Who: Relm & Kaleb
What: catch up on things, but specifically to talk about the Turks.
When: Sometime after Kaleb's Midnight At the Office & Relm's Finding Warmth
Where: A rather large park in the city

Since they're in a city park, anyone can stop by. just try to time it well. *grins*
Relm as WhiteMage (non audio)

Relm was very glad her pocket was just as magical as it had been during her adventures to save her world. It made Christmas shopping a whole lot easier. She smiled to herself, snuggling into the warm cloak of her WhiteMage DressSphere. I'll have to thank Blondie for making my SphereGrid for me. The pictomancer mused, while still laughing to herself about having been shopping at all. It seemed not that long ago she was telling Keme she was not going to be shopping for Christmas. Relm hugged a parcel to her chest underneath her cloak. Well, a girl had the right to change her mind, didn't she?

Kaleb had found a nice, snow-free bench in the park to sit that afternoon and get some fresh air while he studied for his upcoming examination. It was chilly, so he wore his old, yet well cared for jacket, and sat in the sunniest corner of the bench with his usual large book sitting in his lap. He couldn't turn the pages of the book with his mittens on, so they just magically turned themselves when he needed it.

Humming her song softly as she took a shortcut home through the park, Relm thought she saw a familiar studious form sitting on a bench ahead. She hurried her pace, tossing up tiny drifts of snow with her boots. There was no denying it was Kaleb when she got closer. "Espers! Scholar! It is you! It's been ages! How've you been?"

The pictomancer stopped perhaps a foot away, smiling at him. A funny light glimmered in her eye as she thought that the last time she had seen Kaleb he had been the one dressed as a White Mage.

Kaleb glanced up from his book when he heard the familiar voice, and he smiled when he recognised Relm. "H-hi Relm," he said happily. "I-I'm doing okay, how about you?" He was a little surprised at her choice of outfit that day, wondering if perhaps she had white mage training that she hadn't told him about. That would be interesting, to talk magic with another white mage for a bit.

How to answer that? "Good, I guess. Just doing some shopping." With a smile she indicated her parcel, the only present she had not stored in her pocket. She glanced down at the large tome on his lap. "That book's nearly as big as you are, Scholar. Couldn't you have picked a smaller one?"

Of course, Relm -being only five foot tall- was not very big herself. She could not imagine wanting to leaf through such a large book.

But something else also struck her curiosity & she raised a brow. "You've a spell for turning pages? That's kind of like Remus & the Weasleys' magic." She looked him over, as if "seeing" his magic. "I thought you were a white mage, with your shields & healing."

"I-it's actually one of my smaller books." He admitted, blushing slightly. At least this one was small enough for him to carry on his own, without using magic to help him. The mage smiled a bit when she brought up the magic he was using to turn the pages. "It's not specifically a page turning spell, it's just an air weave that's directed in a fine manner to move the sheet of paper. It could be used for anything that needed moving."

Relm moved, sitting beside him & "watching" the magic. "That's more technical, more fine than my magic. Well, my regular magic anyway." Tilting her head she gave Kaleb an odd look, as if debating something inside her head. "The magic I use when I paint is more intricate like that."

She shrugged, as if that could wait. "So what are you reading, that you need a smaller large book?"

Kaleb smiled lopsidedly. "I-it's not quite as intricate as some of my diagnostic and healing magic." That was one of the reasons he took so quickly to healing, most of the skills he would have needed to be a surgeon readily transfered to his manipulation of magical weaves. "I've never heard of using magic in painting, you must need really fine control for that."

The mage looked a little torn between wanting to ask and learn more about her magic, and answering her questions. "I'm studying for my examination, this book is a concise description of the evaluation protocols and requirements."

Now Relm was a little confused. "Examination?" In Thamasa everyone simply learned as they grew. "And what do you mean, healing's complex? Cure's usually the first spell anyone in Thamasa learns. Sure some of the more powerful ones take more time to learn, once you find a teacher, but Cure & Antidote are simple."

She grinned sheepishly. "Of course still nothing to cure a cold." Relm remembered, an almost fond look crossing her face.

Kaleb nodded. "I-I can't get any farther in my research without access to advanced literature, and this is restricted to liscenced individuals who have undergone extensive testing to be certain they have the capacity to handle the spells." For a second he looked mildly irritated. "They have turned down my application to take the test twice already because they think I'm too young, and they are still reserving the right to have me omitted from latter portions of the test if I do poorly in the beginning."

He blushed when he realized he had been rambling on like that. "S-sorry, I didn't mean to ramble... Cure is a basic and useful spell, but for especially traumatic wounds you can get a better effect using more specific and localized healing, and at less energy expense."

The artist looked irritated at age being a discrimination. "Oh, Espers! When will people stop seeing age as something to hold against us? Why if I hadn't followed Grandpa Strago & the others after they said I was too young who's to say whether they would have succeeded against Kefka or not?" She was certainly in a huff, seeming to forget for the moment about Cure being a basic spell -which truth be she agreed with.

"Grrrr. I've not been so mad since that Rufus ShinRa insulted my artistic ability because I used magic to facilitate it!" Her tail swished angrily as she fumed, remembering her hurt pride anew.

"S-sorry, I-I really didn't mean to irritate you," Kaleb stammered, quickly detecting the change of mood and looking down at his book in embarassment. He knew there was some logic to restricting ages for such testing, only a small handful of people actually passed those tests each year, and it would require enormous amounts of skill and practice to even come close to mastering the elements they would have access to after passing. He didn't want to say all that out loud though, fearing it would upset his friend further.

"Y-you met Rufus ShinRa?" He asked as he heard her last comment, looking up in surprise.

"Oh, you didn't upset me, Scholar." She smiled at him, though it was clearly a bit forced Relm meant well. "It's those bigots! If it's just a test than there's no rational reason to hold someone back on account of their age. That's what the test's for anyway, isn't it? To see if the testee has the skill or knowledge or ability or whatnot?"

Her face darkened slightly, thinking about the ShinRa president. "Yeah. You could say that I had the fortune to meet him." She said fortune as if she really meant to say misfortune. "He & his "secretary", Tseng." That word too, clearly said in such a way that showed Relm suspected more to their relationship than she had been told. "It's 'cause of that I've not been back to the city since really."

Then she sighed, giving Kaleb a weak smile. "I had to paint them, you see... They were so intense." Her demeanor took on an entirely different air than any she had borne around the mage before. Almost a rapture as she remembered the experience of the painting & nothing else for a brief moment.

Kaleb nodded weakly, although he was still a little on edge. "I-it's not common for anyone younger than their late thirties to pass these tests, usually anyone younger hasn't had the practice to handle the magic they would have access to."

The mage chewed on his lower lip, Relm obviously had no fond feelings for his employer, and he found himself a little unsure of what side of that line to walk on. "R-Rufus insulted you because of your magic?"

Light green eyes narrowed. "He implied rather pointedly that I was no master of my art if I had to use magic. Had to! Had to! As if I had to do anything I didn't want to do! Ruined a perfectly wonderful painting experience with his "know everything" airs." She was in a right seething fury, to be sure. "I was so close, so close to bringing a Meteor down on his arrogant head! That would've done wonders to his pristine white suit & perfect hair. And to think I thought I was falling for him..." The artist shuddered distastefully.

She huffed, holding her parcel tightly & trying to calm herself down. "He said that he'd 'learned the value of doing things without the aid of magic'. That he 'preferred things that were more natural'. Well, Magic is natural. For me anyway. And it's everywhere. Naturally." Relm was a little spent from her tirade but continued. "Far more natural than some of the ways paints are made, that's for sure."
