Year of the Rooster, Spring Month March 21.

In this morning I woke as I would any other day to the rising sun in the direction of the Rabbit (east). However this day was some how uplifting to the spirit, incense burned upon the mantel in my room, the servants were going about their busy work as I prepared for the day. Chan Juan, the main servant girl of the house, laid out my robes at the foot of my bed as she bowed respectfully and then left me to myself. Once dressed and ready I adorned my hair in the ornamented style of which wasmy status in the Chinese Empire, a High ranked scholar. The Emperor had been kind enough to give me a house and land as well as sevants to attend my every need, as well as my tokens the Emperor has so Kindly bestowed upon me. I was a Scholar seeking knowledge and them Empire was as well; it was only fitting that I and few others were chosen to work within his great courts and councils to share our trade.

The day was nice as any day within the city, murmers of peasants in the market place, to the priests chanting their every day Buddhist rituals. This, the month of Spring, had the leaves on the trees blowing in every direction, as the smoke raised from the artisan shops as they smoldered and molded the precious bronze our Great Country of China held dear. Blossoms from trees imported from our western traders fell upon the wind as I walked through the Zen Gardens to enlighten my Spirit as well as my knowledge, a daily routine that cleared my mind for more open thoughts.

Today I had an important meeting with the Emperor; he sent an urgent message in writting the night before to meet at his grand palace. It was noted that it was extreemly important, as well as mandatory, for every Scholar in and outside of his courts attened the gathering. As the Mists from my Crop feilds dispersed and the sun rose to greater heights I knew my time of thought must be interrupted to start my journy to the palace. I called fourth Yue Ying, my Stable Keeper to bring around my Escort Horse. Then I Mounted the dark horse and began my ride through the city streached out before me to the grand palace of the Emperor.

The trades with the eastern countries had been going very well, as well as our own resources. Crops and Livestock were in great supply and live was very good as well as pleasing. Art thrived once more and shown out unlike before, during the warring periods in our nation. China was at the peak of great lifestyle for those in the courts, and days were on an even spindle as nights were long and relaxing. Scholars studied and wrote scrolls all day, we pondered and sought out truths as wel as answers to questions that haven't an answer. Knowledge pays with bounty; power and wealth, yes such is the great life of a scholar, however all great days are short lived.

As I rode through the city I noticed the people, dressed in Mediocre clothing and silk, but just as happy not knowing the truths of knowlege. They worked their trade day by day, dawn to dusk, wether it be farmer, artisan, murchant or a simple tailor. Ignorance is bliss, one once said, because with knowledge comes powerful conflict. As I neared the palace the buildings gained a more sophisticated stature; they were adorned with carvings as well as broze statues and jade. The palace was the most beautiful of the Architectures. Adorned with so many pots and vases, carvings, wall hangings, scrolls, as well as art pieces from far lands in the west, and bronze statues of the Great Emperor himself.

As I neared the palace the outside world grew quieter than usual, by this point I would hear bells of ceremonies or at least some sort of chatter going about near the gates. However as I neared instead of chatter or bells, I heard the Unmistakable screams of people inside the walls, mostlikely in the Gardens. I hesitated, should the rat go into a cage where the other rats screamed for mercy...no. Someone came running out the gates with scrolls in hand, a great fire had been constructed on the other side of the wall as they threw our precious writtings to the flames. The flames Quickly Engulfed our knowledge, destroying them forever.

I hastily asked a merchant before the gate what was amiss, and to my utter suprise and shock, he stated, "The emperor has decided that knowledge in his lower ranks would lead to a rebellion or competition, so what does one do when there is a threat such as that. They eradicate it." I stared at the man in schock, as a scholar my very life was in danger for knowing my very own trade.

Why, why now? Was something amiss in the Great court to make the Emperor feel this way? Asking these questions was irrelevant, I had to secure my future and my life. I rode like the winds of the east back to my land and my house, I had to collect all of my things and hasitly make my way out of the main city. I could settle down somewhere, I could hide until it all blew over, and If I couldn't protect my own life, i could at least save my Written Knowledge somewhere for the future generations of scholars.

I reached my house and even now, when I am writting this I think that i am too late to make my Escape. The Emperor knew too well that I was sly enough to not fall for his plot. When I didn't attend his meeting this morning, he knew where to find me, and now i hear in the distance nearing, the soldiers that have come to take me away. I regretfully say now that Ignorance is Bliss and that too much knowledge has lead to my Immediate downfall.

((This was A paper I wrote for Anth. 111 It was a story paper haveing to do with satus as well as detail of the life within china from the view of a scholar. However at one point The emperors Council man put the idea, of knowledge is power into his head, which lead to the topic of..."hey If they get smart they may have the will to over throw you, or compete for higher ranks ect ect ect. It was a fun paper to write, I got an 'A' on it.
woot mrs. Lorenzinni!))
