Well? How was your first day of Marching Band...??
I just joined marching band last tuesday and yesterday was another rehersal, and it is scaring me already... Yes, I'm one of those stupid freshmen. On tuesday, after an hour and a half of showing off from our directors that we are the biggest and best in NJ, we went to practice some. Our band is quite.. no, not quite... it is HUMONGOUS! Yesterday, one of the directors says some bands are as big as our clarinet section, lol (30+). We have about 200+ marcherers... So when I walked in with the other woodwinds I was in awe and bewilderment! There were SO many people...! But then, I unpacked and sat down and next thing I know, I have people I knew a year or two ago sat right next to me. Though I was freaking out, .... cause they scared me a bit, lol. I'm a quiet shy person at first and like..I was confused.. We did soem playing, though I couldn't get any notes out with my saxophone cause 1 - my reed was broken and 2 - i haven't played alto in a while, cause I played bari last year. Yeah, so I was quite confused. In ended with kissing saxophones... eek question ... cause when I picked up my saxophone, it hit the kids next to me saxophone redface ! ... Quite embarrasing!!
Yesterday, they made us play already. O_O I knew like one scale out of like... 7. redface But the old alto saxophone players kept yelling out the notes we are supposed to play, so I was fine =) ... Though I am very bad at recognizign notes without using the 5 lines... neutral Yeah... And then we stood up, and I was... tired already after 5 mintues O_O" ... plus I locked my knees... FUN... gonk And then we went outside and they put us into lines, which was SO confusing and showed us a few drills. And then we started marching.. redface redface redface I was wearing Flip Flops... And I was ... VERY off beat. redface redface NEVER wearing Flip Flops again to MB!!! ... Lol...
Oh hey, does anyone else start this early? We just have a couple of practices now and then Band Camp at the end of August... I'm SO excited!!
Share your experiences wink
((I'm sorry if this is a repeat topic, but I haven't seen one of these yet))

Notes: -I can confidently say that w3 are the best in NJ, not j00. (Partial-Sarcasm there.) -Flipflops are a huge nono. -Saxes are the best and funniest of the band. Always and forever. -Freshmen have no rights. Learn that, it is your law until you learn Basics.
Now, my first experiences were a little disturbing. I was a wee child of 14, walking into the legendary Band Room for the first time as a student of the school, and it was an experience.
I sat in the wrong spot, grabbed the wrong music, honked out every note wrong, and said the wrong things to the wrong people.
Very surprised I didn't get killed that night.
Also, my friend, who has been known to speak her mind when she pleases and how she wants to word it. That night, she was completely silent and overcome with shyness.

I know for a fact my Band is the LARGEST in the U.S. and possibly the World. The ALLEN EAGLE ESCADRILLE! 600+ marching. we're going to the Rose Bowl this year. Also, look for us in the World Record Books soon.
My first marching experience. Well, I played the vibraphone in the pit, so not much. It was last Summer, 3rd week of July, 2 weeks to school starting. (Our entire Drumline meets 1 week before the whole band.) Lots of Push-ups, and prep talks from the wonderful, coolest guy, Mr. B. Mr. B can play a 32-note role like it was nothing. Yep, My first marching experience. Lots of Pep-tunes and the show music wasn't easy either.
But the Drumline, DEAD AS A DOORKNOB when the week was over, with a week to go.
Yep, That my life.

I'm not saying we are the best, it is just that our directors were bragging so much that we are so great and all for so long, lol. BTW, i'm in the South Brunswick Viking Band.. Yeah. I figured out that flip flops are awful the first step I took stare ... killed? Not even the seniors looked like they were gonna kill me rolleyes lol... though I did fell invisible... Yes... I was shy too, most probably red as a tomato once someone talked to me... lol. legobob5000: We do pushup in marching band?! .. ... ... *thinks for a while* ... ... why do I have the feeling it will be three hours of gym class everyday instead of marching now? neutral

lol i jus hadd my first day of Mb like 2 weeks ago.........even though im a sophmore.......transfered to a public school from a catholic school that doesnt have a MB .........I also play alto sax
ANyway the first day i went in a already knew most of the people that use to go to my middle school......we were in the band room......you know talkin being kinda loud......then the drum major tells everyone to stand except the new people.......so everyone stands still talking........the drum major then said........UNIT ATTENTION........complete and utter silence mrgreen ........i like sunk in my chair trying to not to laugh how they got so silent and into position so quick........UNIT PARADE REST........again perfectly into position.........UNIT ATEN-HUT......everyone then into that position and screams out hut. I then stopped laughing and all of the sudden very intimidated.......After that we broke up into sections to learn positions, warm-up, mark-time, and a song we had to memorize for the audition.
Day of Audition_ Extremely nervous......i went into the audition with this freshman trumpeter about two feet tall. All three of the conductors were at one side of the room and we were at the other. The first thing they told us to do was to play Bb concert scale. Palyed that good. THen he asked me to "Jazz" it up......confused i was like ok.......did it and then played it.........then was American Pride ((song we had to memorize))........did extremely well on that considering i had to memorize it an hour before my audition.......THen we did positions blah.....Then they commented on on how we did.........he said that i have "very good sound " and asked if i took lessons.........yea and i got in rofl
The audtion was for tottenville marching band which is number on in the state (NY) for the past two years.....so im jus happy i got in!^^

Share your experiences wink We're not having one until like August or maybe til school starts because our bd's getting married this summer to another bd whee so...no cheese days parade this year gonk Ah...a freshman...been there, done that. In fact that was last year. It's awful being a freshman but you'll get used to the name-calling. Huge band...hmmm...haven't got one of those and yeah our band's 30-50 people so about the size of your clarinet section if you can believe that rolleyes Freaking out is the natural way of being a freshman...upperclassmen are scary! eek Don't be surprised you were already playing...that happens a lot and scales...this year we went through the whole circle of fifths and my section like failed every single one... gonk xp My experience of marching band so far...I love it! It's the best thing that ever happened to me and when we do start...I hope we learn how to highstep!!!!

My first day of marching band was very, very hard to forget. In fact I'm still trying to forget it crying lol But We had a song called Soul Bossa Nova (the Austin Powers music) and basically we were playing the same rythem over and over. So two of our Seinor trumpets got up and started running around on our long rest. We got use to that but then next time 'round then got up and started hump dancing with each other eek The Freshman Trumpets literally dropped their trumpets on the ground . Everyone stared at us like we were idiots. What's worse is that at M.S.B.O.A. the wore thongs under their bibbers and you could see the outline. gonk *is still scared.*

Well, in comparison to last year... We're much more organized, and it kinda sucks. We have one freshman in our section, and I'm the Freshmore. I switched over from Mellophone to Baritone, and it's tough. But I'm liking it more than last year. Cept they're uber strict now.
We're a really reputable marching band, all the ones in the area know about us.
Well, our section, Baritones and Tubas, are making up a song and dance routine and we're wasting sectional time on it! LoL!
I got placed on the outside of the parade block, and i have to do this thing with my finger...I hate it! GAH! But, band is the best.

Hm... all the days of band camp last year are kinda meshing together when I recall specific days. All I remember from my first day was that I was really excited (Since I'm a loser like that) and then we kinda divided into sections and marched around...and didn't really have anything exciting happen. Except...I think I went to Geunardis with my friend and her brother and half the tuba section (yea, that's like three people) and I was falling all over everyone in the car because my friend's brother who was driving is a really poor driver.
Yea, but I heart marching band.

oh.. I can't wait till marching band starts... 8th grade band is in 11 days (June 28th) this will be fun... lotta new kids comin' in... gonna lay down some laws... I'm in 10th grade... I think I'm gonna be Drum Captain.. Percussion Leader, good stuff... although I'm not the oldest (we have a senior) I have been there the longest...plus I'm a little better... ^-^
first day of band camp... hmmm. oh yes, I was terrified... scary place ya know... umm. advice... well.... 9th graders shouldn't have that much of an attitude, but might seeing they now finally have power over someone.... 10th graders seem to be the most cocky... eh... never know... show up, and look like you love band and your instrument and that your ready to work... I think that most seniors and older people love nothing more than someone who's willing to work.... if you don't complain and do your best.. you should be ok.... (they like it because it's less work for them to whip you into shape) lol.... that's about it.... ^-^ I love marching BAND !!!!!!!!!! pirate

I'm a incoming Junior in high school and I have to say that my first day as a freshman it was pretty scary but the people were so awesome and plus the fact it was my first time ever playing the saxophone. But now I'm the section leader. If you work really hard, Band Camp is something you'll treasure forever because of the hot weather or maybe the push-ups and the playing. But you'll meet the best people in marching Band.... Good luck kid.
Saxophone Section leader..Miss littlebumblebee.
