Kukuru sneezed. Earlier on, it had been raining, and the ground was still moist and the air still cool. The scent of soil and water drifted around the silver klipspringer, but the little creature still could not understand why, exactly, he had sneezed.

Maybe someone was thinking about him? Talking about him?

Naaaah. It was just cold, that was all.
Shaking the water droplets off his coat, Kukuru looked for signs of his elder brother, Makuu. They had been 'hunting' together, foraging for food. This was one of their 'training missions' that their father had assigned them, and Kukuru had been all too eager to start it.

"Makuu," he called, taking a sniff to try and sense his brother's prescense, "Are you there?"

They'd have to get cracking if they were to complete their 'Wild Dog Training Mission' by sunrise.

"Eh?", Makuu grunted, raising his head from the ground, where he was eating some moist, golden savannah grass.

"What?", the young male snapped.

He swallowed the last bit of grass and trotted up beside his brother. "Of course I'm here, you-," Makuu paused, and sneezed.

He felt his hooves seep into the muddy terrain underneath him. Blinking, he turned his attention to the pale grey, cloudy sky. A gust of wind rolled off the distant savannah grass and collided with his grey fur.

"I don't know what father was thinking when he sent us out here. The good food's been ruined by mud", he sighed, kneading his hooves into the soggy ground.

Kukuru chuckled at his brother.

"Someone got up on the wrong side of the den, eh?" he laughed, but gave his older brother a wink. Kukuru secretly admired his brother, but would not stoop so 'low' to tell his brother that himself.

No, that wouldn't be cool at all!

With a sniff, Kukuru bent down and joined his brother in inspecting the grasses. It was true... the rough weather from before seemed to have ruined a lot of the grasses.

"Maybe he wanted us to just... go out for a change?" he suggested, not knowing if this was the reason, but knowing that his foster father certainly wasn't stupid, "Hey, he does seem to like having time to himself..."

And with his girlfriend, too.

Kukuru shook the thought from his mind.
He wondered if his father did enjoy their company or not...

Makuu snorted, reading Kukuru's thoughts.

"Oh, yeah! Alone.", Makuu laughed, shaking his head. "Pff. That girl of his..", Makuu said, staring out towards the horizon.

"Father sure is different from us, isn't he?", Makuu chuckled, although the enthusiasm was gone.

"Sometimes I wonder."

Kukuru's eyes glinted, and he looked up. Somehow, the mood of the conversation had switched from light-hearted... to slightly...

Well, sad...

He stared at his hooves, and then lowered his head.

"I suppose he is different," he said, "I've met with quite a few... others. And they all say the same thing. That word. You know the one."

Prey.

Kukuru couldn't bear to speak it out loud.

"Sometimes I wonder, too. Who we really are..." he straightened, and then gave a laugh, "Well, we're wild dogs. Right?"

At least, that was what he had believed in as a fawn. But Kukuru... was he still as naive as before? He didn't really know, and decided to press Makuu to see if he had any answers.

Makuu butted Kukuru's horns with his affectionately, sensing his brother's uneasiness.

"That word?", Makuu paused, "oh", he uttered, looking sadly into his brother's blue eyes. A flicker of confusion and hurt reflected in them, and then were gone. He straightened himself and lifted his chin, refusing to be emotional in front of his brother. He knew what Kukuru thought of him, although he suspected Kukuru didn't know that he had caught onto his brotherly admiration.

"Who we really are?", Makuu echoed. "We're Makuu and Kukuru, wild dogs, sons of Chiboa", he said, narrowing his eyes. "Who could question that?" But inside, it felt almost as if he disagreed.

Makuu's words made Kukuru calm down a little, though he still could not understand some things. Chiboa looked so... different from them, as his big brother had mentioned before. He couldn't help thinking about his biological mother and father...

Chiboa had a muzzle, paws and sharp fangs. He had a long, scruffy tail and longer fur. Kukuru and Makuu had horns, and hooves. The silver klipspringer couldn't help wondering how that had actually happened... although, he did not deny that Chiboa was their 'Father'. After all, he had taught them all they knew, and raised them as pups.
Which, of course, meant they were wild dogs. If they were ordinary preybeasts, Chiboa would have eaten them by now.

"You're right," Kukuru felt better, but doubt still gnawed at him from the back of his mind, "We're dogs."

He cast a glance at his hooves, and shuffled uncomfortably. Even though he wished to believe those words with every inch of his being, doubt was still rearing it's ugly head.

When would they find out the truth? What was the truth?

Only time would tell.
