how come the two original cast members for joanne and mimi weren't in the movie?

In reality, they were all too old, but the rest of the cast could pull off the characters better then Daphne and Freddi could. So they got two younger [and not pregnant] actresses instead.

JC) Nice! Your pregnancy held you from the "Rent" film...
DRV) So, I'm told...
JC) Were you disappointed you couldn't be part of it?
DRV) I had moved on from the film five years ago when Spike Lee was interested in directing it and the deal fell through. After that, I figured, OK, Mimi is 19, move on. But, when I heard that the rest of the posse were going to be in it, well frankly, I gagged.
JC) What did you think of Rosario Dawson's performance and the film in general?
DRV) I have not seen the film.

You just don't like their acting... or what? What I meant was, is that they could pull off being young better then they could. They're all very talented, and I think they're all equally talented.
