UPDATE:I made a better one so I could post it on dA. :BThis little tutorial just shows the basic 'rules' that help me out the most when drawing hands. Hope it helps you as well! Two things I forgot to mention are: it's better to draw hands too big, than too small, and if you get stuck, the best thing to do is look at your own hands. (A resource so obvious it often gets overlooked. ^__~ )

This is one of the most seccessful hand tutorials that I have ever seen in my life. One thing that still troubles me is that I'm not always sure how wide to make the fingers.

Well thank you, I'm very glad to hear you say that! :3 Finger width, hmm... I think it's just something you have to estimate. After all, finger width and length varies a lot in real life, so it's not very exact. Also, I've come to find that the shape of the fingers is more important for getting the right look.. you might get them the perfect size and width, but if the shape is wrong, they can still look like sausages. XD; But finger shape is very subtle, so it would just be confusing to try and explain.. My best suggestion is to look at drawings by hand masters, such as Michelangelo and Alphonse Mucha, (sorry, I can't think of any really good manga/comic style examples ATM) and just try to gain some wisdom from observation. :3

I have a question. When all the fingers are totally extended, what's the best way to show stretching under the skin? Like, muscles and such?

ChibiFoxxyLady I have a question. When all the fingers are totally extended, what's the best way to show stretching under the skin? Like, muscles and such? Totally extended, like.. reaching out, straining to reach something, kind of? Hmmm... well, (if it were me) first of all, I'd show the fingers bending slightly backwards, instead of just straight out. Also, I'd emphasize the tendons on the knuckles at the base of the fingers, (the ones that you can see in the close-up in the tutorial) because they stand out and pull my fingers up/back when I stretch them out as far as I can. I'd also spread the fingers out, rather than having them all pointing straight forward. (And if it's a manly hand, maybe put a few popping veins on there. XD; Am I going too far?)Does that make sense? ^_^;
