How much does lyrical content effect your like/dislike for bands?
NSBM being a great example. Do you listen to it? If not is it because you don't like the style of music or because you are totally against the lyrics?

I don't think lyrics are a big deal. It's a plus when I can relate to them (as I obviously can't with NSBM), but in general, the actual instrumentals are most important to me. I enjoy a few NSBM bands. I don't support them by buying their merch, but that's what Souseek is for. biggrin

I do listen to bands that have lyrics that really touch me but I cant listen to a band with great lyrics if their music is shitty. I hate when people come up to me and have me listen to total s**t and ask me "aren't the lyrics great". I will tell them that I think it sounds like s**t and they will be arguing about how the lyrics are so great

I feel that lyrical content isn't particularly important. The difference I see however, is that when I listen to a song because of how it sounds and not because I can relate to the lyrics it gets old and stale faster.

I'll have to agree with that second part, but being a vocalist myself, I can't stand a band that has a shitty one (vocalist of course) ... just a thing I guess.

I'll have to agree with that second part, but being a vocalist myself, I can't stand a band that has a shitty one (vocalist of course) ... just a thing I guess. well yeah, if the vocalist sounds bad, then the band usually sucks. A bad drummer is the worst though.

Ha, yeah. A bad drummer can be the difference between a band sounding like the sort of hard rock you'd hear in a bar, and some heavy ******** metal.

i think lyrical content is an afterthought... i do love when a band has powerful lyrics but what im usually looking for is the overall feel of the music more than anything

Well, the music is sometimes very good, like Nokturnal Mortum or Graveland, but I dont support their believs, because for me all humans are the same. s**t. And for me, elitism is the right way, but you cant hate just one colour then.

I flat out refuse to listen to most NSBM anymore simply because it is probably the most vile movement within black metal to ever exist, even going beyond their lyrics and looking at who those people are and how they live.
I cannot listen to black metal that is so repulsive, no matter how good the sound is.
Sorry to say, music is more than simply coordinate notes to me, and lyrics don't particularly sway my opinion, but I don't tolerate stupidity unless it's humorous. For example, Coven has some of the SHITTIEST lyrics ever, but they know it. They make it funny. The members themselves are actually intelligent forms of life, they know what they're doing, and it's entertaining to listen to as well as laugh at.
In any case, it's not generally the lyrics themselves in most cases and it doesn't apply to all musical movements. But there is an impact.

Nazism = NS, but not all forms of NS are Nazi.
Also, not all national socialists are racists. It's just the 95% trend that national socialists are racist/anti-semitic/whatever else.

I think that Black Metal is more of a musical style than lyrics, but I can't listen to it... because of this and my love for NSBM, I actually thought I might have been a Nazi once...
