Still very much reeling from the encounter with the two adult lions and the cub in the Pridelands, Schatz paced around in a circle atop an elephant skull. She'd learned fast that it proved to be an excelent vantage point, and she took advantage of this now as she paced. Her mind kept flickering to the cub, so full of fear at the hyenas. One day... Stoping, the juvenile scraped her claws across the skull, growling deeply. One day there would be a cub, and it wouldn't have a chance. One day...

Snorting at the general direction of the larger of the local lion prides, the young hyena climbed down the massive skull. She planned to one day get one, yes... And she'd bring its body and head to Mafa, prove her worth... She'd yet to hear of any of the others in the pack so much as maiming a lion, besides Mafa and Tibuka. Beyond that... Maim was as far as they got. Schatz planned to take it further. Black paws coming in contact with the stone ground, the bone-marked youth stretched out. No sense having a sore back later.

Mafa had taken to some actual duties lately, patroling the packlands herself instead of having everyone else do it. It was rather refreshing to say the least, quite a bit more interesting than hanging out in her den and hunting in the plains surrounding the graveyard. The large female sighed and walked slowly near the border of her lands. A small cloud of dust rose behind her as she dragged her feet. It hadn't rained in ages. Mafa's head tilted to the sky as she paused for a moment, icy eyes glaring up at the heavens for not sending down any life sustaining water in the past few months. Mafa was used to not living with much water, but this was getting ridiculous.

Reluctantly, the female moved on, lowering her eyes from the sky and leveling them at the horizion. She peered around before going any farther, checking this spot as clear, for now. It wasn't long before a scent lingering in the air caught her attention, as did the subtle movement of another. Her trained senses picked up on the disgusied signs of life rather quickly. Ears perking and hackles raising, Mafa crested a hill, coming up right behing the black and white quarry of her investigation.

Black ears twitching, Schatz stopped her stretching. Turning slowly, she found what she'd heard. A much larger hyena had come up behind her, one she aimed to please. Bowing, the juvenile kept her tail low. "Good evening, Alpha Mafa. Patrolling the territory for invading foes both hyena and lion alike?" Strong willed though she was, Schatz did not see herself as alpha material. Her coming strengths were best used, in her mind, in the service of another.

Mafa paused as she registered the aspect of her search to be someone she knew; Schatz, one of the newer recruits to the pack. Mafa took a moment to look the young female over. She was growing. Defintely had sprouted since Mafa had last seen the youth. Eyes glazing over slightly, she thought back to when the young female had first come in. There had been another with her, similar in appearance. Oh yes, the sister, tagging along with Rasuli she assumed. A new feeling reared up in Mafa's interior, jealousy, as slight as it was. Mafa grimmaced and quickly supressed it, refusing to think on the subject any more. Her attention dashed to Schatz,

"Indeed, and I suspect you are as well?"

Mafa paced a slow circle around the other, finally sitting down near her and flattening her ears in a satified manner. Schatz was coming along nicely indeed, the pack needed more individuals like her, Mafa decided, willing to bow at her sight. Now that was something she could live with.

"Tell me, how are you faring in the graveyard? Has it taken to your liking?"

The younger hyena's eyes darkened a bit. "I was, until hunger overtook me... But my meal, as it were..." She sneared a bit. "Got away." Actually, it was protected very fiercely. Sitting down, her ears flattened back only slightly. Her eyes were on her paws until Mafa spoke again, turning back up to watch the alpha. "I fare well. It is all I had hoped it would be and more." Her ears moved back up, delighted to think of this wonderous place she now called home. "Any hyena who doesn't want to live here should consider themselves unwelcome, for there is no place better."

As the young hyena spoke, Mafa nodded with a tilt of her head. Expected, to lose one's meal in the early stages of learning to hunt, especially around here, where there were more than enough ample hiding places. Schatz would simply need more practice in hunting in this barren wasteland. Mafa had mastered the skill, perfected every action, but then again, she had lived here since her birth; she expected no less from herself.

The young female spoke encouraging words. It was apparent to the alpha that she would fit into this pack excellently. Her ideals, her morals, her respect, everything about the juvinille was top notch, and Mafa knew she'd grow into an individual she'd be proud of.

"It is good to hear that you are enjoying our home; your home. you're fitting in well, Schatz, perhaps your next step will be to learn to fight... To kill."

Such wonderful words from the alpha! It made Schatz swell with pride to hear such praises. "My alpha, words fail me hearing such wonderful words from you!" She had to resist the urge to wag her tail, she was so pleased.

At that moment, though, her stoumach rumbled. "Ah... I appologise... I still require food." Her ears flattened a little as she glared at her belly, then rose up. "Perhaps there's something floating around here that's near enough death for me to pick off." Bowing her head, she smiled pleasantly at Mafa. "I bid you farewell, and many good hunts." With a flick of her tail, kept low to show she still knew her place in the pack, the juvenile practically pranced off to find food, the wonderful words still floating in her ears.

Mafa nodded wisely, only her eyes showed her pride in the young hyena, though it was a sign that just about everyone who wasn't looking for it missed. Schatz was different from the rest of the pack, and different in a good way, that was for sure. She didn't offer resistance to Mafa's will and words, she complied completely, and that made Mafa quite content.

The alpha's ears perked as the female's stomach gurgled in hunger. Mafa fought the urge to chuckle. Schatz was still young and growing, she needed abundant nutrition to grow to her fullest. Mafa, now an adult, had grown used to living on an empty stomach, and for now, she was ok with that. With a nod of her head signifying a gesture of good bye, Mafa bid off the young female.

"Same to you Schatz, come visit again if any revelations come about."
