I'm not very far in the original Final Fantast Seven...
Can someone please tell me how you get past that part where you come out of jail and all the guards are dead?

You need to make your way up to the top floor of the Shinra building - inspect the first dead guard and wake up Tifa, then free the rest of the team. Check in on Jenova, and follow the blood to the Presidents office. It'll prompt you from now on.

that is correct that is what you do to get the story going again.....bit i would wait a lil bit and run into the monster called soldier 3rd class and steal the hardedge from them. it is a sword for cloud and it will be the most powerful sword you can get until you get the force stealer in junon. it makes the battle with rufus even easier and if you steal a lot of them you can sell them off for a lot of gold. running into soldier 3rd class takes a while but it is worth it.
