okay so i decided to sit down and write a song one day. i got all of the lyrics and was very satisfied with it. however, when i went to try and play something to go with it on my guitar, i was completely braindead. i thought the lyrics would be the harder part, but obviously not for me. anybody got any advice on how to make music to go along with your lyrics? (i mean like tips or tricks)

I find it much better to write the music first, and then write the lyrics to the song, fitting the lyrics in the spaces of the song. It's hard to do at first, but you get used to it, and eventually, you start to find really imaginative places for lyrics. wink

Well sometimes I write words then guitar but other times I write the guitar then the words! Depends on what sort of mood I'm in. For example sometimes I'm just messing about on my acoustic and come up with a cool little chord sequence, so I write it down.
Guitar=Done! mrgreen
Then if I'm in the mood to write lyrics and/or I've got a melody in my head I'll get some more ideas down onto paper.
Lyrics=Done! mrgreen
Then all it takes is a bit of tweaking here and there and you've got yourself a song. But sometimes I write the words first, in which case I do it the other way round. So I'll write down the words, then figure out which chords go well underneath them (I usually have a melody in my head when I write lyrics...).
Don't try to make the guitar too flashy, especially if you're new to writing songs. Just come up with a simple chord pattern that you can sing on top of. Then when you're happy with the song but you still feel like the guitar could be better, change it to whichever style you want it to be. So if you're a metal head change the guitar so it's a ball breaking riff-a-thon (still in that chord sequence), or if you play blues just add a load of improvised fills every half bar.
Then after the first 50 or so songs are done it gets easy! blaugh

Ugh, I'm never satisfied with my lyrics... >.< That's why it's so hard for me to write them... At least you have an easier time with them...
But yeah, music first, then lyrics. But even then I'm picky with the music too. *sigh* Songwriting's frustrating for me, yep. But yeah, you should make the music before writing the lyrics... Sometimes it's nice to do the otherway around but it's only if you know exactly what you want.

when we write songs (we being the band) we get all of our lyrics done first, never in any specific order, just a big ******** of lyrics, next get your tune for it, rifts whatever you please, and then play your rift and fit the lyrics into each verse, if you can't get a full line into one verse (however long your verse is) don't sweat it just stick it into the next one. And if you need to get rid of something or make an odd number a verses in whatever part of the song your in, go ahead! mrgreen

i dont write alot of songs myself, but you might want to record your singing and a few different melodies and then put them on your computer or something, and see if any of them go together well. i didnt try this yet, but i think it should work well since when you play your guitar and sing at the same time, its hard to concentrate on what it sounds like, especially since the guitar overpowers your voice
