Welcome to the Great Hall.
* Vast chamber with an enchanted ceiling that mirrors the sky outside. Four long tables for the four houses. Closest to the doors from the Entrance Hall is Slytherin, then Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and next to the far wall, Gryffindor (this order may possibly be reversed, depending on how you orient the room to the entrance hall). The teachers sit at the High Table, a table on a raised platform at the front of the room.
* A door behind the staff table allows a person to enter the Great Hall from outside without going through the main entrance.
* There are windows into this room from the lawn outside.
* There is a smaller antechamber connected to the Great Hall, door behind the teachers' table, with a fireplace and many portraits (including that of the Fat Lady's friend Violet) off the Great Hall.
* Four giant hourglasses - one for each House. Each hourglass is filled with gemstones rather than sand, one gemstone in the lower bulb for each House Point currently held by that House. (originally in Entrance Hall)Gryffindor: 0Ravenclaw: 0Hufflepuff: 0Slytherin: 0/HP-lexicon.

Coughing, Samantha Harwood walked into the Great Hall looking all about her. She wasn't quite sure where to sit, she had never really made close friends during her past years at Hogwarts. Her eyes scanned the Gryffindor table, looking for a relatively empty space.

Persephone Reynolds, possibly the most timid of all the first year Gryffindors this year brought, yawned quietly, and took a sip of orange juice. Her tattered copy of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them was opened to a page displaying many colorful pictures of Merfolk, and was propped up on a bowl of fruit in front of her. After scribbling down a brief description of their eating habits in her notebook, and smiling at the notes made in the margins in her father's messy scrawl, she glanced up. Her eyes fell upon Samantha, who appeared to be searching for a place to sit. She smiled as she attempted to catch Samantha's eye, and moved her book bag to the floor to make room.
She wasn't afraid of Samantha, as some would be, with her alternative and different style. On the contrary. She trusted those who were fellow Gryffindors. Deep down, they were all pretty much the same. All put in the same house for the same reasons.
Slytherins, on the other hand, would be a different matter entirely, but at the same time, still the same. Slytherins didn't seem to be the kind that you would want to trust easily. And they were all put in the same house for the same reason.

Movement caught Samantha's eye. A bag dropped to the floor. Room made for her? Perhaps. She'd take it anyway. She needed a place to sit, and if the first year didn't want to sit with her she wouldn't inflict her company for long. She just wished she had remembered the first year's name. She'd heard it at the sorting, but as she had still been recovering hadn't really processed it. Clearing her throat again, and brushing her hair out of her eyes, she cautiously made her way over.
"May I sit here?" she asked softly, tapping the girl on the shoulder. "If you don't mind..."

She looked up and smiled. "Feel free, theres plenty of room." She scooped up some of her eggs onto her toast, and took a bite.
"You're... Samantha, right?" She asked, recalling the night before, just after the Sorting feast, in the line to get into Gryffindor Tower, someone calling that name, and the face she was currently looking into responding. She held out her hand. "I'm Persephone Reynolds."

"Thanks, and nice to meet you Persephone." She smiled slightly nodding. She sat down and surveyed the food in front of her. She hated trying to pick out what she wanted to eat. She cast a surreptitious glance at her new companion to see what she was eating, and promptly copied her.
"So, how do you like Hogwarts? Are you being treated well? Who's your favorite teacher so far?" she asked.

Persephone poked at her eggs with her fork, and then took a sip of her orange juice before answering.
"I really like it... Its just like Mom and Dad said it would be. Although... they've never been here. Mom went to the Salem Witches Institute in the United States, and Dad went to Durmstrang. But I really like it. Most people seem to be pretty nice." She glanced at the Slytherin table nervously, but then continued to talk. "Professor Dumbledore seems to be a nice man... a bit loony, but in the end, he makes a lot of sense... I haven't really had a chance to talk to anyone else yet. I think you'd be the first other student who I've really talked to. Is there anyone in particular that I should look out for to stay out of trouble?" She asked as she took another bite of her toast.

Samantha followed her glance at the Slytherin table. "Well... I suppose that's the sort of thing you need to judge by yourself. Everyone interacts differently from one to the next don't they? I mean, one person may dislike me, but like you immensely. And its not always fair to take another's judgments as your own." She smiled kindly, if not a bit sadly. She went on quieter. "Don't judge all by prejudice. The Slytherins aren't all bad." She went on.
"Anyways, Dumbledore is a saint. That's all there is to it." she smiled. "Even if he is a bit loony." She lifted her goblet. "So, it must be very interesting to have parents with so different experiences! They must tell you loads of stories!" she said enviously. "But how did you end up at Hogwarts then? A neutral third option?" She grinned.

Persephone listened, nodding at the correct points to show that she understood. She's really nice, she thought as Samantha finished her talk about judging others.
"Oh, yes. Mom and dad told me plenty of stories about their days in school. Which is why I can't seem to find that homesick feeling, I think. I'm originally from the United States, and I was supposed to attend Salem, just like mom, but at the last moment, mom and dad thought, 'Hogwarts is the school that the Potter boy studied at, wasn't it? Same with Albus Dumbledore." and they thought I'd get a better education here. So here I am." Persephone smiled at the thought of her parents. They were so different, but were the happiest couple she had ever seen. Sure, they had their fights, but at the end of the day, they still loved each other as much as on their wedding day, about fifteen years ago.

Samantha raised her eyebrows slightly at Persephone's casual usage of "That Potter Boy" but didn't comment. She put the slight disrespect down the to fact that her new acquaintance was American, and didn't understand what "The Boy Who Lived" stood for.
"Well I don't think you'll regret your decision. You'll only get top notch at Hogwarts. If you put in the effort. Plus the food is great!" She gave a small smile. She found the girl very easy to talk to, despite the fact that she was a first year. She hadn't talked this much in years! Samantha finished her plate and slid it forward a bit on the table, turning to face Peresphone.

Persephone grinned, and finished off the rest of her bacon and eggs, but then when it was gone, she frowned slightly.
"Where does it come from? You can't just magic food out of nothing..." Throughout her not-yet 24 hours in the school, she thought she'd seen everything. Although she saw them just the same at home, it surprised her to see so many ghosts and moving paintings. Even the poltergeist surprised her - however, she had a feeling that it was intentional, as he flew out of sight immediately after, singing obnoxious things about first years and wands.

Samantha hadn't ever really thought of that...Where did the food come from? She blushed. "Um...well you know...The house-elves make it and all. I guess they just send it out to the hall...when they're done making it."
*Way to be cool Sammy-girl. That was brilliant...*
She spared a glance at Peeves, muttered under her breath about him and stood. "Well I'm off to the common room. I had a lovely time. Come talk whenever!" She smiled, picked up her bag, and walked off.
