Early hints of sunlight awakened the mare to the crisp morning air, frosty and chilled as it was nearing the time of cold. She struggled to lift herself off the ground, her belly laden with what seemed at the time like deadweight. She took extra caution to not let anything touch her belly, as it was heavy with life. Her head turned towards the sunlight, blinking tiredly; she had gotten increasingly exhausted with each passing day. With the increase in fatigue came her increase in size. It seemed like yesterday, when she was normal, however...

It had been some time since her stomach was full with prospective life. She did not know when the life begun--she did not have enough energy and will to figure it out. A half-annoyed grunt emitted as the mare wondered of the sire's whereabouts. She did not dare fly out to search for him, fearful of dangers posed to her belly, given the extra weight and burden. She had been grounded, though that did not matter much to her. The only times she needed to move about was for food or water, or for mere walking pleasure if her stomach started to get uncomfortable in its position.

The mare sluggishly marched to the edge of the river, craving for water. Or perhaps it was her unborn foals' craving, though she did not care to dwell upon the fact that now she needed to provide sustenance for others in addition to herself.

Emerald eyes were fixated upon the splash of color that ever so slowly moved it's way across the watertop. Trickling back and forth, attempting to control it's fate within the liquid, the little amber colored leaf tried to hold it's own. A small smirk grew it's way upon his maw, and he shrugged to himself. He may as well follow, even though he had seen the fate of it's brothers and sisters from days prior. Hooves that were previously laden with mud were now somewhat pristine, swishing their way through the water, attempting to balance carefully upon the slippery rocks. Moss tried in vain to cling to such slick surfaces, only to be rushed along with the hurried beat of the river.

The everwarming rays of the sun delved and pushed their way through the clouds which adorned the sky. Penetrating downwards, they began to bring a comforting glow to the surrounding land. The feeling of warmth began to sink into his skin, quickly and openly absorbed by his darkly colored pelt. His mind began to wander, traveling to a time where life seemed even more simple. When he was a small colt, making his way around the world. The river had such deep ties with him and his life, it was the place where he could sincerely call home.

As he moved his way along, he was rather impressed by the journey of the amber leaf. But, of course, he knew that it would be short-lived. Soon enough he would become distracted by the scent of something.. familiar ... In the back of his mind, he knew exactly what it was, but his nostrils flared with the sting of curiosity. Ears perking upwards, he climbed his way farther along the river, actually passing the leaf by this time. Eyes narrowing, he peered forward .. and what did he see..? It was Maize ... but she was .. different.. her scent was different. He winced, his pace much slower now.. His mind raced with the possibilities.. No.. Could it really be?

Distracted by the soothing refreshment the water provided, Maize did not take notice of the awaiting presence nearby. She indulged the water in gluttonous delight, suddenly thirsty enough to drink an entire ocean. An excited nudge within her stomach broke her trance, and she lowered her head to speak with the disruption.

"Had enough now, had we?" She smiled and turned upright again, standing tall and proud in the sun. She had always wondered what it would be like being a mother. She, unlike her own mother, would stay and make sure her foals got the attention they needed. She would stay. The feeling of maternal pride coursed within her veins, and she almost teared at the thought of her future foals... and family. "Life changes quickly, and suddenly. If only Dyre were here now..."

At that, her ears pricked, more conscious of the surroundings. "Something's coming..." she murmured, turning around so that her back was to the river. Whatever it was, she was not going to allow it to harm her future offspring. Head darted and eyes scanned in vain, the mare slow to perceive who was coming in her direction.

Usually the shadows are on Dyre's side. He was known for being able to travel softly, quickly, and almost undetected. But today there was something different, definately a change could be felt within the morning air. His mind was racing with possibilities, even though he knew in his heart what had happened. He should have been floating upon air, although his hooves struggled to move their way smoothly across the rubbled floor.

A few light clicks and clacks emitted from the ground, announcing his presence to whomever was in the close vicinity. His gaze and his path would not be broken, he needed to speak with her, he needed to embrace her. He needed to protect her and whatever was to come within their lives now.

"Maize..." He spoke in the most soft, comforting voice. His sounds emitted low within his throat, and his eyes began to close in somewhat of a dreamy daze. That pace slowed somewhat, as he came nearer. "It's me..." He smiled as the entire world seemed to fall within a blur. Nothing else mattered than the moment that he was sharing with her, and the conversation that was about to ensue.

It was almost surreal, as if the inner workings of miracles were being presented. Maize could not help but stare in utter disbelief. When was the last time she had seen him?! Where had he been?! Instinctively, her hooves started to move forwards to greet Dyre's. The wind seemed to forcefully move through her hair, allowing it to blow behind her elegantly, and it was as if this one moment was meant to be.

"Dyre!" she called with fervent joy. "Where have you... You're here." She was overwhelmed. Something within her mind told her that it was a dream, but yet, it was so realistic. A fluttery feeling built up inside her as her heart swelled with love and adoration for the stallion in front of her. "It's been too long..."

A bubble slowly swallowed up the ground surrounding the two, and to Maize, nothing else mattered--not the water, not the trees, not the sun. The only thing that was immediately present, save for the ground that seemed to fall from underneath her, was Dyre. And she made haste to embrace him, tears of pure bliss welling up in her brown and purple eyes.

Dyre's eyes glistened at the sight of his beautiful, glowing Maize. The air around her certianly had changed, she seemed to have much on her mind. He let his eyes fully close as he moved forward, lifting his head up slightly so that his neck could press against her own. He rested his chin upon her back, slowly nuzzling his cheek lovingly against her. Lowering his head slightly, he lifted his ear, attempting to hear her heartbeat along with every breath that she took. The innerworkings of her sounded amazing.

"How do you feel...?" He whispered softly, but loud enough for her to hear. The embrace was so warm against the cold chill of the morning wind, and he hoped that perhaps the sun could aid in slicing the frigid breeze for Maize. His tail flickered behind him, which only seemed to happen as a result from happiness.

"Tell me.. When did you find out?" The actual situation didn't have to be spoken, it was apparent as to what he was referring to. His nose accidentally brushed against a few feathers from her wings, and his eyes immediately opened. Nostrils wrinkled, and he tilted his head, trying hard to avoid a sneeze which might ruin the gentleness of the moment.

Maize cuddled against Dyre affectionately, desiring every moment to be in the same position - in his warmth. Her eyelids let down as well, savoring the sweet moment they were reunited. And yet, the moment ended too soon for Maize--another one would come sooner, she hoped. At least, if everything went along according to her, there would be another lifetime of embracing moments like this. As Dyre brought his head low to her stomach, she felt a couple emerging kicks, vibrant with life. She let out a soft, inaudible grunt, the movement tickling her. Perhaps the foals already identified with their father.

"I am perfect, with you here with me now," she replied, pushing her head lightly underneath Dyre's. The heat she felt emitting from him felt all too comfortable, so she stayed in the position, unmoving. She could feel her body warming up already in the stallion's presence.

"It was quite a bit of time ago," she solemnly said, her mind whizzing back in time. She herself did not know--what she did know was that if given the chance, she would not have taken back the chance of motherhood. She was positive she was in a state she enjoyed being in... although she did feel a tad embarrassed by the amount of weight she seemed to gain overnight. "But wait--Dyre! Where have you been? You've been missing--I've missed you for a while, I did not know if... If you were going to... I wasn't sure when you were coming back." She looked downwards, holding her tongue, regretting what had just come out of her mouth. It was her fear for what had happened to her father many seasons past coming to life again. And she had promised that she wouldn't associate her mother with Dyre--the two were just too different from each other!

"I'm sorry, Dyre," she said quietly, a guilt urging her to back away. However, once she noticed the symptoms of her feather tickling Dyre's nose, she could not help but simper and put her nose up to his, attempting to deter the oncoming sneeze.
