In my theatre department, my director likes to keep a habit of doing at least one feminist type play a year. Last season it happened to be two, cause the minor musical was all-female. Heheh. She does this because she believes that theatre is a profession still male dominated and she's doing her part to bring money and recognition to all-female plays.
So what do you all think about all-female cast plays? I've kind of noticed that they tend towards the dramatic side a little more than plays with both male and female roles. Maybe that's just been in my experience. The two female-cast plays I've been in were Song of Survival and Quilters. So dramatic you want to rip your heart out and throw it at somebody, but really cool at the same time. We got the student tech director to cry at SoS. Like sob. I'm not kidding you.
So anyone else have tales to tell or opinions to shoot forth about all-pheemayl cast plays? Speak now.

Crimes of the Madhouse.
It's set in an 18th-century insane asylum.

Hehe...Quilters was the first show I ever did...I have to admit, I didn't like parts of the show, but I liked the show as a whole. I still sometimes end up humming "Pieces of Lives" to the chagrin of my friends.

Stealing Sugar is a one-woman play that was done recently here. I loved it, merely because it was hilarious and the woman doing it was a comical near-genius. blaugh

^_^ My first play (this last spring) was The House of Bernarda Alba - it has an all-female cast. It was great since I go to an all-girls school, but since our theatre director is male, it balances out ^_^

Auriel Nightbane Hehe...Quilters was the first show I ever did...I have to admit, I didn't like parts of the show, but I liked the show as a whole. I still sometimes end up humming "Pieces of Lives" to the chagrin of my friends. I hate how the sad moments are always busted up by a happy song (until abouts country crossroads). NO transition time. And yeah. Pieces of Lives still bugs near everyone in the cast. It's great. I loved Dandelion and Butterfly. And of course, the Demise of Sunbonnet Sue! Did your cast have a chorus? My director adds a chorus member for every quilt block, it's really cool. I dunno if it was just some wonky thing my director did or if other directors have done it too....

I've been in a few all-girl shows. Except they were reviews. The high school theatre company here (SPA Co.; Summer Performing Arts Company) split us up into 4 shows a summer: a big musical of mainly upperclassmen, a smaller musical of underclassmen, a drama and a review. It always sucked being in the review, cause it was basically known that they cast the shows first, and whoever was left got put into the review. Due to the general shortage of male talent, the reviews were always all-girl. It kind of sucked, but the experience was tons of fun.
Also, I was in Quilters as well, about 5 years ago now. We had a relatively small cast of 10, including 2 guys (one of whom I'm still very good friends with to this day biggrin ) I love Dandelion! It's been so long since I've heard any of the music from that show.

"When Shakespeare's Ladies Meet" man. I LOVE that play, and when I got to do it, i was psyched!!! It is absolutely AMAZING! you learn about 6 great female ingenues of Shakespeare's all in one great play! I was Ophelia, and I officially have fallen in heart with her...well not like that...lol. but it is great.
My first all-female cast as well, lots of fun!

We did a play called A Piece of My Heart by Shirley Lauro. It was originally written for 6 female leads and one male lead. The male's part, though, was to play several different males throughout the play and sometimes the females played different parts as well. So, my director decided to have 6 female leads, 4 supporting females, and four guys. It got kinda confusing. Mind you, I really didn't like the play. It was not well written at all. And yes, with the mostly female cast it was reallllly dramatic at parts. Monologues going ON AND ON about lost loved ones and about the tragedy of war (it was about the Vietname War). I was an understudy for it and I wouldn't mind acting it out, but I couldn't imagine buying a ticket for it on purpose.

All I know..that we did this show this year. It only has one guy in it though. The Children's Hour. There is another guy part, but we made it a female for the person only had two or three lines.
