, and much more simply, alice carries a handgun which looks, functions, and for all intents and purposes, is an ordinary handgun, except that it never requires reloading. She is proficient in its use.

ValenarrDeMirro
Character Name: Jurgen Diederich
Character Role/Affiliation: Squad Leader for the Technocracy
Age and Sex: Male, 37
Physical Description: Jurgen's age has yet to truly catch up to him. Upon first glance, it seems as if he were in his mid to early twenties, due to a youthful, clean-shaven gleam that comes from his face. He is almost always wearing a smirk, his green eyes always sharp and keen. His hair is brown, kept trimmed short but not in a standard military style. He typically wears unassuming clothes, generally favoring button-up shirts, jackets, and slacks, usually of a midnight blue colour. He also wears military-grade leather boots, as per his profession, and also typically wears a pair of sunglasses, though not usually on night missions.
Bio: Jurgen's history might not have been so long had the Bydo not intervened. During the course of his life, he was rendered brain-dead by a car wreck. Had it not been for Bydo biomodification, which not only repaired but enhanced his brain (among other things), Jurgen would've died before his twenty-fifth year of life. Because of this, he became a member of the Technocracy, swearing to uphold the Bydo, those he sees as saviors and near-godlike figures. He has been further biomodified by the Bydo, having deemed him worthy of such, and he has been serving the Technocracy for some time, but became a Squad Leader almost immediately when assigned his first mission, due to the death of the former Squad Leader and his almost natural takeover of the position. Jurgen has demonstrated numerous times that he is a brilliant strategist, and has only kept the position of Squad Leader because he likes to be on the field. Also note that in addition to Squad Leader, Jurgen also has the job of being the Technocracy's Quartermaster (one of few) and distributes weapons and ammunition to Operatives who have no 'personal' arms. Note that he also frequently works with Charles Thane, and has a mental link with him.
Special Abilities: Jurgen has few magical foci upon his person, but does have a few biomodifications.
Telescopic Vision: This makes any scope upon Jurgen's weapon superfluous. Merely by thought and will, Jurgen can zoom in on a point due to a biomodification placed within his eyes, and also can mentally assess and gather information about anything within his sight (for example, he can assess thickness of armor, strength of weapons, etc.).
Transparency: Similar to Thane's Cloaking ability, though Transparency is useless against living eyes (unless they're wearing thermal goggles). This 'Transparency' is activated by thought and completely nullifies Jurgen's heat signature, as well as allowing certain waves used for detection (radar waves, for example) to pass through him, rather than bounce back, thus making him effectively invisible to patrol bots, which typically acquire targets through heat signatures. This also nullifies any kind of heat signature made by his weapons, though of course exceptions would be, say, a flamethrower, though Jurgen wouldn't be stupid enough to use one during Transparency mode, if at all. Like Cloak, Transparency can also run out of 'charge,' but Jurgen can still attack and not drop out of Transparency.
Cutter Gloves: The only focus Jurgen carries, and he has no idea he's using magic. These are two ordinary gloves with small 'power packs' (actually just placed there to look pretty and glow somewhat with red lights) upon the backs, these gloves, when activated, can cut (through the 'miracles of fusion') through metal, all the while the wearer is immune to the heat produced by such energy. It can cut through near any kind of metal, with few being able to resist. The only thing that can stop these gloves typically is the thickness of the metal, reducing the purpose of these gloves to cutting grates and the occasional door. Note these gloves are activated by thought, and therefore pose no danger to anything he may hold. He usually takes them off anyways.

Fenrys Kijin
Character Name: Scyrix Mordaen
Character Role/Affiliation: Resistance spy/assassin
Age and Sex: Male (26 years)
Physical Description: Scyrix stands five foot seven inches tall, his greasy, dull black hair is scraggly, and hangs limply over his chalk-white face. His right eye is a particularly fierce shade of amber, while his left is scarred and dull. While his face is beautifully structured, the left side of it is littered with intricate black tattoos, which render his visage at once demonic and otherworldly. The brand of magic he uses has caused mild body alterations, which--aside from the five thin black, whiplike tentacles protruding from his shoulder blades--are hardly noticeable. His arms and legs are a bit longer than normal, for example. The aforementioned "whips" allow Scyrix to climb on walls and ceilings. The tips of them are serrated and needle-sharp. Scyrix wears graying denim jeans tucked into knee-length belt-buckled military boots. Underneath a black leather trench-coat, he wears a wrinkled tanktop. Gold dogtags hang about his neck. His hands are gloved.
Bio: Originally, Scyrix was a member of the Technocracy. It was said that he sided with the resistance after discovering that his abilities were not due to the technology the Bydo had bestowed upon him. Up until he turned eighteen, he had served them faithfully. At this age, however, Scyrix began to question why the Bydo had come to Earth. He left the Technocracy shortly thereafter.
Upon being found by the Resistance, he met his now closest friend, Kari Felder. Scyrix's magical abilities are somewhat weak in comparison with other humans' and so Scyrix, attempting to push the bounds, tried to focus his magic to become more powerful. This led to his consummate insanity, and the loss of sight in his left eye. Since becoming insane however, he has gained a measure of telepathic ability. He does not speak, except mentally with Kari, whom he follows around like a lost shadow.
Special Abilities: Scyrix is a perfectly designed assassin. Along with the ability to control the deadly bladed whips extending from his back, Scyrix also has the ability to bend the light waves around him to camouflage himself (though he must stay perfectly still in order to do this). He has been trained to move in nearly perfect silence, as well as in several styles of martial arts. He trains daily, and uses unorthodox techniques to take down his targets.

Fenrys Kijin
Character Name: Kari Felder
Character Role/Affiliation: Resistance Operative
Age and Sex: Female (31 years)
Physical Description: Kari is somewhat short, only around five foot three inches in height. Her eyes are a bright brown, her skin a dusty tan. Her short, highlighted red hair is tousled and wavy. She can be seen wearing a myriad of outfits. Her favorite clothes include army camo pants with brightly colored turtleneck sweaters. She wears a lot of random jewelry, including a necklace of paper clips. However, always hidden on her person, she has a silver charm bracelet, which serves as the focus for her magic. Kari tries to keep an optimistic outlook on life, especially since meeting Scyrix. She does have a bit of a temper, however.
Bio: Kari grew up during the Bydo invasion, and had seen and heard of many of their atrocities. She watched as the aliens tried to capture her older brother. He put up a fight, discovering his own magical ability in the process: the ability to channel the air around himself into various weapons. The Bydo were forced to kill him. Horrorstruck, Kari ran through the city, calling for help, and was heartbroken when no one listened. The only thing she had left of her previous home was a small charm bracelet her brother had given her on her birthday. She was taken in by an orphanage soon afterward.
At the age of twenty, Kari discovered the focus for her power. While walking home one night from her day job, a thief leaped out of a dark alleyway in an attempt to mug her. Already in a foul mood, Kari turned to face him. As he leaped for her purse, Kari remembered her brother's ability. She focused on the silver bracelet he had given her long ago. Grasping it in her hand, she swung upward, and the air around her became a solid hammer, knocking the thief unconscious.
The Resistance caught up with her eventually, and it was here that she first met Scyrix Mordaen.
Special Abilities: Kari, since learning of her magical ability, has trained with it for many years. With the air about her, she has been able to shape a myriad of lethal weapons, including knuckle blades and swords. She is trained in various sword techniques. However, when close combat fails to help her, she resorts to using the pistol she carries around on her person at all times.

Lykus
Character Name: Radus Crossbone
Character Role/Affiliation: Agent of the Resistance
Age and Sex: 23/Male
Physical Description: Radus is slightly under six feet tall, but has an extremely robust build. It appears plainly obvious that he works out frequently and eats well, paying close attention to his personal appearance. His skin is a light tan color, and his eyes are different colors, one being a radiant green, the other being an unusual hazel of the same green color that turns brown closer to the pupil. Most notable of his appearance, though, is the fact that his hair is a brilliant hot pink color. Attempts to dye his hair to something more passably human-looking have uniformly resulted in the dye merely slipping off the hair. Elsewhere on his body, his hair is brown.
Radus is always seen wearing a brown leather dog collar, for whatever reason.
Bio: Radus' original last name was Zimmerman. He was born into a family of fierce Bydo loyalists, who had pledged allegiance to the Bydo for "saving them from poverty." Radus, however, was far more perceptive than the rest of his family and long suspected the presence of the bydo to be the result of ulterior motives.
At the age of 16, Radus was thrown out of his family's house after a heated argument. While he was certain they would take him back, he chose not to return, living in bydo-funded housing until he awakened to his abilities and joined the resistance.
Radus' focuses his efforts mainly on attempting to awaken sleepers. He believes that, if enough are awakened and join the cause of the resistance, victory will be achieved without the need for strategy and sabotage.
Special Abilities: Radus has only one magical ability. He has vast control over the functions of his body, particularly that of healing ability, though he is not limited to this. Wounds that would normally be permanently damaging or scarring heal within minutes. He can even control the bodily functions of people he comes in touch with for an extended period of time, as long as he continues to touch them. The focus for this amazing power, however, is live music or music in MP3 format representing at least one electic guitar, and playing in excess of 60 beats per minute.
Radus also has extensive training in Jeet Kune Do and Combatives from the gym where he holds a day job, although he prefers not to use these when possible.

Jarlaxle Baenre
Character Name: Nellesethai Aum
Character Role/Affiliation: Resistance Affiliate
Age and Sex: 12 / Female
Physical Description: A spirit, the purest form of energy, just like the true form of the Bydo. How else could anyone see her? One of the extremely rare cases where a subject’s entire bodily structure and outward appearance weren’t just slightly altered but completely changed. Nel has many forms due to lack of any true shape, but when she is “nude” no matter what appearance is the current, it is but a shape, featureless. This energy that once was a girl is seen as a sphere, as bright as the sun or as dim as a dying star, swirling, scintillating. Despite appearance or shape of a being, one does still feel quite naked and uncomfortable without its’ skin, this one especially, as a young lady used to the civilized world shouldn’t prance around with nothing on. More often than not, the core, which is the live being itself, hides in a self made shell, consisting of whatever materials are around. The shell itself is usually altered through a few abilities, to look just right. Nel is still a child, despite her current state, and a child’s imagination is a wonderful thing. If anything good came out of the cruel experiments of the Bydo, it was that the lass could be anything she desired. The hardest part of maintaining a perfect shell is the need to show emotion… which the girl can do, with some difficulty.
Bio: A child of an old and high ranking family in England that became business with the Bydo when they first set foot on Earth. Having large amounts of money, and being blind to the truth that so little knew, the family willingly donated a huge sum to the Bydo for developing technology, as a sign or friendship and to “help the world”. The current couple, the owners of the whole empire however were growing rather old and found themselves incapable of producing an heir. Because of this, the couple was forced to ask the Bydo for their assistance with this rather embarrassing matter. The Bydo who have long been close business partners of the family accepted. Within a year’s time, a girl had joined the great family… but this wasn’t as joyous an event as many would think. A female. That was the problem. She would get married and the empire would fall into the hands of some lesser family as it was the custom for males to claim ownership… not to mention a rather hefty dowry was to be expected. Kissing up to their associates, the family decided to ask the Bydo to “remake her in their image” so that this little one could serve as a “sign of peace and unification” between the two races. Like everyone else, the entire family did know what the true form of the Bydo was, what they saw before their eyes was true to them. The Bydo researchers took the request seriously and altered the girl into their image. After this lengthy two year process, the child was returned to the family… who at that time was pampering and bringing up a new heir… a male, who would further conquer and bring more power to the already impressive industry. The lass was beautiful, with flowing white hair, light cyan skin and shining eyes of gold. Even with such exotic features, the girl was a reject, although she was responsible for the trend of humans adopting Bydo names. Within the month, Nellesethai’s features began to crack… her skin, like a broken down wall, her hair just like a fire’s tongues. Appalled and disgusted by this, here family could do nothing as this was after all the symbol of peace and unification between the humans and the Bydo. Any harm to this child could have dishonored the great race and stirred up a plethora of problems. No physical harm ever came to the child who now only appeared as a bright shining sphere that stood on a pedestal within a pink room, covered with toys and silence. Though the humans considered the sphere unaware of it’s surrounding, all of the harsh words uttered, pierced the child’s spirit. Nel was simply not developed enough to do anything at this point. Five years and one day old, the symbol had vanished. The Bydo and the entire nation were concerned. The family, feigned sorrow and crisis. The next few months brought stories of unexplained killing, mass fires and stories of ghosts from children and the superstitious folk and then, without any warning, all of them ceased. Around four years spend in solitude… the powers and the mental state of the child have developed. Through her powers the lass had managed to assume a form of herself, of what she would have looked like if the Bydo had never tampered with her body. The pigmentation and the shaping is perfect the facial expressions exist… almost like a real human but as the shell itself is of metal the body is significantly heavier and harder. To this day, Nel harbors feelings of hate for her family, not so much the Bydo as they only did what was asked of them. She never did join the resistance officially, but many people from the faction do know her. Very few had seen her without the shell… but rumors of a renegade Bydo sprang from those that did. They were never confirmed by either race.
Special Abilities: Although she was forged into their image, Nel’s abilities are very different from that of the Bydo. If anything, she resembles a planet more than a living thing. Nellesethai burns just as the sun, but much less wild. The fire of her soul, her anger and passion can be released and suppressed at will, but, there are certain times when emotions grow strong where control is difficult. As the energy that the lass uses is a part of her, using it wounds and tires her, however, it is well known that heat energy can produce kinetic energy and in turn, sometimes kinetic energy can produce heat energy, which the symbol can absorb. Just like with a normal person, she can’t take more than her limit. Just like the brightest star, the lass attracts others… not in the tradition sense but rather she has her own gravitational pull, with which she maintains her “shells”. The pull may be reversed or even completely nullified, as desired. It is well known that immense heat and pressure produce diamonds and it is no different with this one, however, due to the amount of power required, this process can take up to several days… using up a lot of energy. Due to the fact that the Bydo made the girl into their image all the way through, she can communicate telepathically and intercept area wide communications between the Bydo, however, she lacks any ability or knowledge in regards to interfacing.

Emperor-Consul Caracalla Draconis stood in an empty surveillance room, staring at a wall covered ceiling to floor with monitors. On each was displayed a video feed of the city below. Normally, he wouldn't have bothered to even glance at the goings on of the bydo occupation, but the numerous and varied delays in the search for the Stone-Like had made it such that this remained the only worthwhile pasttime.

The room was located at the heart of the Bydo flagship, a large, flat, hexagonal shaped vessel with no obvious front. It was a neutral beige color, except for where windows permitted view to the city below, and had all the charm of a state prison. The ship itself perched precariously atop a much smaller tower, in such a way that would (and did) boggle the minds of conventional engineers. The tower itself served the twin purposes of symbolizing the prosperity of human-bydo cooperation and secretly functioning as the headquarters of the Technocracy.

"These pathetic humans," Draconis thought to himself, as he gazed disinterestedly at the innumerable screens, adjusting his imperial robes to remove an uncomfortable fold. "Truly, they have no idea the power of the Empire. They scurry around like..."

Draconis stopped short. One monitor began to show static. "Ugh," he grunted, scowling with fury at the monitor, and placing his hand to his temple. As he concentrated, his hand began to glow dimly.

"Alice. I have a task for you."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Radus brushed his hands off on his baggy jeans and adjusted his collar. The alleway he was in contained, aside from himself, a dumpster, grafitti, and some trash, as well as a surveillance camera that he'd just broken. His ridiculously pink hair poked out from under a plain black beanie he wore, and his shirt was missing its sleeves, apparently torn off haphazardly.

"Where could they be?" Radus asked himself aloud. He was supposed to meet Kari and Scyrix here, but he'd been around for several minutes. The broken camera was sure to grab the attention of the Technocracy, and while it was fine if they saw him here--he could just play it off as an accident--it would be very suspicious if the three of them were still around when a Technocrat showed up to investigate.

Kari ran as quietly as she was able amongst the various alleyways within the city, her red hair askew and her various bangles jingling softly on her thin arms. Mentally chastising herself for being late, she kept a tight grip on her focus, eyes shifting to and fro as she passed alley after alley littered with garbage and broken machinery. She had forsaken her normal cheery attire for something a bit less noticeable--an old sweatsuit she'd found at the back of her closet. It would not do to be wearing a hot pink sweater when traipsing across this section of the city. Watching eyes would notice. She glanced about, looking for her friend Scyrix; whom she had told to scout ahead and search for hidden cameras amongst the grunge and filth of the backalleys. Every now and then she would feel something stir at the forefront of her mind; Scyrix attempting to communicate with her. Kari still wondered why Scyrix had chosen her as his closest friend even after his dangerous overuse of magic. She had never pressed the question though, afraid that the young man would withdraw even more into himself. After all these years in the Resistance, the older woman was still the only person he made an effort to talk with. She was also the only person he would listen to. She even had to repeat orders given by superiors to get him to obey. Kari often thought at times that it was a little frightening to have so much control over one person. Yet it wasn't as though she were forcing him to listen to her. He acceded of his own free will...

Camera here. Do not pass this way. Scyrix interrupted her private thoughts, which she quickly shoved to the back of her mind before he could notice. These words were followed by a brief image of his surroundings at that moment.

Kari surveyed the area, looking for an alternate route; and, finding none, called for the assassin. She watched with envy as Scyrix moved fluidly through the shadows, using his magical abilities to partially mask himself; the whip-like extensions on his back supporting his body as he catapulted from rooftop to window to brick wall in complete silence. With one flick of three of his tentacles off the wall, he was at Kari's side. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he knelt, closed her eyes, and held on tight. A few stomach-churning moments later, she felt him stop (though it was hard to tell with Scyrix, because his landings were so soft). She opened one eye, and found herself staring face to face with Radus Crossbone. Blushing slightly, she leaped down, brushing off her sweats in a nonchalant sort of way; as though exiting a vehicle. Mentally, she thanked Scyrix for carrying her safely to this spot. He assured her in turn, that they had passed no security cameras--or any other security measure for that matter--on the way here. As his tentacles receded under his trenchcoat, the spy glanced suspiciously at the broken camera and then at Radus.

Being an upper level member of the Technocracy often meant doing loads of paperwork. Alice was no exception to this. She sifted papers across her impeccably clean, polished hardwood desk, approving them for the Technocratic bureaucracy. The skin of her hands was barely darker than the whites of the forms she held or the lab coat she wore and each seemed to blend together into one another.

Near her, she could see Shinzui Ren through the clear glass walls of the office building. He was in his typical suit, intently staring at a blank computer screen in his office. She could feel him thinking furiously, but about what, she was uncertain. He was skilled at keeping his thoughts to himself, and all she could discern from his facial expression and body language suggested that, whatever it was, he was thinking about something important.

At that moment, Alice froze in place, as was common when she received messages from the Bydo. The frail woman closed her eyes as she listened intently to her instructions. They were always brief, but she felt graced by their presence each time, devoted as she was to the Empire.

A few brief seconds later, and the feeling passed, the message of her liege conveyed. Composing herself, she felt the the unusual clariy of purpose that drove her to obey the will of the Bydo. Alice breathed deeply, then attached her neckbrace. Once, in place and connected with her brain stem, she connected a small wire in her desk to a retangular port on its left side, and contacted one Charles Thane.

"Thane," she thought to him, "the security camera in alley 452 has gone offline. Investigate. Call in a squad leader if anything suspicious has happened."

There was no need to even thought-speak 'Thane here' or even so much as a query as to what his assignment was. After all, after his name was spoken into his mind by none other than Alice, one of his many commanders, one that he was often reporting to, unless of course it was the Squad Leader he was under, Jurgen Diederich.

However he had already visited the Quartermaster, and had acquired the only weapon he felt he needed, a silenced pistol of .45 caliber, a black polymer shell encasing a metal delivery system, rigged with a special frame on the inside that rendered it impossible for metal detectors to find. He had it concealed within the inside pocket of his black leather jacket, and he turned his head to the window of the coffee shop he currently sat in. Generally, before going out on 'patrols,' as he called it, Charles, or Thane, as he was commonly called, he picked up a sidearm, just in case he was randomly assigned a task.

He had, luckily, finished his cup of coffee and was just about to leave, and almost coincidentally, Alleyway 452 was only a couple of blocks away, a distance he could reach at a comfortable walking speed in less than fifteen minutes. He picked himself up, adjusted the waistband of his pants somewhat, as they had ridden up uncomfortably while he was seated, and walked out the door, having paid for his cup of coffee prior to actually acquiring it.

"Roger that." Thane thought back to Alice. "Moving to the area of the disturbance. I'll keep you posted." It was a routine thing. Generally, there were cameras that broke due to accidents or something not unlike accidents, but that didn't mean he wasn't hurrying. He ran a hand through his blond hair, which was rather short, as he walked, making sure he at least looked professional. Granted, he might have looked like a common thug, but that often played to his advantage. Made people confess more readily...

Her orders relayed, Alice leaned back in her chair. It was one of those flexible kinds, with wheels on the bottom. She wasn't sure why, since her work area was so neatly and efficiently organized that movement was often not necessary. Rare were the moments when more than her arms would be needed to change position to work.

Work wasn't something she had much to do right now, however. The Technocracy had been receiving fewer and fewer orders lately. Alice often "asked" her notepad why this would be the case, but the most likely answer continued to be that human-bydo relations were improving, and humanity was beginning to learn peace, after millenia of conflict. This made her happy, but it also bored her to death. The improvement of interspecies politics meant that the ideal of a peaceful world was coming ever closer, but it also meant that she was less and less needed.

Times like these only further exacerbated her boredom. Brushing broken strands of hair from her face, Alice glanced at her inbox. It was empty. It probably wouldn't be filled for some time.

The ticks of a small, wall-mounted, digital clock echoed off the walls.

"Well, I'm not going to let a camera malfunction be the high point of my day," she said aloud to herself, reaching into a drawer and producing a mug covered with a plastic seal. As she poked a hole in it, the dark brown liquid began to heat, swirling with a lighter brown that permeated the drink, settling it as some pleasant mediem, but still rich color.

"Coffee," she sighed to herself, as she tossed away the seal, filing into Shinzui Ren's room.

"Ren, shouldn't you be working?"

Ren looked up from his desk. "I am working, aren't you?"

Alice Sutter, the "puppet panopticon" as he liked to call her, was standing in the doorway to his office. She had one hand on her hip, and another holding a self-heating coffee mug. The steam from it was fogging up the glass wall she was standing next to, but was otherwise invisible, as it was paler in color than her skin. Her eyes had that creepy reddish albino color, in stark contrast to the lag of pigment elsewhere on her body. Despite her frail appearance, her posture communicated confidence and leadership, as well as a sang-froid that only made her seem even more unnerving.

Shinzui Ren was unaffected by this however. He had long since grown used to the appearance of his co-worker, as well as her demeanor. She often referred to him by what she thought was his family name, but due to his cultural customs, was actually his given.

Really, if either's appearance bothered the other, it would be his. The wiring and metal plating of his arm was clearly visible, and he was making a strange, metallic tapping sound on his desk, as he frowned at datafiles he'd brought up. Each one was more and more important, but less and less of good news. Ren was beginning to understand the meaning of the age old adage, "no news is good news."

"Alice," he started, looking up from his monitor, light from the ceiling reflecting off his glasses lenses into his boss' eyes. "I have a proposition."

Ren waved his hand over the monitor, and the files cleared, showing his computer's desktop, a plain blue rectangle. "We need to figure out how magic works. Every day, some of our people find out that it's not their fancy gadgets that let them do the things they do, and every time this happens, the chance that they'll slip into the hands of the resistance increases."

He was extra-careful with this subject. While losing operatives to the resistance was a pressing issue, he could not ignore the fact that all the evidence showed that the resistance found ways to more flexibly use magic than the Technocracy, and that their methods could not be ignored as a tool against overthrowing the Bydo overlords.

"Magic can't be something truly supernatural. Humans used to think that lightning was supernatural, but we figured that out, so why not magic? If we can scientifically determine the origin and cause of it, then we can rationalize it and drop this facade amongst our lower ranks."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Good, you're here. Listen," Radus added, hushing his voice and furtively beckoning Kari and Scyrix closer. A hovering surveillance drone noisily passed overhead, making odd whirring sounds as it patrolled the rooftops of the city. Radus thought he could see it stop out of the corner of his eye, when he ducked, his collar making a barely audible jingling sound, but it continued on its way so he ignored this.

Turning surreptitiously back towards his resistance compatriots, Radus continued. "First, something big's going down with the Bydo soon. The... contacts I have with the technocracy have given me these."

Radus produced a manila folder of documents, stamped with the seal of the Technocratic Union and the Bydo Empire. He carefully laid them on top of the lid of a trash can, next to a door labeled "Chang's Food Emporium" and began pointing out select phrases and diagrams.

"Look here. Here we can see a list of transmissions between the Empire and the Union. And here," he added breathlessly, pointing towards another page, "there's a list of internal communications within the Empire."

A gust of wind nearly blew this page out of Radus' hands, but he caught it in mid-air and placed it back where it was. "These show a massive increase in Imperial correspondence, but a drastic decrease in orders to the Technocracy. They use those guys as pawns all the time, so something has to be up if they're being so secret that they don't even want to show their own stooges."

"The problem is... I have no idea what they're planning. I can't figure out what's going on just from this. The contents of the communications aren't shown. I don't know what to make of this, or if there really is anything to make of it."

Radus stepped back, giving the other two a closer look at the records. "It seems weird as hell to me, though. What do you think?"
PostPosted: Sat Dec 16, 2006 8:01 pm

Kari bent closer to regard the diagram in more detail. Her eyes scanned the data quickly, her expression becoming more confused all the while. Scyrix, on the other hand, stood back; in silent contemplation of Radus' words. His eye unfocused every now and then; a sure sign that he was looking at these same diagrams through Kari, and was therefore considering the data in the same rigorous manner. After a few seconds, Kari looked up at Radus, apprehension dawning on her face.

"The only thing I can come up with is that they've got something big planned for humanity in general," she began hesitantly, her eyes blanked out for a few seconds as she consulted Scyrix for his views on the matter. "Scyrix says he thinks there's something they're trying to hide from all of us. The fact that they occupied this planet merely out of 'concern for our welfare' makes me believe that he's right. They must have had ulterior motives. Though I can't make out what those might be just by looking at this data. Damn, I don't even know if that's right; they could be talking about potting alien roses for all we know. Though if that is the case, I wonder what they're doing that they won't tell even their cronies about?"

She rubbed her shoulder thoughtfully. "We need more information, and obviously we're not going to get it from the Technos, since it looks like they're not getting the full story anyway. We need somebody to infiltrate those guys high up, and that sure as hell won't be easy." She glanced at Scyrix, wondering if even he could get through a Bydo base unnoticed. She sincerely doubted it, even with his skill. The whole job would be a risky business in any case. If they failed, the Bydo would begin to suspect that the Resistance knew something of these 'ulterior motives' and information would be even more difficult to come by; not to mention that it would mean certain death for any spies on the job.

I could do it. I am not afraid. Scyrix had been listening to Kari's private conversation the entire time. This comment incensed her. Abandoning telepathic communication entirely, she swung towards him, eyes flashing.

"I don't care if you're not afraid," she held her tone steady, trying to stay quiet. "You're not going, understand? You'd be caught, and then have your memory wiped. Or worse...." Her voice faded into silence, but she held her glare for a few moments after. Scyrix lowered his head, averting his eyes.

I will not, if that is what you wish. Satisfied, Kari turned again towards Radus, though the anxiety on her face did not dissipate.

"Ren..." Alice glanced away, her crimson eyes staring at a rigid, metal bookcase in Ren's own office. It was packed, ceiling to floor, with banned books on a variety of dangerous topics, titles ranging from Witchcraft Today to The Art of War, each showing obvious signs of frequent reading.

Alice gingerly sipped her coffee. It was still too hot.

"I don't think now is the best time." Even as she said this, she could feel protest welling up inside him. "I would change my mind, though," she added quickly, "if we had data from experiments." Alice ponderously paced the length of the front wall of Ren's office, staring at the floor beneath her in deep thought. This was, without a doubt, a massive change of policy, deviating wildly from nbrmal processes and procedures, which she herself had conceived and instituted for the sake of the Technocracy. "Yes, we need to approach this issue with scientific evidence backing us. Anything less, and we would be no different from the militant religious fanatics, whose atrocities plague our history."

Alice tested her coffee again. The temperature was bearable now, though the taste left plenty to be desired. "I agree with you, Ren. We cannot simply ignore the deserters, but to tell our people the truth immediately would only aggravate the problem."

She could see a dim red light flickering rapidly on the monitor on the desk in her room. Alice sighed heavily. Turning back toward her room, she spoke over her shoulder to Ren. "We can't just experiment on one of our own though, and we can't take someone off the street either. Not everyone can do these things."
