"Hmph!" he fell back to the ground, rolled over, green eyes looking up again. Why did trees have to be so big and he so small? Even Athena, his own sister seemed to have a better knack for this then he did, and she was only a little bit bigger then him! Why did he have to be the youngest of them all? Why couldn't he be big like his big brother?
Hayate stood up, flicked his tail, wriggled his body and jumped up again, trying to grasp onto the trunk. It was a lone tree out here, not too far from the den, and he was trying to accomplish something on his own. But it wasn't working, not at all. His paws slipped again, his tiny claws scraping down the side, and his bottom hit the ground again.
He let go of the trunk and padded a few steps from it and curls up, wrapping his tail around himself. He wondered if Mana could climb trees, or Tamu, surely Tamu could. Then he remembered the mane Tamu had, Hayate hoped he got a mane one day. He sighed and rolled onto his back, looked up at the sky and sighed again.
"Why did I have to be made so small? Why can I be like Ger?"

Ger laid on the matted area where he spent many nights sleeping. Since the cubs were born he felt a bit claustrophobic in the den and came out to sleep outside. In truth, he preferred it out here. Open air, open sky, cool air, and even alone time to think and talk to himself. It was only when it rain did he go back into the den to sleep. Otherwise he would sleep out here. He did not mind getting wet at all, in fact, it was just water after all.
Looking around he noticed that he hasn't seen Hayate, the youngest of the litter, around. Strange, where was he? Ger got to his feet and stretched a bit, cracking his back and paws, before wandering around. Through his care for the cubs, he had noticed that they did not stray too far from the den, not very far otherwise he would have brought them back. The perimeter he allowed them to wander to was from the den to a quarter of the way to the Pride Lands, give or take a few yards, and then the circumference of that radius.
As he walked along, making sure he could see the den, the marking point of how far the cubs should go. Then again, what was Ger gonna do if they strayed further then the den but bring them back. He won't scold them, he won't yell, he won't discipline them, he would simply worry about them. Ever since the cubs were born, whenever he came across anything young, he would aid them it was as if he could not turn from anything young in need. Strange, huh?
In the distance he saw the little cub laying under a tree. Ger smiled and came over to him, purposely fell down and rolled to his side, his legs sprawled out. Hayate, just below his right paw, seemed to be looking up at the sky too. As the older male got there, he was able to grasp the last line of 'be like Ger'. Hayate had often said he wanted to be like Ger, strange since he wanted to be like Hayate in some ways. He had a defiant home, brothers and a sister, and was content. Ger was at conflict with himself a lot it had been since he grew into his juvenile stage. But after having a talk with Ez, it put him at ease that there may be a solution to his months of troubles, but it will take time to get it done.
"Hey Hayate, what are ya up to?"
He asked casually in his deep, caring, and nice tone.

Green orbs watches as some clouds passed by, white and poofy. They looked so soft, he wanted to fly sometimes, he wondered if Mana could fly up in the clouds, could touch them, he wondered if they felt soft too. Mana was so lucky to have wings, he wanted them too. Hayate wanted to be one of a kind, to be able to stand out among his siblings other then just being the small one.
Her turned his head and saw Ger coming, saw him roll, he laughed, as Ger laid on his back, Hayate wriggled his back and scooched closer to Ger, smiled content that his big brother was here. He wondered if Ger had heard him talking, he didn't say anything, perhaps he didn't know.
"Just, looking up now, I tried to climb that tree...I'm no good at it like Athena seems to b," he said softly, disappointment in his tone of voice. His ears fell back a little, why couldn't he be good at something too? The wind blew gently, and he smiled, he wondered if Mana had done it, or if it was just his imagination playing tricks on him.
"Ger, will I ever get big? Will I be like you and get a mane? I want to get big like you Ger...but I'm not good at anything..." he rolled over onto his stomach and watched Ger, a faint smile on his maw. "How do I get bigger? Are there others as tiny as me?"

Ger smiled and continued to look up into the sky, after all he was a 'sky-gazer'. He often wondered what the clouds were like, so free to move, going where the wind took them. Looking down at the world as it changed underneath them. They were so ideal and yet at the same time not. Ger wanted adventure, joy, and the vast emotions that accompanied. He could be so nice and protective at one moment and suddenly change into the violent and defensive lion he had to be under pressure just like the clouds.
"Hayate, you're not Athena. What she can do and what you can do are two different things. She may be able to climb a tree, but you can do other things that she can't. Tell you the truth, I can't climb that well either."
"Brother, you don't want to be just like me, otherwise, we will be exactly the same and that's boring." he said with a mocking/jocking tone. "Being big means nothing, be who you are, Hayate, that is all you can do. You will grow up too, you will get bigger over time and then someone will ask you what you are asking me. 'How do I get as big like you.' Hayate, just be happy being small while it lasts because it will not last long. Tell you the truth, Hayate, I used to be as tiny as you too. But I got bigger by being me."
Ger knew that he had his weaknesses and strengths just like everyone else. Hayate will have to learn that there are some things he cannot do and there are things he can. But what they both needed to learn is that they can strengthen their weaknesses.
The adolescent rolled to his feet and turned to the tree. It was a good size and there were some low branches on it too. Why not? Ger dug down and dashed to the tree, jumping up and digging his claws into the bark, snarling a bit as his weight pulled him down. He pressed up and moved a claw up before losing his grip falling down again, landing on his back. Quickly, he hopped back onto his feet and tried again and again until he managed to climb onto the lowest branch there. From there, he simply jumped to the next where he laid down and turned back to the cub, panting.
"See, I didn't give up and look where I am. You just got to....keep getting back up and try again. You'll do it too."
Damn my paws hurt...

Hayate blinked and listened to Ger. It did make some sense, being exactly Ger might be boring, but then he would be strong and everyone would like him. He could go to far away places, be big compared to other things. To be Ger would be so nice, but how to be himself when he didn't even know what he could do?
"But Athena is good at something, and your big, and everyone else it bigger the me, and I can't do anything," he said wriggling his tail a bit. What could he do? He was too small for everything. He had tried climbing trees a few times, and it never seemed to work.
Then he watched as Ger got up and ran towards the tree. Hayate scrambled to his feet and went after Ger, and watched his big brother try and get up the tree. At first it seemed like it wasn't going to work, he slid to the ground like Hayate had done before. But he got up and tried again, and made it to the first low branch, Hayate mouth fell open.
How?
Ger jumped from one branch to another and Hayate padded up to the trunk, looked where Ger's claws scraped into it, and then looked up at Ger again. "I dont know it I can...your taller than me...what if I fall again?"

"Then you must get up and try again. You won't know if you really can't do it if you don't try your hardest. I may be bigger than you, brother, but you are Dad's son. You are part leopard and they can climb trees with ease. Keep trying and you will be able to do it. I believe in you."
He said with a smile, his tail flicking a bit in anticipation waiting for the little cub to jump up and try. Being big was not good for climbing trees. There was a reason why lions did not. They were much heavier and harder to pull themselves up onto the branches. Ger had a hard time with it when he was a cub following Kujack around but he managed. He didn't want to show or tell Hayate, but that climb of his was very painful for him. He was lucky his claws did not come off from it. Ger was a big lion, it was true, and that meant a lot of weight and ...well, it was difficult.
"Come on, Hayate, jump up and sink those claws of yours into this tree. Pull yourself up and get to that branch."
THen it hit him...how does he get down from here?

Hayate listened to Ger and nodded and took a few steps back from the trunk of the tree. He had to try didn't he? He wriggled hit bottom and flicked his tail and ran towards the trunk, jumped into the air and clung to the tree with all his might. Though he was only about two feet from the ground, he had gotten up a bit farther!
He gripped into the trunk with his claws, but he started to slip again. He was going to start to panick but he just pulled one paw from the trunk, put it up a bit farther, and tried pulling himself up. Hey...it wasn't as hard, because he was lighter...because he was smaller.
Hayate smiled and moved his paws over and over each other until he got up far enough to grab onto a branch, he shimied his way up. But then when he grabbed the branch, he couldn't swing his legs onto the branch.
Ger! What do I do now?" he wriggled and tried to move onto the branch but still couldn't, he was so close, so close he could just see himself sitting on that branch now. "What do I do?"

"Let your instincts take control, do what you think you should and it will be right!"
Ger shouted, now on his feet. He was a bit concerned for his safety and at the same time wanting him to press forward for what he wanted to achieve. He knew he could do it, he was Kujack's son and his brother. He could do it. He was smaller meaning he was lighter. He had the traits of the leopards and the strength of a lion, he must be able to. The only thing that was stopping him was himself.
"Come on Hayate, I know you can do it! Bring yourself up! You can do it!"
He shouted out, encouraging the little on to keep going, there was no point in turning back now. Hayate was so close to being able to do it. Ger tried his best to keep his balance until his paw slipped. Half his body was over the side of teh branch. Quickly, he flung his tail back and dug his claws in pulling himself back up into a sitting position. Now he was more mindful of where his paws were.

Hayate wiggled and tried to pull himself up but his arms were getting so tired. He really didn't know if he could get up all the way. He was getting so mad at himself, almost to the point of crying because he couldn't get up onto a simple branch. "I'm trying..." he said softly, his tone of voice soft yet rasped because he was trying to stay calm and try to be strong. But it wasn't working well.
What would his mother say? What would his father say? He couldn't even get up a tree, they would be disappointed wouldn't they? Ger would be sad too, he couldn't let that happen he just couldn't.
Using all his strength he could force into his tiny arms he swung one of his back legs over the branch and pulled himself up a bit more. When he was on top of it he clung to the branch for fear of falling off. "I DID IT!" he said happily, getting all too excited. Ger had helped him, and he did it, he could do it after all.
"Ger....how do we...get down?" he asked looking down at the ground, it looked so far away from here.

Ger looked around. To be honest, he had no idea how to get down. All those times he followed Kujack around when he was cub, up trees. The only way he could get down was actually falling out of it and that always, usually 99% of the time, hurt. Looking up and down, Ger could see no way out of it. He was gonna have to learn how to get down just like he did getting up. Taking a deep breath, he jumped from his branch and clung into the bark, letting his claws sink in painfully as his weight pulled him down. Not long after, the male jumped down to the ground with little pain and stood up against the trunk just below his little brother.
"Come on, Hayate, jump on my back and lets go home. We can learn how to get down some other time."
He said with a bit of a smile. His tail swung behind him as teal eyes glanced up to the little black cub up in the branches. His claws were dug into the branch clinging to it. Ger knew that if he was to get the little one down, he was gonna have to. Beside, if Hayate did jump, he'd hurt his back and if he used his claws, scarred him. Ger, got down and backed up a bit.
1...2....3!
The golden male jumped up and held onto the branch with his forepaws, grabbed the cub by the scruff and fell down, the cub on top of him. Well, that could have gone a lot smoother....
"Hey....you...alright?"
He weezed.

Hayate watched Ger, clinging to the branch even more, he almost fell out of the tree! Hayate was apprehensive about getting down now, perhaps he could just stay up here? That could work. As Ger got under him, Hayate shook his head, he wanted him to jump? He might miss or he might hurt his big brother! He wouldn't do that.
"Maybe...I'll just stay here....its ok..." but before he could say anything else, Ger jumped up, grabbed onto the branch, which made it wobble which made Hayate cling, then he was pulled down. They landed on the ground, Hayate on Ger, and the cub tilted his head at his brother and laughed, "I think we'll have to work on that..."
He rolled off of Ger and shook himself, looked at the tree. He had conquered it, somewhat, "Ger, do you think...I'll get better at it?" He hoped he would, then he would be able to do something, and not just be the small one of the group all the time.

Ger rolled to his feet and nudged his brother softly.
"Of course, if we keep trying, we will be climbing trees just like Dad. And getting out of them too, hopefully."
He finished with a chuckled. Looking down at Hayate, he was quite proud of the little one for being able to do something like that. Sure they got hurt here and there, but that was what needed to be done. They got hurt in the process of trying and eventually got to it. Ger looked up at the tree and smiled. He made it up there and he knew Hayate could too.
"Hey, come on, it's time to head back, you are too far from the den."
He said sternly. He tried to frown but it ended up becoming a smile and then a chuckle. The male licked him softly and started to head back.
"You know, if you keep trying, brother. I am sure you will be higher than me someday and from that, become just as big as me."

Hayate smiled and pranced around Ger in a circle, puffing his chest out, smiling and laughing. He had done it, he was so proud of himself, but also fond of his brother for helping him. "Maybe we'll be able to climb higher then dad someday! You adn me, tag team," Hayate crouched downa dn wriggled his bottom and flicked his tail, "We could take em'"
With that thought of heading back Hayate jumped a bit and smiled, they could go home and take a nap now, would be so nice. And he would know he climbed a tree, that he nad Ger climbed a tree together. "Alright, lets go!"
He began to pad forward, but stayed at Ger's side, smiling, flicking his tail back and forth, he was so happy with himself. Be bigger then his brother? He doubted it, but it was a nice goal to have. To be as strong and big as Ger, to climb higher then anyone had before, so wonderful his thoughts were.
Today had been a wonderful day.
