Ok, so I was talking to two of my friends. One being an alto and one being in band. My alto friend mentions how much of rip off she thinks it is that the sopranos alway have the melody. Thats how we got to be talking about sopranos. Then my band friends all:
" Oooo soprano joke! Whats the first thing a soprano does when she wakes y in the morning? Puts her clothes back on and goes home!"
It was really quiet then I was like " you know I"m a soprano right, you just called me a slut! Not cool gonk "
He says the sopranos at his old school always got a really bad rep for being sort of slutty in nature. I haven't noticed that thought. Like at my school the altos always get the rep for being kinda slackers and such, and the sopranos get the really girly sort of image and such, but I'm never heard the slut thing before.
~Discuss~ 1. Assumtions about certain singers (things you've heard certain sections or singers have a reputation of)

I love out band geeks.

No offence, but I don't like the attitude of.. pretty much all the sapranos I've met. Being an alto, I naturally think my group is better, but I guess I just don't like the sapranos in my school.
They're always getting yelled at by our choir teacher for messing the song up too razz good times, good times.
(P.S. again, no offence, but the sapranos in my school are kinda the slutty type..)
but other than those opinions I have.. I haven't really heard any assumptions about singing classes much.. then again I'm so far down on the news line in my school I'm just barely hearing rumors from last year. >.<

She knows I love her though. no, I'm a soprano because I have a high range. End of story, and do you have any idea how childish it sounds, you generallizing a whole section including me because Mr. L placed you alto?

At the end of the day we are a choir not, four sections at war to prove a point. Besides just because we do get alot of really bitchy people, so do some alto sections, and there are lots are really nice people in the soprano section stare

I noticed that Altos always complain and say stuff like, "How come we ALWAYS have the harmony?!"
And last year, I was a second soprano which is also called a mezzo soprano, (although this year im a soprano)and we would be like belting out our notes like she told us to, and because we were with the sopranos, we blended in perfectly with our pitches and she kept saying "I can't hear the seconds! Be louder!" So we all ended up hurting our throats, and she got laid off anyways.

yea. i have noticed that kind of thing throughout my choir as well. you can tell who is saprano and alto just by looking at them. but there are some who dont fit the "typical description" of altos and saprano. I sang alto for a year and then i decided to sing saprano. I give alto a lot of credit for singing what they sing. because without the harmonies, the songs sound boring. I love hearing awesome harmonies. So the altos and sapranos get a lot very well were i am. My friends range from alto and saprano. I have a lot of alto friends. but i also have a lot of saprano friends. ^^
i also do not fit the "typical" saprano decsicrpition. I hate being preppy n such. I would rather be weird n unique. I know a lot of altos who are more preppy than some of the sapranos.

Yeah, I was an alto last year, but I switched just because my range has always been more comfortable as a soprano, and I work on that low stuff with my vocal teacher to stretch my range out a bit so I can excersise my low stuff. The song would be a total bore without alittle bit of everything really though. As long as everyone puts in an equal bit then you can make something really great ^^

It was funny at the beginning of the year, our choir director told us that everyone in the schools choir program are sooo talented cuz most of us are cappable of singing both saprano 1 and alto 2 and everywhere inbetween. LOL!

Psh. I'm a sopp and you'd never guess by looking at me.
I guess that Sopps have the reputation of being stuck-up preps, and preps are usually associated with sluts. It's a chain thing.
I say don't let it get to you too much, I don't let it get to me.
And to your friend who was bitching... tell her thats basically the POINT of the sopprano line, is to have the melody that sticks out and sits on top of the support given by the sections.
it's just like in the band. The flutes and clarinets and trumpets normally get the melody, and the oboes and flutes the solos. The flutes/clarinets/trumpets sit on top of the clarinets, who sit on top of the alto saxs, who sit on top of the tenor saxs/french horns, which sit on top of the trombones/euphoniums, which sits on top of the baritone sax/tuba/bassoon/bass clarinet, which sits on top of percussion.
Usually.
It's the same with a choir.
The sopps sit on the altos that sit on the tenors that sit on the basses/baritones. It's quite a simple concept, and if they think the fact that your voice can sit nicely on top of the rest of the choir makes you a slut, well, then that's pretty ignorant if you ask me =/
Just because you chose to be in a certain section dosent change your attitude. I could switch to alto tomorrow (actually, no I couldn't because I'm not a low singer at ALL, but that's not the point) and my personality wouldn't change at all.
That'd be like saying that I'm nutty just because I'm in percussion in band.
But that's WRONG.
I was nutty well BEFORE I even picked up percussion X)
Ahem sweatdrop xd
