I know this will be a touchy subject for at least one person here, and I ask that if you decide you want to be a part of this discussion to not go ballistic. If you can't keep your cool then please shut the ******** up.

This thread is not to debate the war in Iraq nor is it about Bush, keep that in mind.

I was talking with my supervisor about the military (she's an ex-marine) when I brought up how people are crying about our troops dying in Iraq and saying it's too dangerous for them to be over there. I can understand to a certain extent; people have family in the military and they don't want anything to happen to them. People seem to forget an important point though:

It is their job.

There is no draft. These people were not forced to enlist. They signed themselves up knowing full well that they would become property of the US government and that if war ever broke out they could very well be called to the front. Would you tell a cop not to do his job because it's too dangerous?

Next topic. One of my co-workers overheard our conversation and disagreed with me completely. He said that these people didn't sign up to fight (How someone can enlist in a branch of the military thinking that if war broke out they wouldn't be involved or have to fight is beyond me). He said that most of them just wanted money for school or something like that.

I guess he didn't understand the way it works or something. Yes, the military will help pay for college or even give you classes while you're in, but why? It seems fishy that they would give out money without asking something in return... Oh right, they do.

In order to get that money for your education you must work for it. You must train, follow orders and fight should the need arise.

He said that soldiers who join in peacetime should have a choice in fighting or not if a war were to break out. It doesn't work that way. If a person joins in peacetime they're taking the risk of a war breaking out before their service time is up. You want to bet on there not being a war that's fine, but if one breaks out you should be ready to pay up.

I say that if you're not prepared to fight you shouldn't enlist.

It doesn't matter what your view on the war is, these people are doing their jobs; it just so happens that they picked one where death is in the job description.

I agree.

So. I have nothing to say on -that-.

But I have a whole rant coming on about women in the military. Which I will spare you all, because I'm bound to piss someone off, and also; it's useless.

All I'm going to say is when women ask for equal rights, they should get exactly what they wanted. Equal. ********. Rights. Get out there and fight if you expect to have the same pay as a man. mad

Hee. I like you. I was talking to my mother about that the other day. Mostly about woman not being spared the draft. (I'm anti-draft, if you must know, but if you gotta go, you gotta go.)

You gotta stick your neck out to get the treatment you want. That doesn't mean I'm joining the military anytime soon. But, hey, it's a nice thought.
