Katavi narrowed her eyes, staring into the horizon. It would never end, would it? No matter how far she went, it was still there; more land to travel and tease her, 'where are you going next?'.
A sigh escaped the lioness as she slipped into the shadows of a low hanging tree. A blanket of red bathed the savannah as the last of the sun was swallowed by earth, and twilight took over the silvery sky.
In the distance, her blue eyes could make out the glitter of water against the moon. A stream? Katavi limped forward, cautiously dipping her paw into the cool water.

He had never been much of a night lion, favoring the early morning hours for the later twilight. Something, however, had pushed him from his chosen sleeping rock of the night to wander in the dusk and think. The moon's time brought an entirely new chorus to his ears, one he did not often admire. Perhaps it wasn't such a bad thing to stay out late on occasion. The crickets were much louder now than at dawn, and the nocturnal creatures of the world were skittering about, creating an alien melody for Juke to hear.
The relatively small male padded as silently as he could, not wanting to disturb the nightly music. He blended with the eerie starlight, his ghostly coat shimmering like the stream he was slowly nearing. Another was on its banks, pawing at the current tenderly. Being the sociable creature that he was, he picked up the pace, bumping the beat of his song up a few notches to a faster, more lively rhythm. It took some bit of control to not call out to the lioness as he came to the water's edge. He didn't want to scare her away, after all, and decided quite quickly that he would allow her to make the first move of conversation, the first to add a sweet harmony to his currently wordless tune. Lowering a head to the water, he eyed her, only a few paces away, and lapped up the cool liquid.

Katavi was lost in thought, staring blankly into the still water that reflected the light of fireflies dancing above her frame. All that was heard was the soft cry of the wind as it weaved through the surrounding trees, and the hum of crickets. All was peaceful.
As she studied the water, something changed. Little ripples swam across the surface and smudged her reflection in the blue pool. A shadow fell over the water. Katavi looked slowly up, with wide, curious blue eyes. Then, she noticed him, casually lapping away at the water, as if she was not there. She growled and jumped back, baffled and surprised.
"Who are you?", she demanded.

Juke was honestly shocked at the lioness's anger. At least, he thought it was anger. For all he knew, it was mere annoyance. Either way, it was quite confusing and it had a very dramatic effect on the tune ringing in his ears. The peaceful melody had suddenly become abbrasive and abrupt, and it was just not his type of music. The male stood there stupidly, maw dripping wet, eyes completely zoned out. He had no idea why she was so agitated. Hadn't he given her the first solo? Perhaps she didn't find that as polite as he did.
His trance was broken suddenly as he realized the lioness was still staring at her and was waiting for an answer. "I'm uhm.. I'm Juke?" He hadn't actually meant it to be a question, but the awkward situation he suddenly found himself in had not allowed him to utter a statement.

Katavi narrowed her blue eyes into slits. She lowered her head and swung her tail violently from side to side. After a long moment of awkward staring, curiousity overcame the lioness' surprise and anger for being startled.
"Juke," she repeated, looking across the silvery stream at him and glancing at their dimmed reflections in the pool. "I'm Katavi," she muttered, leaning hesitantly down to lap at the glistening stream water.

For lack of a better emotion, the male grew even more confused. She was suddenly better now? Well, at least she wasn't angry. Not quite sociable, but not so annoyed that she couldn't stir up an answer. "Katavi's a real pretty name." Juke smiled kindly at the lioness, and took a moment to look over her coat. Unlike his, which was almost the color of the waters, hers actually reflected the light and the current. Though he sometimes shimmered, he would never be like a mirror as she was, with the light dancing on his hide. It was quite enchanting.
Breaking his trance, the male threw his gaze from her to the water, staring intently for a snack. The fish were not quite active at that hour, but there were a few sluggishly gliding down the way, and a few were all he needed. Actually, one was all he needed.

Katavi saw the confusion spread across Juke's face. "Pff", she hissed under her breath, amused that this 'Juke' was so sensitive over emotions. She couldn't understand him, all the same.
"Thanks," she said, after hearing his compliment. Katavi offered a weak smile in return and followed his gaze. Her eyes fell intently on the water. Peering closer, she could see the shadowy frame of a fish gliding through the water. She gingerly put forth a paw, sending spirals in the water that danced around her wrist. She steadied herself, narrowing bright blue eyes at the prey. She moved forward, sending a splash through the stream. With a swift movement, she had the fish struggling within her claws, and with another the slippery thing was dead.
She pulled it triumphantly towards herself, a grin spread across her lips. Karma. A voice whispered in her head, and a sudden chill ran down her spine. Be good, be good. She swung her head towards Juke. "I don't suppose you'd like some?," she asked nervously, gritting her teeth.

Juke wasn't one of those prideful males who couldn't take a gift from anyone and had to do everything for himself. Though he could easily catch his own fish, at the offer of having some of Katavi's prize, he couldn't help but lick his lips at the idea. Tastey little morsels, they were, unique to their own kind. Marine life tasted quite different from the land creatures that were usually a lion's prey, and Juke was one that liked variety. "Actually, I'd love some." He made a move towards her, taking a few steps, but thought better of going any farther than he was. Though she seemed a bit more cheerful than she had when he first came to the stream, he still felt she wanted space, and he would respect such a wish.

( When I was thinking about storing my SoA logs yesterday, I realized we still had this RP running. I completely forgot. xD;; I'm sorry! D: )
Katavi recognized Juke's hesitance, and gave him a grateful nod. She didn't want him any closer, and he seemed to know that. It wasn't that she felt he was a threat, or that she was shy, but that she valued her space. Just the short stretch of earth between them let her feel independent in a way she wouldn't had he come closer. And independent was... good.
She carved through the fish with an extended claw, and tossed a half in Juke's direction. She happily swallowed her half in a few swift bites, then turned her attention back to her acquaintance.
She shuffled awkwardly, peering at him, before sitting and wrapping her tail around her paws.
"What brings you out here?"
