Call me ignorant but what's the difference? Some places I look them up say they are the same thing, others say they are different.

As far as I know...
While philia (or philos) means love, mania means madness. So, bibliophiles are book-lovers, basically, and bibliomaniacs are mad for books. So, I suppose the difference is only by the degree of love.

The Marquis de Sade said that love was a form of insanity, so can we assume there really is no difference? wink

I always thought bibliomaniacs had a love for the physical object of a book, not so much the story in it. Like, you'll see collecters who buy the rarest first edition of something and wouldn't DREAM of reading it. And then I thought bibliophiles would see the bibliomaniacs and think "Why else buy a book if you won't read it?"

Fairgrass English really needs more words for "love," I think. wink So true. It's always interesting to see how many words for "love" are to be found in other languages.

Bibliomaniacs tend to not read as much as Bibliophiles do, they love books, but lean more towards collecting mass numbers of them than keeping a small amount they can actually manage.
I'm a little mix of Bibliomania and Bibliophilia. My Bibliomania only gets really bad when I'm depressed , or when I've had a bad day.

much to my shame, I probully lean closest to bibliomaniac, as I almost compulsively buy book dispite not haven gotten around to reading half the books I have (which is quite alot o_o ) it's not that I just buy books then leave them on myself, I just always find myself reading something else at any given time and I never got around to the book(s) I've set aside for later sweatdrop
but yeah, I always saw the difrence of bibliomaniacs and bibliophiles alot like the difrence of quantity over quailty

Hm, it seems I am also a bit of both myself. I love books and I love to read. The problem is my read-to-unread ratio keeps growing more and more out of proportion every two weeks or so when I buy more books. I do intend to read them all some day, I just always seem to find sales and good deals on books that I can't refuse.

I have made a new year's resolution to read more of my own books rather than always checking them out from the library. So far I've managed to keep close to that goal. In the month of January five out of the six books that I read were ones that I owned. My book purchasing also went down because I only bought three books in this last month.

I collect books, but on the flipside, i've read all except for 2 books i own, and i own close to 1000 books. So i guess i'm a bit of both. Mad about reading, and mad about collecting books.

I'm addicted to reading, and I don't really actively collect books, although I am proud of my collection smile I can't help it. I buy them at the thrift store for a dollar apiece!

I think I can now say for certain that I have bibliomania. I went to see my hairdresser this weekend and for some reason people will bring in unwanted boooks and leave them in her salon. She leaves them out for anyone to take. She had a big pile so I liberated about 20 of them even though I still have 4 in my "to review" pile and about 20 in my "when I find time pile" and I'm expecting another box for review this week. It's so sad stressed

I guess I'm weird, I'll read anywhere from 2 to 5 books at the same time... it depends on whether or not a bunch of good books came out... I am both I guess...
