The small tangerine and black female wandered through the forest, somewhat lost in thought. She had hunted successfully earlier in the day - she was getting better at it - and was now simply wandering to fill time. It was lonely to be by herself, without her mother at her side as he had so often been, but Maia was beginning to get used to it.

She was searching vaguely for somewhere to spend the night. The sun had gone down and her breath was misting in front of her showing how cold the nights were getting. The moon was large and round, tonight, with a large, glowing, white halo of light around it.

As she walked she didn't try to conceal herself much - she had found that her colour made it pretty much impossible to do so in the stark winter landscape. She now just made it clear she was around in case others wanted to take the chance to slip away. She had become more confident, now, and wasn't so worried about running into other wolves - male or female.

Her head came up as she scanned the surrounding area, nose flaring, ears swivelling.

He howled and howled and then he barked a bit, then he ran around in circles several times before trying to eat his paws again. His paws seemed to be the best meal and were always there, lucky really.

He was an odd wolf, not normal in the slightest. He was lonley with only the voices in his head to look after him and they weren't always telling him the good thinbg to do. It was as if he had several wolves in his head and he had to handle each ones desires.

This had made a lovely son into a completely confused and lost animal.

He didn't have the best history in the world, being born to Diego cursed him from the start, his mother looked after him so carefully and removed him from having anything to do with his father but it seemed that did nothing for the wolf now eating his paws in the middle of the forest had lost any sanity that had once been inside him.

He was lost, confused, alone and completely unaware of the female that was around, not far from him.

Maia's ears pricked up as she heard the yips and howls from nearby. Cautious but curious she walked towards the sound. A male about her own age seemed to be doing some sort of strange dance, or moving as if insects were biting on his toes. She wondered if there was something wrong... maybe he had trodden in something which was making his paws painful?

She studied him for a moment. He was a fawny colour with bright blue and purplish markings. A little white crossed his legs and tail, two tear shaped marks above his eyes. He was certainly unlike any other wolf she had seen..

Feeling a little sorry for the male, even as she felt uneasy about being near him, she walked forward. "Hello..?" Normally her natural wariness around males would have stopped her approaching but the last few she had met exhibited no signs of the evil nature her mother had promised her they posessed. She had no idea that Chip was closer to her mother's image of a male than the grey could have imagined.

Chip looked up and smiled.

"Hello!" He was able to say that word without letting the other words fall out of his mouth from the other wolves inside his hair.

He looked at her trying not to say anything, he didn't want to speak because he knew what would happen so he laid their whimpering. Crying. He wanted to explain to her what was in his head and try and actually talk to this girl but it would probably not happen.

Maia approached the odd male slowly, looking down at him, her red eyes trying to figure out, still, what was wrong. He seemed a little... desperate. She didn't know why that seemed so... maybe the tone of his hello compared to his posture, maybe something in his eyes, maybe just the sheer look of him...

Either way she came a few steps closer, stopping quite close by but far enough not to feel threatening. "Are.. you ok?" she asked, lowering her nose towards the male, trying to figure out what had happened to him. His feet looked a little bloody though what from she couldn't figure out. "Can I help you?" she wasn't usually so forthcoming but her past few experiences had taken the edge off her wariness.

Chip whimpered a little more, he didn't want to scare her. It took a while for him to say anything, he was really trying to do this properly and it involved alot of thinking before he allowed himself to say anything.

"I..Im insane." Was all he dared to say right now, at least now he would be ablt to talk without taking ages to decide what he was going to say.

He just hoped being honest wouldn't scare her either.

Maia paused, honestly not sure what the hell to reply to such an answer. She'd never come across a wolf who was insane before, never mind one who admitted it outright. Her wariness level stepped up once again as she regarded the fawn and blue male.

He looked a little scared himself, she realised. Although she was wary Maia was also curious about this stranger and his proclamation.

"In..insane?" she wondered aloud, wondering what could have happened to make this wolf tell her so as almost his first words.

He nodded his head and then looked up at the sky as if he was avoiding to talk. He didn't want her to leave, he wanted a friend, someone to be close to, to care for... to maybe even love but the voices controlled him.

He looked back at her and smiled trying to figure out some way of communicating that wasn't through vocalising his thoughts. He then laughed and jumped about, his tail wagging in the air happily, his posture shouting out play. That was the only thing he could think of right now.

Maia looked at the male, watching a complex range of emotions cross his face. There was something there, deep down, which seemed as though it was painful for him.

As a pup Maia had never gotten to play much. Brought up around adults, she had only played by herself or occassionaly with her mother when the mood had taken her. Most of her childhood had been a rial - moving from place to place almost daily when she was a pup, finding a new home in a pack where she felt confined, learning to hunt and be strong as her mother wanted. She hadn't had much spare or free time, really, once she had begun training...

Her response, then, to this puppyish playful behavior was a moment of stillness. She was unsure - like a pup first meeting the whole of their pack. How should she respond, behave? Then instinct kicked in and she mimicked his pose, her tail wagging only a little less due to her slight wariness at this very odd male.

Her eyes, though, showed she was somewhat happy at this chance to act like a playful youth when she'd had a few rather trying weeks.

Chip was a little worried at the delay of her movement but when she did move he let out a small bark like sound and jumped at her, his tailstill wagging and a playful growl in his throat.

He knew that had to have been a way to communicate without talking and though he knew he wouldn't be able to play with all the wolves he met, it seemed to be an ok thing to do with this girl.

Maia, still somewhat unsure of males, was at first a little startled by this playful challenge but she moved forward herself, engaging in the mock challenge with a high, short growl of her own. Her wolfish maw crept into a grin as she let out a soft yip and darted forward to push against the male - a light nudge against his shoulder with her muzzle.

She wasn't really sure about how such things should go but it just felt right to tease the other by skipping back once again out of reach, her small frame wiry and fast.

Chip wasn't small, fast or witty so she had a huge advantage over him. He found his little odd barking alot more playful then catching her!

He rushed at her, jumping to the side as he neared her, then jumping back in a different direction. He was just jumping about with no idea on what it was that he was suppose to be doing. He had played as a pup with his siblings but his mother had taken him away from his family to help him. It didn't seem to have worked though.

The female, getting into the mood of the thing, yipped a playful taunt and ran around Chip, trying to get to his tail - much as she had often tried to do to her mother when she was young. She couldn't quite grasp it, though.

It was odd that this pair of wolves, so bereft of childhood playfulness, should come together in this odd, confused dance. Both of them seemed so much to want to play... Maia was feeling oddly elated, like something, for once, was going right. Even if she still didn't have a clue what she should be doing! Her bright orange fur flashed as she tried once again for his tail, a soft yip issuing from her playfully.

It seemed so perfect. She went after his tail and he went after hers. He moved around clumisly, tipping at odd moments. He wouldn't speak or even open his mouth so he was concentrating on that more then anything else which could possibly be the reason that the adult wolf was close to being caught by the female.

He was having fun though, somewhere inside his crowded mind he was having alot of fun.

The bright orange female moved in a flash as she chased her new friends tail. The pair of them ended up turning circles around each other and Maia suddenly stopped and thumped down onto her haunches, laughing. She was too dizzy to stand and her paws had begun to twist around each other as she had chased the male.

Giving out a playful growl the female looked at the male, her vision still swimming a little, "You haven't told me your name, wolf." She grinned, glad she had come across this strange male, all his earlier words forgotten for the moment. "I'm Maia." she said, feeling that if she was going to ask for anothers name she should really give her own.

A few weeks ago, she would not have been so outgoing, so ready to make a friend, especially with a male but she had begun to see that the wisdom of her mother was blinkered when it came to the masculine members of the species. Maia herself had found kindness, boldness, joy and perhaps a vague hint of friendship. Male's, she was beginning to realise, were as different to each other as females.
