OK, this has been bugging me all night lastnight,

Why doesn't wind move gravity
Why doesn't wind move light
BUT why does wind carry sound?

What is up with that?
PostPosted: Tue Dec 05, 2006 5:29 pm

Think of sound (this may or may not be correct) as merely the movement of the particles in the air. Most things like Sound, Light, (and some believe Gravity as well) move through physical mediums. Sound moves through air, and so the wind effects it. Light was once believed to move through a physical medium called 'Aether' or Ether, but if I'm not mistaken, I think light is it's own medium? I can't remember.

...I don't think that was a good enough answer. sweatdrop Forgive me

I don't believe gravity is matter; Therefore, it can't be moved.

Gravity is affected by mass so while each particle of matter produces gravity. It's completely swamped by the infinately larger Earth's.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
I think the reason why wind doesn't carry gravity, is because gravity exists everywhere, exept deep space, and inersia(sp?) keeps it "in check", as one might say.
I also believe that wind does not carry light because light is faster than wind and is able to pass through all objects.
I do not know why, though, wind carries sound, sorry.

well you can't refract light by simply blowing through it.

For gravity, it's a force applied on all objects of certain mass that attracts these towards the center of the earth.... so euhm.... there is no way you can move that

light does not move through everything. When it can't go through a certain object it creates shadows

Yeah, i was wondering more on the lines of why sound can be carried and not light.

Sound is a wave, and light has characteristics that make it behave like a wave sometimes, and a particle at other times. It's - pretty complicated. When you get to the waves unit in physics, you'll understand it better sweatdrop

Sound is simply a pressure wave, the particles in the air keep bouncing off of one another until they reach your ear, where biology takes over and interprets this pressure wave as sound. Wind is simply air that is moving from high pressure zones to lower pressure zones, so sound is 'carried' in wind because the pressure wave gets a bit distorted by all the moving air particles.

Light on the other hand is made up of photons, which have particle-wave duality, so it acts a bit funky. Also, light travels at the speed of... light, so nothing can really affect it except for gravity fields (though scientists have slowed and even sped up light).

elements of the wind somehow prevent it from carrying those things.

Gravity is the force of attraction between objects with mass.
The wind is the movement of the air (molecules of oxygen, CO2, nitrogen, other elements in the atmosphere).
Sound is a compression wave in the air (vibrating particles).

Wind carries sound because wind is just moving air. Moving air will maybe help the vibrations of a compression wave (sound) faster, and farther (not sure).

Light is made of photons or just little packets of energy that travel extremely fast. Wind (moving air) is not dense enough to have much of an affect on light.

Wind does not move gravity. And gravity only moves wind very very slightly if at all. The planets gravity holds all the atmosphere attached to the planet. But gravity being the weakest of the 4 or whatever fundamental forces, wind can still move around as it likes...within the atmosphere.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up.

okay, gravity is stronger than the force of wind
light moves to fast for wind to move
sound travels through all matter, liquids, ect.
It's all different energy, different pricniples
