Selene snorted, going asbout her Wednesday rounds. Thus far, she hadn't run across any bees, or bitey bugs. In fact, today she was enjoying a day off from being a mother. It was heavy steps she took today, very unlike a flutter's steps.

It being an exceptionally cold Wednesday, Safi was doing what he liked to do best: stay warm. In this case, that involved curling up in a little hollow in the ground and wrapping up in his wings, burying his nose in the feathers and seeing if he could catch a little snooze. Well, trying, anyway. But hey, beggars couldn't be choosers, could they?

Selene, moving slowly, therefore had plenty of time to notice the feathery, oddly-coloured ball of... Safi. Indeed, it took her a moment to recognize the stallion, all wrapped up in himself like that. Stallions. "Hello!" she said, brightening a bit lot. After all, it had been a while since she'd spoken to someone who wasn't either crying 'Mommy, I'm hungry', or 'Selene, I know I'd said I'd watch the kids today, but...'

Oh, oh, and her favorite? 'What kind of a mother are you? If you didn't want the responsibility, you shouldn't have made the decision to get with child!' That one annoyed her. There was a difference between wanting children and wanting a break... though as of late, the second was being wanted with the same all-consuming passion as the first had been.

Blinking a bit at the unexpected greeting, Safi pulled his head out from where it had been nestled under his wing, blinking a bit at the bright afternoon sunlight. Still, it only took him a moment to get his bearings, and when he had he brightened into a grin of his own. "Well well, if it isn't...Selene, correct?" A long time had passed since he'd seen her and their original meeting hadn't been too long to begin with...but there was no way on earth that Safi could forget the face of one as distinctive as Selene! That didn't mean he couldn't forget her name, though.

Still, he knew he was close if not right on the ball; how could he forget their "Team S" discussion? Chuckling a bit at the memory, he swept back his wings and rose to his feet, trotting right up to meet the mare. It would be nice to have a catch up...and for the first time in a while, that didn't mean getting snarled at! "Been a long time since I've seen you!"

"Indeed." her voice was cheerful. She smiled at the stallion, feet shuffling. "So, what have you been doing? Made it to Kalona status yet?" she remembered the joke with a small snort of laughter.

"..." Internally, Safi winced at the question; he remembered the joke that she was referencing, but he couldn't help but think of his own fiendish behavior of the recent past at Selene's kalona query. Some things were a little too close to home, joke or no joke.

Still, he managed a slight smile and a small head shake. "No...still a wind, sadly. I suppose that I'll just have to get used to not being disguised well. But what have you been doing since I last saw you?" Best to change the subject, thanks much.

She smiled. "Well... I had foals." her voice came across lamely. "It was decided it would be best if their father and I remained unmated. Other than that, nothing much. Still keeping up my daily schedule... bees not included. How about you?"

((Um, are the posts going to get longer than two sentences in the near future? I don't exactly know how to respond to posts that short sweatdrop ))

...Well, that was certainly unexpected; it wasn't often that someone casually dropped something like having foals into conversation like that and moved on. Naturally, Safi couldn't let that one slide. "Wow, congratulations! Seems like everyone is having kids these days." Smiling, he stepped back and elaborated a bit further. "My brother had kids not too long ago, you see, so I've gotten a bit of bonding time with my nephew."

Glancing around, he took note of the fact that there were no kids with Selene; she must not have been looking after them today. Oh well. Looking back at Selene, he gave her an understanding nod. "Well, sometimes things don't work out the way you'd expect. At least you and your foals' father were able to work things out. And I really haven't been up to much..." Mental breakdown, fights, and one night stands aside. "Sounds like you've been doing a lot more."

((sorry... sweatdrop I hit a... rut...))
She smiled. "Tell him congratulations!" her voice was cheerful. She smiled. "So what are they like? You said kids, so I guess there was more than one." she instinctively glanced around for Yue, though the filly didn't care to spend much time with her mother. Goodness, the filly was growing so fast, any day Selene expected her to grow taller than herself.

"And I suppose it was working it out. There wasn't much of an option, really. It was a... well..." she shrugged, not really wanting to go into all the sordid details of their relationship. After all, her one night stand had had consequences that she couldn't decide were disastrous, or a blessing...

Again, not that she didn't -love- her babies...

Yet at the same time... she wanted more.

The thought disturbed her, and she buried it deep. Really. She didn't need any more trouble!

((S'ok. Don't feel obligated to post if you don't really have something to post; I'm sorry if I was rushing you sweatdrop ))

What were they like? Good question, as he'd only met one. "Well, Kwahu -that would be my nephew- is a spunky little kid, very energetic, eager to please, and totally idolizes his uncle." Grinning, Safi raised his wings in self-deprecation; he'd had no idea that Kwahu would take such a shine to him! "I've never met Kwahu's sister, though; she lives with her mother, and I don't know where that is. Kwahu is a great kid, though."

So great a kid that Safi in one sense regretted the fact that Inali hadn't wound up pregant after their...encounter. Well, that would have created an ever more complicated situation from one that had been pretty bad to begin with so it must be for the best.

Shaking off the what-ifs, Safi gave Selene a bright smile. "So, what are your kids like?"

She smiled, sadly. "Chenhuang lives with his father... it just sort of ended up that way. I don't get to see him often. Something I regret, actually. He'd a beautiful little boy." she smiled. "He has my wings. Tiny little thing, and so very shy! As for my little girl, Yue Shuang, she takes more after me. She's got her father's wings, my muted colors. An adorable little horn. And she's fiesty. A lot of spirit."

But even Yue Shuang found it more fun to hang out with the colt-like Duo, or the serene Scherazade than her own temperamental mother. Something that had almost brought the mare to tears once or twice. Was she doomed to have a family that just... didn't want her? "I love them both so very much." she said firmly, and looking into her eyes, none could doubt the truth of that. "I remember when they were first born, they were so very, very small. But they are getting bigger every day. Yue will be as tall as me soon, I can tell. All limbs though still."

Nodding his head sympathetically, Safi felt as though he could commiserate. Even though they weren't his kids, he felt a strong bond with Kohana's children. Kwahu was such a fun colt, so full of energy and so determined to get things right! Safi wished he could meet his neice, but since Kohana and the foals' mother wasn't 'together', that didn't seem like a high probabilty. In a way, it was like Selene's problem...made all the more ridiculous by the fact he was missing someone else's child.

Still, that wasn't relevant to this, not really. As Selene described her kids, he found himself smiling fondly; they were so fun when they were young! "It sounds like they're both very handsome children, which is not to be wondered at when they got half their genes from you! And I suppose if your daughter is feisty, that must make for some fun playtime!" Just like with Kwahu. "Watching kids grow is a bittersweet experience, I have to agree...but isn't it amazing to see them 'come into themselves' as it were?"

As he spoke, Safi's face seemed very calm, very serene. It was strange to think, but this one tiny aspect of his life made him feel...well, important. Having someone looking up to him...it was something so foreign to his usual experience that he couldn't help but revel in it. Now, if only his brother could feel the same way.

Thinking of Kohana brought a rueful look to Safi's face, and he shook that idea off. Somethings were beyond control, no matter how much you might wish for them...

She smiled. "Well, aren't you a charmer." she made a teasing duck of the head, as if she were embarassed by him insinuating she was handsome. "And I enjoy the playtime. I tell you, it was quite the chore teaching Yue to fly... her wings don't quite work the same as mine... being different positioning and all that. Ahhh, for the good old days when I was young." she drifted for a moment, a small smile on her face. "And it is beautiful to watch them grow. To know it's a little part of you, and that they are always going to be bound to you."

Yue had told her just this morning that she hated her. That she wished someone less boring had been her mother. "Even if she grows up, and leaves me behind... she is my daughter." her voice was fierce. "My blood, and no one has the right to take that from me. Not even her."

She glanced up at Safi, flushing for real. "Don't you think that's true though? Be they niece, nephew, child? They are your blood... A part of you is in them, and will be in their children, and their children's children..." she raised an eyebrow at Safi.

He so seemed to love his nephew, she thought it would be a shame if he didn't see his niece.

Chuckling, Safi gave Selene a teasing wink, the seriousness of their little exchange tempered by Safi's usual silliness. "Well, I've been told that I have an eye for such things." Granted, he'd only heard that in jest, but that was simply because he wasn't the type that ran around and eyed mares all the time. However, that didn't bar him from being able to appreciate an attractive coat!

"Flight training...that was a fun experience, let me tell you." Selene's words almost made him burst out laughing, though for a slightly different reason. "Kwahu has wings, but neither of his parents do; I got to be the flight instructer almost by default." Well, he'd actually weaseled into that role; Kwahu had told him that his mother's sister was going to be his flight teacher, but there was no way Safi was going to relinquish such an important task to a stranger! Never mind that he himself was pretty strange. "Still, it really brought back memories of the old days when I was learning how to fly; spent more time crashing than flying, but such is the way we learn, right?"

Glancing at Selene, Safi cocked his head to one side as Selene suddenly spoke about her daughter, her voice intense. It was almost as though she were trying to convince herself. Something didn't seem totally right there...but he didn't know if it was a good idea to pry. After all, they didn't know each other THAT well...

But he certainly sympathized. Kwahu might not be his son, but nephew was still pretty darn good. "Indeed. Blood is strong, and love is even stronger. Combine the two, and you have what amounts to basically an unbreakable combination."
