Here I will describe a few ways to introduce yourself into a role playing thread.

Most threads, you can simply place a, 'how do I get in!' post, but please post this in OOC. You can do this by either placing OOC: How do I get in? Or you can also post it this way, (How do I get in?).

One great hint before you even post that, read the first few posts in the thread, most people make a post that tell people how to get in. It is also helpful for you to read the last few posts as well, for then you know what the rest of the rpers are doing.

If all else fails, you can also PM the person in charge of that story thread. you can easily find that person out, for it usually is the person that made the thread.

(Visitors Tip)
You can also do what i call an "Outside In" trick.

Most roleplays have either a very clear storyline or no storyline.
The "Outside In" trick is based on the same principal as discribed by Tesunie. If the players are involved in a heated battle, you "Happen" to be nearby and jumps in to either help, or just do what fits your character.
An example is at it's place:

RP'er:
"John rushed through the streets, the mob following him with scythes, tridents and torches. Beginning to get exhausted, he suddenly tripped and fell, and before he knew what happened, the mob had sorrounded him."

Me, the new player:
"Yoine saw the boy run through the streets. Being curious about what chased him, she looked a little behind him. A large mob of people with weapons of every kind were chasing the poor boy. Yoine looked back at the boy, whom fell. The mob sorrounded the poor boy, and eventhough not wanting to get in danger, Yoine jumped down from the roof on which she was sitting, and used her special power to chase off the mob"

I made some snap-off because of laziness. What i did in the first part of the response, was to tell the OTHER RP'er that i was watching him, so that he knows that i react to his actions. Don't be scared not to do anything about situations. Most people have a "backup-plan" so to say, if noone reacts.

As a side-note, i underscored som important details, that you can SURELY read more about in this forum.
Yoine does not know John, therefore, she did not see John, she saw "The boy".
Also, you do not have to repeat everything the previous RP'er said, just make sure that he knows that you react to his post.

(Sorry if i ruin your teachings Tesunie ^^' )

Agreed with Darkeydance. I don't mind the helping hand here, as long as you can present your information and advice in a reasonable way. I'm trying to make this a collective information area, where people can look into to find answers to questions without having to even ask. Not everyone reads it though... but I feel enough do.

I only have to disagree with one part of your example. As you don't know what the story is, and you don't know what the intent was for the crowd (within the story), I wouldn't have you be able to actually scare off the whole mob. Maybe stand beside the boy, using yourself as a shield, or maybe try to intimidate the mob to leave the boy alone. I know you provided a quick example which has many good points.
Basically, explain what your character does with a bit more detail. If you can cast illusions, maybe you could say you project the illusion that you turned into a giant dragon, breathing fire into the air to try and scare the crowd away. (I say this in this manner as if you read the auto-hit topic, you are not in control of the NPC (Non-player character) mob. You can't dictate what that mob can do unless you are in control of the role play or you made them.)

I also would recommend making sure your character is accepted before you would make a post, as not all characters can fit into all role play. If this was a technology world without magic, you being a mage character posting magic would be out of place. This, of course, also depends upon the role play. The more advanced the level of role play, the harder it usually is to get in. Basic role plays usually accept all characters, with maybe only a tweak or two for balance.
