This is (or will hopefully be) a discussion of certain aspects of fanfiction. This is not to say, it's meant to bash any kind of fic, just to discuss commonalities with them.
For example, one thing that greatly annoys me is the lack of creativity that comes with original character names. Ignoring the ones that are blatant pastiches of the author, and even bear his/her real or online name, some people just don't put forth the effort. I mean, how many fics are there where Duo has a sister named Duet or Trio? Seriously, it's just sad is all.
It would be nice to see people put forth more effort, even if it's not obvious...for example, I don't think anyone will get the joke/reference behind my fic saying that Heero's real name is Kiyomi Nakajima, but it's just more satisfying than popping out some generic name.

I have to agree * Claps* Finaly someone who has the same thoughts. I find that reading things such as the above said take away my intrest in whatever it is that I'm reading. Also, overused/overproduced simple names that you find in day to day reading like Kyo or John are turn offs. Creativity should be more indulged upon.
XiKeiyaZI Seig Arlion Haohmaru Kirumanzi
Just a few of the names in books that I am writing. I find myself very creative... but as Void said... creativity is something that seems to be lacking more and more.

Ahh, I see where you get that from. Ehehe, I assure you that I never even considered the names being compaired. Seig Arlion was born in an SRW Rp that we had for over a year called SRW: RE. Never meant to derive the name from anything else, perhaps I did it subconsiously?

I'm okay at coming up with names. In this guild's RPs I've got Gan Murasa and Norman Ark (love that name, Norman). Nothing spectacular, but they're still fairly original.
Indeed, though, creativity is lacking nowadays.

I admit that I have a few names I like recycling myself...some of my big ones include Shin Kensei, Ryuji Yamada, and Syuu Untensu.
I also wish people would write more fanfics that actually mesh with the series. Yeah, putting the boys in high school is cute, but what does it have to do with Gundam at all?

Well, the villain and his sister, the president, in my fic Benevolent Hearts are Colin and Lorelei Fortunato. Basically comes with what I'm reading or watching. Colin is the crippled boy from The Secret Garden. Fortunato is the name of that guy from Edgar Allan Poe's The Cask of Ammontillado. He's the dude who gets cemnted into a wall alive for being an alleged mason I think... Lorelei comes from the member of the Elite Four in Pokemon who likes Water and Ice since Pokemon Red Version brings back memories of my childhood. xd Names are a funny thing!

Names can indeed be fun. I don't suppose anyone cares, but here's my logic behind Heero's real name in my fanfic.
To begin with, you should know that there's a name theme running though most Gundam series. For the original, most of the White Base crew had names derived from WWII Japanese fighter planes. The most notable example is Amuro, whose name comes from the feared Mitsubishi A6M, also known as the Zero: Zero, in Japanese, is Rei (Ray), and Amuro comes from a rearrangement of A-Ro(ku)-Mu, which is how you pronounce A6M in Japanese.
So then we get to my story. Originally, I just sort of threw Heero's name together. I gave him the name Rei Nakajima, the first coming from zero, and the second being a reference to a video game I like.
But the other day, I was looking over Wikipedia, and I learned that Nakajima was also the name of a manufacturer of planes for Japan during WWII. Taking that as more than coincidence, I looked through their planes and noticed that they had one that was very similar to the Zero. I realized that the reference was too good to pass up, so I looked at the plane's model number: Ki-43. Going with the Japanese system of counting, we get Ki-Yon-Mi. Cutting out that N produced Kiyomi which, as it happens, is a real Japanese name.
And so there you have it. Kiyomi Nakajima for Heero's real name, and the entymology behind it.

Nice one Void... that just fell right into place, didn't it?
Cask of Amontillado, so you like Poe as well? Great author, and that's one of my favorite of his short stories. Pokemon references are also win, though I'd probably have used Sabrina - my favorite gym leader from Red (and Blue and Yellow) version, and also a pretty cool name
Oh, and I'm curious... which Pokemon did you choose as a starter? xp

I tend to use very ethnic names and/or names based on numbers as they do in the series xd I've had characters named Niente, Soixante, Mezzo, Viertien, etc. Naming the characters is a lot of fun!

Annabel Lee is favorite poem of mine and I enjoyed The Tell Tale Heart and The Pit and The Pendulum. Creepy... Killing a man because of an eye defect or escaping a horrid death with the aid of rats. Cask is my fave though since being buried in a wall is a particularly scary way to die... *cringes* As for Gym Leaders, got to love Misty and Erika. I like Agatha from the Elite Four too. Sabrina kicks a**! Her episode in the series wherein her inner child was encased in a doll. That was genius! My starter? Squirtle! If you pick Squirtle, Gary picks Bulbasaur so there's a bigger chance of winning your first battle. I also like Bulbasaur though but I steer away from Charmander. Hated the disobedient Charizard from the anime... wink

May I post a character bio and see if you think it is creative? I'm just really bored.
Name: Ileanna Niwaya age: 13 Race: human Hair: Orangish-red, put up in long pig tails with gold bows. eyes: Dark pink skin: pale weapons: kunai and shuriken abilities: Fire jutsu bio: Ileanna's father was part of the Uchiha clan, her mother part of another clan. She never knew her father as he did not stay with her mother. Her mother was sickly ever since she gave birth to Ileanna and by the time Ileanna turned 12 her mother was bed ridden. Upon her deathbed Ileanna's mother revealed to her the secret that she was part Uchiha. Ileanna decided to leave the small and relatively unheard of village of her birth when her mother died, in search of her father and other relatives. She taught herself alot along the way, including refining her control of the fire jutsu. Her journey led her to the Hidden Leaf Village where she learned that the Uchiha clan had been wiped out save for Itachi and Sasuke. Itachi's whereabouts were unknown, but Sasuke was attending the Ninja Academy. In order to meet the only blood relative she had left, Ileanna enrolled herself in the academy and sought out Sasuke's company.
Well what do you think?

I think it would be a massive disservice to lie, so please be prepared for some brutal honesty. I apologize if it hurts your feelings, but that's the truth for you.
That character sets off several warning lights in my head with just a cursory glance. First off, she's about two years younger than the rest of the Naruto cast; child progenies are always a bad sign. Secondly, Ileanna is absolutely NOT a Japanese name in any form or fashion, and therefore sticks out in the Naruto world like a sore thumb. Thirdly, she's not only related to a powerful bloodline, but quite specifically to a character who is quite popular among the fandom community *coughhoweverundeservinghemaybecough*. Lastly, it seems extremely strange that she would somehow completely miss out on the knowledge that the Uchiha clan was almost completely gone, seeing as she's related to them.
All in all, the character gives off a very strong vibe of being an author character, and 99% of the time those are insufferable, annoying, and completely ruin a potentially good story.
