Chapter 1- The beginning

"This wasn't supposed to happen this way..."

That was what little Kiyone Uchiha thought after the massacre, her cousin,
Itachi, being the man behind it all. She couldn't believe it. Before being slain, Fugaku and Mikoto Uchiha told her to run. Looking back at that moment now gave her the shivers.

-Flashback to a day ago-

Kiyone was coming home from the acadamy, with a smile to her face.
She greeted the police force, greeted her relatives, and went into the Uchiha compound. She helped with Mikoto doing chores around the house.
She saw Sasuke earlier at shuriken practice, but he knew he could handle himself. Kiyone knew that Sasuke was determined to catch up to Itachi.
Speaking of Itachi, she hasn't seen him lately. Where did her cousin go off to?

When Kiyone was fast asleep, she felt that something shook her.

"Kiyone...Kiyone wake up!"

The sound of Mikoto voice woke her up. Kiyone looked at her and saw Fugaku with her. She looked at them with eyes.

"Fugaku-sama? Mikoto-sama? What is going on?" she asked "Did I do something wrong?"

Mikoto smiled at her sweetly.
"No, dear. You haven't done anything wrong." she answered

"Well, what is it?"

Lots of screaming was going on outside. That was about all that Kiyone could here.

"Kiyone, we fear that something might be wrong. And Mikoto and I are prepared for what might happen," Fugaku stated
"But we can't let young children like you around here. Run and look for shelter"

"But why?" Kiyone asked "I do not understand!"

Mikoto and Fugaku both looked at her with kindness but also very serious.
Then, the door was opened. A shadow of a man was in the door. He looked
evil in the shadows, almost with the will to kill.

Mikoto quickly opened the window.

"Kiyone, run!" she screamed

Kiyone, went through the window and ran out the door, as fast as she could. She looked back once at the Uchiha compound, hoping that Fugaku and Mikoto were alright.

-end flashback-

Kiyone sat beside a tree after that, finding out a day later that Fugaku, Mikoto, and the rest of the Uchiha clan has been massacred. She also found out that her own cousin, Itachi, did it all.

"I don't believe it..." she thought "I knew Itachi-san was slowly changing,
but not like this! What caused him to do this?!"

While thinking about why Itachi did that, she can't imagine about what Sasuke was going through right now. It's must be tough on a seven year old, seeing your whole clan murdered. four years his senior (11 years old),
Kiyone felt that the least she could do is comfort him in his time of need.


Sasuke was sitting near the lake where he learned the fire ball jutsu and showed his father. Kiyone finally found Sasuke and went over to him.

"Sasuke-kun? How are you feeling right now?"

Sasuke turned around to see Kiyone behind him.

"K...Kiyone?! You're alive!" he smiled, but only for a second.

"I will make Itachi pay for what he did to Mother and Father. He will pay..."

But then, Sasuke broke down in tears

"I still can't believe it. They're gone. Mother, Father, Auntie...everyone. All killed by my own brother."

Kiyone hugged Sasuke to comfort him, then said;

"Sasuke-kun, what did he do? Did Itachi even say anything?"

Sasuke looked at her with watery eyes.

" He said... 'Foolish little brother. if you wish to kill me, hate me, detest me, and survive in an unsightly way. Run, run and cling to life. And someday, you will have the same eyes as me'. That's all he said. But those images I saw..."

Sasuke couldn't go on after that. Kiyone took care of him for this day forward to protect him. Angered about what Itachi said, she did feel a great need for revenge to kill him, but not as bad as Sasuke. Unlike Sasuke, she felt that she needed to let her lust for revenge go before it gets out of hand. Then, about five years later, Sasuke was finally put into a squad.

((I don't think I got Itachi famous line exactly right, but hey, I tried my best 3nodding ))

Chapter 3: Hayate vs Kiyone

After Sasuke went off to his squad, Kiyone went to hers in the forest with
her squad. Her teamates were named Hayate and Lei. She was the only girl, and most powerful of the three. Naturally, Hayate can't stand losing to anyone, espeacially a girl, and Kiyone was the first of the squad to become chuunin, before the others went up to chuunin as well. One day, Hayate challenged her.

"Hey, Kiyone" he said

"What is it now, Hayate?" Kiyone answered

"You know what, I am sick and tired of you being one step ahead of me! I'm older, more prettier, and smart, and yet you, a girl and a Uchiha none the less, is better than me at everything!

"Not this again..." Kiyone groaned "Look Hayate, if you really want to fight me, why don't you just say so? Instead of talking about it, just try and do it!"

Lei, who is the mostly the worrywart of the group, tries to stop the two.

"Both of you cut it out! We're gonna be late if we don't hurry up. Hayate, put your rivalry to Kiyone a rest already! Everytime you challenge her, you always lose! Get over it!" he said

"Try, try again, Lei, try try again. I won't be beat by Kiyone again, see? This time I'm prepared!" said Hayate

Hayate lunged at Kiyone to try and punch her, but Kiyone simply just sidestepped out of the way, making Hayate bump into a tree. Hayate got up, and does a series of kicks to attack Kiyone. Using her Sharingan, Kiyone, dodged all the kicks and kicked Hayate with a high kick.

"See Hayate," said Lei "You lost again"

"Shut up, Lei," Hayate said, turning to Kiyone "I hate it when you use your sharingan againist me."

"We're going to be late for sensei's meeting, Hayate, quit fooling around."
Kiyone finally said and walked off.

"Wait up, Kiyone!" said Lei "C'mon, Hayate!"

"Get back here!" said Hayate

Hayate ran and tried to punch Kiyone while she had her back turned, which was a pretty dirty move. Kiyone side-stepped again, making Hayate bump into another tree. After a few attck attempts failed, Hayate finally accepted defeat, for now.

Chapter 5: Watched by nightfall, returned by the enemy!

"Are you alright, Kaito-sensei?" said Kiyone, picking him up after Lei untied him

"Yeah, I'm alright," said Kaito-sensei "I don't know how long I was going to be tied up, but I can't say much about that guy. He had a mask, no ninja headband, nothing. I don't know what he's after, but you three better be on your guard."

Hayate got up with a smirk on his face.

"Well, it's good to see you up and alright sensei! Just you watch, when that guy comes back again, it doesn't matter if he had a army of ninjas. I'll beat them all!" he said

Kiyone and Lei were already up the hole, with Kaito-sensei

"Hey, if you stop doing your speech, Hayate, why don't you come help us getting Kaito-sensei to a hospital to see if he's okay?" said Kiyone

"Okay, okay. Stop breathing down my neck, Kiyone." said Hayate, climbing out of the hole

Everyone went to the rain village and went to the hospital. With a day nearly passing by, they were hoping that Kaito-sensei was alright. He suffered multiple kunai wounds on his leg all the waay up to his chest, so it was going to take some time for him to recover. Meanwhile, Lei and Hayate were training with each other, while Kiyone stood and watched them.

Lei disappeared behind Hayate and hit him in the head to try and knock him out.

"Come on, Hayate. I know you're a good taijutsu artist. But you let yourself go in the open too easily." said Lei

"Oh yeah?! Well, let's see you try it again, Lei! You have a weak body anyways!" said Hayate

Hayate charged at Lei and jumped up to do a high kick, but Lei caught Hayate's foot in midair, making Hayate fall down into the ground

"Weak body I might have, But quick reflexes to counter any attack." said Lei

While watching, Kiyone was lost in her own thoughts, about how she used train with Fugaku and Itachi back when the Uchiha Clan was alive. she shook her head a few times but then she started daydreaming about those days.



*flashback*

Kiyone is training with Fugaku in the Uchiha Estate. Both have their sharingan activated. Fugaku is able to intecept Kiyone's attacks and kick her into the ground. Fugaku sighed.

"Just as I thought, you are not like your cousin, Itachi. He mastered his training at the-"

"At the age of 8, passed the chuunin exams at the age of 10, and became the ANBU Captain at the age of 13. I've heard the story about a million times, Fugaku-sama, and I'm sick of it. Not everyone in the Uchiha clan is like Itachi! I want to be my own person, not like Itachi or anyone else!"

Fugaku shakes his head

"If we are to remain one of Konoha's elite clans, we must be as strong as Itachi, now. I'm done training with you child. Get out of my sight."

Kiyone, furious, slams the door behind her.

Kiyone is training in the forest with shuriken in her hand. She has targets all around the tree. She jumps in the air throwing the shuriken. Almost all of the shuriken hits all of the targets.

"Looks like you are able to hit all the targets around you, huh, Kiyone?" says a voice behind her

Kiyone turns around to see Itachi behind her, with a little smirk on his face.

"I-Itachi! How long were you standing there?!"

"Long enough to see you practicing here. I was about to train here for a while, but I'll do it later." said Itachi "I heard your argument with Father."

Kiyone stands there, embaressed.

"I'm sorry if I offended you in any way, Itachi, but I really don't want to be like you. That's just like using you as an excuse for me being part of the srong Uchiha. I don't to make a name for myself by using your skill, Itachi. I just want to be me, Uchiha Kiyone, not like Uchiha Itachi, Uchiha Fugaku or anyone else."

Itachi's lips curved into a small smile

"You'll get there." he said

*end flashback*



Kiyone clenched her fists after that flashback, think about that and the massacre, but then something grabbed her from behind. It was the man at the hole, with a kunai to the neck

"Ku ku ku, I told you I'd be back." he said

Kiyone let go of the man's grip, and had her kunai up to his neck, with a smirk on her face.

"Don't you know that it's rude to sneak up on someone?" she said

"Ah, and I see that you are very alert as well as skilled. No matter." said the man, holding up an umbrella "I'll finish you off! Here and Now!"

"Enough! You are a disgrace to the organization! We're leaving!" said a man from the trees!

Both men disappeared in a cloud of smoke. Kiyone, nor her teamates, didn't know what was going on. After three days, Kaito-sensei's wounds were nearly healed 100%, and so, the squad took off for Konoha.

Chapter 7: Trouble of the Chunnin Exams

Kiyone soon heard that Team 7 was competing in the chuunin exams. Her squad got a few jobs as well. Lei was an examiner in the first exam. Kiyone and Hayate were examiners of the second exam. While Kiyone was doing paperwork, there was a report of three lifeless bodies near the forest of death.

"Well, that's unfortunate. Guess we have to bury them." she said

As she was walking by, Kiyone accidently overheard a conversation between two examiners.

"Yeah, it was brutal man. Those three grass ninja..."

"And the bodies...I shiver at the thought. That poor guy's face melted off!"

Kiyone gasped at the thought. Then shook her head.

"W..what the heck? That's a frightning thought...I better get back with Hayate, to see if he alright. Knowing him, he's probably hyped up by now..."

Hayate ran to Kiyone, his face nearly white.

"K..Kiyone...so scary...the face...the face!"

Kiyone sighed and patted her friend on the back.

"Wow, Hayate, I've never seen you so scared before..."

"S...shut up!! I wasn't scared! I....w..was just..."

"Uh huh, sure." she said.

Kiyone, Hayate, and Lei were summoned by Kaito-sensei and the other examiners.

"As you already know, three grass ninja were killed near the forest of death, and one of the shinobi had his face melted from his skin. Kaito, you and your team have to investigate if something is suspicious in the Chuunin Exams."

"Understood, we will go." said Kaito

Team Kaito reappeared near the gate of the forest of death. Kiyone and Lei waited for the next order, while Hayate was still shaking.

"Come on, Hayate. You're not scared are you?" said Kiyone

"Will you stop breathing down my neck? I'm not scared, alright?" said Hayate

"Then why are are clinging to my arm?" said Lei

Hayate let go of Lei's arm out of embarresment.

"Not scared huh?" said Kiyone

"We'll split into three. Hayate, search east, Lei, search south, Kiyone, search west, and I will search north. Everyone meets here, in this spot."

Kaito threw a kunai into the ground, to indicate their spot of where to meet up.

"No sweat." said Kiyone

"Got it!" said Lei

All four went into their direction. Hayate moved east, Lei moved south, Kaito moved north, and Kiyone moved west.

As Lei moved south, he saw nothing unusual. He looked in the trees, on ground. Nothing.

"Nothing on my end." he said on his radio

"None by me either...I hope that Hayate and Kiyone are having better luck than we are." said Kaito

Hayate cautiously kept going east. Looking around, he saw nothing. Taking a sigh of relief for a brief moment. But as he tried to push the button, a giant snake was looking straight at him.

"Uh...guys? A little help...?" he said

Chapter 8: Suspicion of the Sand

Kiyone stopped at the sound of Hayate's cry for help.

"Hayate got himself in trouble, but I'll rescue him." she said to herself
"That numskull! Too hasty for his own good I say."

Kiyone went east to rescue Hayate, until she was attacked by a sand shuriken. She looked and saw a squad of sand shinobi.

"Give us your scroll!" said one ninja

"Relax, I'm an examiner." said Kiyone

"Oh really, sorry for the trouble. Let's go, Taiyou." said the ninja's teammate.

Kiyone looked as the sand shinobi disappeared to continue the second exam, then shrugged.

"I'll have to be careful. Some shinobi will confuse me for another ninja participating."

Kiyone kept going east, until she dodged a rainstorm of senbon. She saw a squad of shinobi from the rain village.

"Drop the scroll and walk away." said the leader

"I'm an examiner, I'm just looking for anything suspicious." said Kiyone

"Sorry for the mix up. Let's split and find someone else, Kanpa." said a teammate.

Kiyone went east once again, and saw a huge snake and a white looking Hayate across from it.

"Hey, Hayate. Need help?"

"Kiyone? Oh thank god!" said Hayate, then shook his head "...I could've handled it..."

"Relax, I got your back."

Kiyone jumped in the air and did handsigns
"Katon: Goukakyuu no Jutsu! (Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique"

Kiyone released a stream of fire on the snake to make it go away. But only it's skin molted. The snake stared at both Hayate and Kiyone and opened it's mouth. Both of them moved out of the way.

"Alright, I got this!" said Hayate as he jumped in the air toward the snake.

"Konoha Senpuu! (Leaf Whirlwind)"

Hayate kicked the snake, making it back up a bit and slither away. Kiyone jumped into the ground to see if Hayate was okay.

"Looks like you didn't need my help after all, Hayate." said Kiyone "Anyway, you all right?"

"Yeah, for now..."

As Hayate got himself up, another sand squad was in front of him and Kiyone.

"No need to attack, we're examiners." said Kiyone

The sand squad laughed evily and glared.

"We're not in the exams." said the ninja with a veil "Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Ensho. Too bad you won't see the destruction about to happen to this village..."


"What?!" said Hayate

"Suna Shuriken! (Sand Shuriken)"

Ensho aimed a barrage of sand shuriken at Hayate and Kiyone.

"Doton: Doryuu Heki! (Earth Style: Earth Style Wall)"

Hayate made a mud wall to protect Kiyone and himself againist the shuriken, which left Kiyone to attack.

"Katon: Housenka no Jutsu! (Fire Style: Mythical Fire Phoenix Technique)"

Kiyone aimed her attack on the defenseless squad. Two of the ninja, including Ensho, dodged the attack. The thrid got hit and got minor burns.

"Why are you here?" Kiyone demanded

"To ensure out mission, of course..." said Ensho "Sumire, let's regroup. Make our escape."

"Understood!" said Sumire, the kunochi with two knives on the side of her legs. "Ninpo: Doku Kiri! (Ninja Art: Poison Mist)

Sumire made a poison mist to ensure her team's escape. Hayate and Kiyone covered their mouths to avoid inhailing the mist.

"They got away!" said Hayate

"We probably should regroup too." said Kiyone. She activated her radio and made contact with Kaito.

"Kaito-sensei. Contact Lei and tell him we found someone suspicious. Hayate and I will explain everything."

"Understood, we're making our way back now." said Kaito

Kiyone and Hayate disappeared back to the front gate where the kunai stood.

Chapter 10: Frustration and Confusion

A day after the second exam was over, Kiyone went over to check the results of the teams who made. The prelimerary rounds were already going under way. She wasn't able to make it, due to all the paperwork she had to do as an examiner. Looking at the chart, Kiyone saw Sasuke's name among those who made it.

"Alright! Sasuke made it! I knew that..."

The minute she said that, another examiner went up to her.

"Hey, you with the purple hair. You know the Uchiha kid?" he said

"Of course I do! He's my little cousin, and the only family I have left!" she answered.

"Well, sorry to break it to ya, but Uchiha Sasuke has been hospitalized for some time after his fight in the preliminaries."

A jolt of pain went throug Kiyone's heart as he said that. She couldn't lose Sasuke too.

"Where is he? Where is Sasuke being treated?" she demanded

"At the hospital. But you can't..."

Kiyone was already gone as the examiner tried to explain. She hurried to the hospital, running as fast as she could. She had to know, if he was going to be okay or not. Bumping into a few people on the way, Kiyone finally made and made the doors fly open. Panting, she went to the receptionist's counter.

"I'm here...to see...Uchiha Sasuke," she panted "I'm his..."

"I'm sorry, but we can't allow visitors to see him." said the nurse

"WHAT?! Do you know how long it took me to get here to see him. I need to see if he's alright!" Kiyone cried

The nurse was a little intimidated at Kiyone's outburst.

"I'm...m sorry Ms, b-but we can't..."

"Why the hell not?! Is it that serious?!"

Luckily, Hayate was there in the hospital, doing some volunteer work as part of his mission. He wanted to laugh, but even he can't be too mean to Kiyone, so he just touch her shoulder and held her back.

"Hey, chill Kiyone, will ya? Usually you're so calm and relaxed." he said

"Let me go, Hayate! Let me go I say!" she cried

Poor Hayate had to drag to frustrated, purple-haired Uchiha out to the room to cool down before some kind of riot starts. Lei was waiting near the fence, he was surprised at what he saw too.

"Kiyone, I never thought you would put such a uproar." he said simply

Kiyone was nearly put into tears. She didn't cry, just teary-eyed. Still being held by Hayate, Kiyone titled her head down.

"I'n sorry, I just...I just can't lose Sasuke! I've already lost my clan by the hands of my older cousin! I want to revive the Uchiha clan! Sasuke and I promised on that! He can't just...die before then..." she said sadly, putting her hands on her face.

Hayate held Kiyone into a hug to comfort her a bit. He was even sweet enough to pat her on the head a little. Lei was partly happy, but he really want to laugh at Hayate's reaction.

"Lei better not say anything..." Hayate thought

"Well, this is even more unexpected from you Hayate! Of all people, you comfort Kiyone?" said Lei, a little humor in his voice.

"Shut up, Lei. Can't I show my graditude?" said Hayate

"Of course, but you? I never seen you do this before..."

"Well, ya do now! I say, we go to Ichiraku Ramen to calm our friend down. I think I got something that she wants to hear."

Hayate slowly helped Kiyone up her feet, and the sqaud walked together to the ramen stand, with Hayate explaining what he heard.

"I heard some freaky stuff about the exams lately. First off there's Sasuke. People keep saying there's a mark on his neck. From what I've heard, it's a curse mark."

"A...curse mark?!" Lei cried :I've only learned about that in books! I didn't think it was real. The only person who can plant such a thing on a person is..."

Hayate covered Lei's mouth to keep him quiet. He saw this upseted Kiyone even more.

"But hey, Kiyone don't sweat it. Your kid cousin's going to be fine. Sure, there ANBU Black ops guarding his room, but the doc says that he'll recover."

Kiyone nodded in agreement.

"And a month is a long time, after all." said Lei

"Hey, we're here!" siad Hayate as he saw the ramen stand
"Hey! Old Man! Give us three bowls! I'm starving!"

((Yeah, it takes me time to think for ideas))

Chapter 11: Escort to the Cloud

Kiyone woke up in her bed by the cracks of sunlight shining though her window. Yesterday was her little episode at the hospital, and she really wanted to shake that off. Lei said that the sqaud had an escort mission today, so she got dressed and went to the meeting spot. Kaito had two people with him, older man, probably Kaito-sensei's age, and a young girl, say 12 or so.

"Everyone, this is my friend, Toya. The young girl is his apprentice, Sakuya. There are both from the Cloud Village. Our mission is to escort them safely to their village." said Kaito

"Safely? Why? Is someone after them?" Lei asked

"Something like that. We've bumped into a few rouge ninja on the way here," siad Toya "Most likely they'll come around for us. So, I went up to the big office, and my friend here accepted the mission. I know you kids are excited about seeing the chuunin exams, but I promised you'll get back in time."

"Sure, no problem, Toya-san. We'll get there." said Kiyone, finally speaking up.

"So, why the heck are we standing around here. You want to see your kid cousin compete, right Kiyone? The faster we do this, the faster we can get back in time, so let's move out!" said Hayate

Everyone went to the gate of the village and set out for the Village Hidden in the Clouds. Everyone went at high speeds, and even rested a little until they found a spot to rest for the night.

"I've just noticed," said Lei, while cooking dinner. "That girl Sakuya hasn't said anything yet. Not even a word to us."

"That girl, Sakuya. She's just extremely quiet and doesn't like talking to people much. It's always been that way, even since I took her in as my student." said Toya, taking a sip of water

"Why? What happened to her?" asked Kiyone

"Come on, Toya. spill it!" siad Hayate

"Alright, alright. Get the gunk out of your ears and listen!" said Toya. "Sakuya's family are skilled ninja in the Village Hidden in the Cloud. But Sakuya has a weak body, and knew very few attacks at the time. But one day...oh, it was extremely too grusome too bare."

"What? What was too grusome too bare?" said Lei

"Sound ninja. That's what happened!" said Toya. "When she was 8, sound ninja broke into her home, stealing setting things a blaze. Two ninja held her hostage, her parents came to rescue her. They fought the leader of the ninja that were planning this. Then...well..." Toya voice trailed off

"Don't..tell them they were..." said Kaito

"...killed. Right in front of the poor girl."

Lei gasped in shock. Both Kaito and Hayate's eyes grew wider than they were. Only Kiyone bowed her head down, understanding how the girl feels. Though she didn't see her family die in front of her, she lost almost all of her family members.

"Sakuya screamed so loud that day it made the soul of a person cringe. She unleashed a set of illusions and killed the ninja in response. But she didn't really know what happened excatly."

"Poor kid. She's had it rough."

Kiyone got up from her seat, and went to cliff overlooking the crescent moon, lost in her thoughts.

"Kiyone-chan must know how Sakuya-chan feels. Almost the same thing happened to her." said Lei

"Yeah, I heard about the Uchiha clan. Unbearable stuff." said Toya.

Kiyone looked to the moon as the men were talking, hoping that Sasuke was going to recover, hoping to make it in time for the finals. Until she heard a rattle in the bushes.

"So, you're here, aren't you? Why don't you come out?"

A black-haired girl looked at Kiyone with her emerald-green eyes. Her headband reflected the light of the moon. Her face looked sad and gloomy.

"You're Sakuya, right? Why don't you sit with me, to get you to relieve your mind, you know?"

Sakuya slowly walked to Kiyone, still with that sad look to her face. She nodded, as a way to say 'sure'.

"Toya told me about what happened to your family. It's very sad, since you're so young right now. I think that I know how you feel right now, Sakuya."

Sakuya suddenly gave a cold glare to Kiyone.

"How would you know? You've never had your whole family killed by people. You never had to go through all of this pain, this dark place in your conscious!" she said softly but sternly "How would you know how I feel? You don't even know me."

Sakuya's words struck a nerve in Kiyone's brain. It made her a bit mad, but she couldn't go rough on the girl.

"You wanna know?" Kiyone said, returning the glare Sakuya shot "My whole clan, my family, who once were the proudest clan in all of Konoha, was slaughtered, massacred by one of our own. My older cousin...he killed them, he killed them all. Only ones left alive were my younger cousin and myself. We only have each other, to keep our clan alive..."

Sakuya's eyes grew a little wide, but her face remained the same.

"We were so intent on revenge, Sasuke and I. We wanted so bad to kill Itachi, for what he's done to the clan. We...obviously needed help, but at the time, there was nothing we could do but comfort each other. I did jobs to get us both an apartment to live in. I had my missions, and I became a chuunin. But the strangest thing to me, after I joined my squad, after all the missions and adventures we've had, revenge never crossed my mind."

Sakuya lowered her head, along wih her eyelids.

"You're bent on revenge on the Sound, right? For what they did to your parents?" Kiyone asked

Sakuya clenched her fist as she heard Kiyone say something about the Sound. Her eyes burned with anger.

"I see. Well, let that anger go and leave it Sakuya, because revenge isn't worth it, no matter how terrible and unforgivible the deed. It's like a chain, a cursed chain that you've bound yourself to for life. It'll be all you think about, you won't move on from it, and it will take you over until death.
