Judge says he'd kill all pit bulls without hesitation

RIFLE - A Garfield County judge says pit bulls are too dangerous to be loose in society, and if he could he would kill every pit bull.

Judge Jason Jovanovich was overseeing a hearing this week regarding a September pit bull attack. Seventy-four-year-old Judy McGruder had stopped at a home in the western Colorado town of Silt to ask directions when she was attacked by a pit bull named "Butterbean." The attack left her with muscle damage, cuts and puncture wounds.

The judge sentenced the dog's owner -- 32-year-old Julie Dawn Sullivan -- to community service, fines and probation.

He compares pit bulls to sharks or lions and says they belong in zoos and should be illegal.

The judge said, "If I had a big red button right here that would kill all the pit bulls, I wouldn't hesitate to press it."

OMFG Pit Bulls, like rottwilers and dobermins are all good dogs if the owner treats them right and teaches them right and wrong like you do with a child. The only ones taht are dangerous are the ones that are not trained, that are abused and not taught taht humans are to be treated with respect. These are bigs dogs and they WILL take advantage of people if given the chance. If it happens at a young age frequently, it becomes habit and that's when someone gets bitten.

Although I'm tempted to agree with you and call the judge a moron, I think he's more uninformed than stupid. It could be that he handled so many pit bull cases, that he ends up thinking all pit bulls are the same. However, one does have to wonder how he became a judge if he generalizes creatures so easily and believes the sterotypes of pit bulls. confused

That just feels wrong to me. Doesnt' he know that most dog bites are actually from show dog breeds like German Shepards or even Poodles?

Plus, how would he know what is a pit bull? Pits are not an official breed. They don't have certain standards or bloodlines, it is a very vague thing.

Could you do something about the stretching page? It's annoying.

Just because Pits aren't recognized by the AKC does not mean they're not a breed.

The American Pit Bull Terrier has breed standards, champion bloodlines, etc. All of it is done in the UKC (United Kennel Club) as opposed to the AKC. I prefer UKC to AKC anyhow... They're better about not being in it for the money.

There are far too many people like that. However, you can just try to change people one at a time. In fact, the only dog my grandmother has petted (and originally she thought pits were mean) for many years since being bitten by a lab, was my pit/stafford terrier mix. One person at a time is all it takes.

However this guy has really struck a nerve with me. I am a marine biology major with a special focus on sharks. Calling either sharks or pit bulls vicious killers is just a gross form of missinformation.

Isn't that just the things these days? neutral

Stereotyping I mean.

Everyone does it or has done it at least once in their lifetime and unfortunately it tears apart our society. Such as the 'pitbull' stereotyping.

What bugs me about it all is thoughs judges and most likely never had a pit bull as a pet. No one should have the right to say they would kill pit bulls or any other type of dog without eithen having any expiriance with the breed.
It annoys me when people see the rotties we have in the kennels I work at and say they should be killed because a totaly diffrent rottie attacked someone and they feel that they are a danger, when really they just tend to flop down for a rubbed tummy and a cuddle and dont ask for much more then that.

If thats the case that because one dog attacked what does that say for humans who kill and attack people... doesnt that mean humans should be killed off because were a dangerous animal and unpredictable....

Sometimes, ignorance is a more of a curse than a blessing.

I love pitties and never even had one as a pet! They are very sweet animals and in fact are the least likely to ever attack a human being because in the pits if they bit a human, that is instant death! There are hundreds of thousands deaths from automobiles every year but only about three pit related deaths a year.
I have a heart for the misunderstood breeds. Dobbies, pits, and rottis. If you have to worry about a bred I'd worry about the cocker spaniel.
