It was time. Was it time? Oh, she didn't know! All she knew was that she was in a severe amount of pain. So much pain, in fact, that it had woken her up in the middle of the night. At first she thought that maybe someone was attacking her, clawing at her insides. But then she felt something move inside, and instincts told her what it was. Or at least what it might be.

Moving around as best she could in her den, she opened up the link between her and her twin sister, Ophelia.

"Sister!" she whispered loudly, nudging her twin with her nose. "Something is moving in Echo's stomach." Her voice sounded slightly worried. She had never done this before. What if she failed, or couldn't get the puppy out? What if she couldn't take care of it? Oh no!

Whining to herself, she began panicking.

"Sister, sister! Get Logan, please sister."

As her contractions intensified, she yelped then rose to her paws and circled about the best she could.

"Hurry!" she urged.

Ophelia was woken with a start as Echo started to writhe beside her. Dreams fled away with a tingling, and her body alighted. “Echo- Echo-?” She stammered sleepily. “What’s going on?” Elia balked and curled her tail nervously against her hips. But Echo’s words were already flooding into her mind, and reflexively, she flattened her ears and listened to it.

Something was moving in her stomach? Had she eaten something bad- but then, she remembered. “The puppies!” She gasped, and jerked her head back. “Are you alright Echo-?” Oh, dear! This was too much! She felt quivers all around her, but it wasn’t enough to keep her down.

“Logan, yes- I’ll find him-“ She gaped, and took off.

He couldn't have been far- surely he knew what was going on! "Logan!" she called, and took a sharp turn around one of the tall rocks.

Logan was at the small stream that trickled over the stones trying to figure out how to get water to the den for Echo. He tilted her head, tried to figure out if he could carry it in anything, but it was no use, how the hell was he supposed to carry water?

The orange wolf was excited, but nervous, he would hate to have to see Echo give birth to the spawn of that crazed wolf that nearly killed him. Logan made a vow to kill him if he ever came across that wolf again.

Then his ears perked up as he heard a voice, "Ophelia?" He bolted towards the noise, towards the den, was it too late? Was it? No! He couldn't be late for this, he wanted to be at Echo's side to help her. Then he spotted Ophelia, stopped for a moment, seeing the look on her face was all he needed to know what was happening,

"Lets go! We can't leave her alone," with that he bolted towards the den.

Echo circled around a few more times in the back of the den. Her sister had already hurried off to find Logan, and so she was left alone for a few minutes. They would be back soon, she knew. She didn't have to worry about a thing...

She suddenly squealed. The pain in her stomach only seemed to grow as the minutes passed. Where was her sister and Logan?! She felt as if she were going to die, she was in so much pain. Why couldn't it all just be over?

Shifting around slightly, she attempted to find a comfortable spot. But every which way she turned, no matter how much she tried, she couldn't seem to find a spot that really suited her. Damn it... she just wanted the pups out of her! Growling to herself, she whipped her head around and began biting at her stomach. In a frenzy of pain and panic, she didn't know what else to do.

Whatever it was, something worked to coax the little puppy out, or at least half-way out. Echo felt something move, something wet suddenly appear under her tail. Tilting her head curiously, she lifted her tail to peer under it.

What?

She blinked.

"Sister... something's here..."

“Yes, yes, come!” Ophelia blurted, jarring her legs uncomfortably as she slid to a stop, and instantly started running back again. “They’re coming!” Gods- pups. She never thought there would be a day when one of them would be expecting–! There were odd, fractured feelings floating through her head, no doubt echoes of Echo’s own feelings. It served to spur her on a bit faster, and after seeing Logan that one time by the water, she had not looked back to even see if he was still behind her.

Echo’s soft, but slightly confused voice slid into her mind, and she nearly fell over. Ah! They couldn’t start without her- and then, she was there, and practically had to jump aside to stop herself from crashing into the reclining Echo.

“Something came out-?” She gasped, her tail shooting upwards in surprise.

Logan had to watch his footing, he was on edge chasing after Ophelia, he crashed into a bush and almost fell over into a tree trunk. He caught himself the second time, the stinging in his leg from the crash fell from his mind, he had to get back! He had never seen Ophelia run as fast as she did, she disappeared within moments, as he neared the den he dug his paws into the ground to stop himself at the dens entrance.

Should he go in?

He crouched down, inched a bit inside the entrance, he wasn't sure whether to enter or not. He remembered specifically that in his birthpack that new mothers wanted fathers outside, not close to the pups just yet, so he wasn't quite sure. He was anxious but a bit apprehensive as well, he wasn't sure what the pup would look like...him and echo, or echo and that other...thing.

"Ish she alright? Echo, are you alright?" he called inside, still not decisive on whether he should go in farther, stay where he was, or go and get food for them all right about now. Such a dilemma.

Not much progress had been made while her sister had been out getting Logan--at least not much besides a little puppy head peeping out. So Echo was quite relieved when her sister appeared suddenly with Logan in tow. She nearly wailed out loud with delight as Ophelia came crashing back into the den.

"Sister!" she cried, her tail lifted as well, but for a different reason. "There is something!" Keeping her tail lifted, she craned her neck around to look her little puppy poking out to meet the world. Yet she didn't quite understand. Was it supposed to take this long?

Glancing away from the puppy and up towards the entrance of the den, her ears perked as she heard her mate and saw him. Logan! Oh, she was so glad he was here!

"Echo alright!" she assured him, her tail wagging slightly. She felt as if she could completely relax now. The two closest wolves to her were here and everything would be completely alright--

She suddenly felt another contraction, and she was forced to shut her eyes in pain. "Sister, it hurts," she whined, her ears folding back against her skull. She didn't know what was worse, knowing that that horrid excuse for a wolf had gotten her pregnant or that now she was suffering immense pain for his actions. She thought perhaps they were all one in the same.

"But sister," she said quietly. "Tell Logan to stay outside. I don't want him to see me like this..." And by like this she meant in pain.

More contractions, more pain. But at least things were progressing. Within half an hour the puppy was out, squirming under her tail. Her eyes widening slightly, Echo nosed the thing with her nose. At first she wasn't quite sure what she should do. But then she took another look at it and noticed how wet and dirty it looked. Tilting her head, she moved the puppy so that it lay in between her forelegs. Then she cleaned it, licking it and nudging it until it appeared to be the cleanest thing on the planet.

The puppy, now clean and fresh, opened its mouth and cried out. Echo smiled slightly. Motherly instincts made her really proud.

Licking the pup one more time, she moved the puppy over towards her stomach so that it could eat. Once again, her motherly instincts had taken over. But then she remembered something... was her child a girl or a boy? She couldn't believe she had forgotten that! Nosing the pup again, she found out that it was in fact a little girl.

"Sister... it's a little girl," she whispered.

Smiling endlessly, she continued to watch her daughter. And that's when she noticed something. The puppy... she had... orange?! Echo glanced up at Logan, who was still at the entrance of the den. Orange. She glanced back down at the pup. Orange. There was none of that ghastly gray on her pup anywhere! She couldn't believe it... she had been wrong about that other male. Logan, Logan was the--

"FATHER!" she cried. "Logan's the father! Sister..." she said softly, calming herself down a little bit. "You can let Logan in now.. to see his daughter."

Ophelia whimpered and lowered her head as Echo’s words rolled off of her. It was almost too much to contain such excitement, but after the crouching girl began to issue orders, Ophelia did not hesitate to comply. “Echo would like you to leave for now.” She spoke dutifully. “Wait outside-“ She didn’t mean to say it as placidly as she did. But surely he knew could recognize the privacy the situation called for. She did not wait to hear what he said, ducking back into the den and nervously licking at her sister’s face.

“It’s alright- it’ll stop, I know it will–“ It had to, didn’t it? Women gave birth all the time... but she bristled to think of some ugly grey spawn demonizing its way out of Echo. If she ever saw him again she’d...!

It was a strange feeling. She felt bits and pieces of her sister’s pain as their bond struck between them vibrated with all the wild thoughts. She gave her space though- taking two steps to the side so she could crouch and almost completely cover the opening to the den. It took longer then she had expected, and by the end of it Ophelia had started to pick hair out of her chest again. It was getting to be a bad habit.

And then- her niece arrived. “A girl?” Ophelia fawned, her tail thrusting about eagerly. And it was orange!

She did not hesitate to turn around the den, and stick her nose out. "Logan- you can come in."

Logan understood when Ophelia told him to go outside, he took once last look at Echo and his heart ached, he didn't want her to be in pain, she had been through so much, he didn't know how either of them would handle it if the puppies weren't theirs, but hers and that...things.

He scooted outside and waited by the den entrance, curling his tail about him nervously, but waiting outside to protect those inside form anyone who dare try and get close. He was worrying, he was praying, he couldn't remember the last time he prayed for another let alone himself, but this prayer had a purpose.

He wanted Echo to be alright, be safe, not suffer, he prayed that the gray male hadn't harmed her in anyway, he prayed that Ophelia might accept him over time.

The orange male heard Ophelia say it was alright now and he gulped, his mouth was dry, what could he say to her if it wasn't theirs? What would Ophelia say to him? She'd kill him surely. He was nervous, almost to teh point of shaking.

Slowly he began inside, careful of where Ophelia was, and he looked towards Echo, she seemed so tired, she was curled around something. He tilted his head and went closer, trying to see what the pup or pups looked like...he was still praying, in the back of his mind, though he couldn't see that well.

Then he saw it, her, the lone pup, looked like Echo and...it had orange! He would jump up it there wasn't the threat of banging his head and having the den fall in, his tail started wagging, he nuzzled and licked Echo's cheek.
"Our family Echo," he looked towards Ophelia and smiled warmly, "All of ours," then he turned back to Ehco and nuzzled her again, "I love you Echo, is it a girl or boy?" he had tears in his eyes, he was so happy.

He had a family.

Echo quietly lay at the back of the den, her one and only pup suckling at her belly. It was a weird sensation, having the tiny life nibble at her like that. But she liked it for some reason, and it gave her a sense of motherly pride and accomplishment. She had done something good for once in her life. She had brought something into the world, with the help of her mate. This puppy was theirs, and it had nothing to do with that wretched gray beast.

As Logan was brought into the den, the small female lifted her gaze and smiled at him, her tail wagging frantically and thumping against the ground. She couldn't have been happier in that moment. Logan was the father!

The newly made mother whined quietly to her mate, but it was a happy whine since she couldn't express her delight with words. As he nuzzled her and licked her, she nuzzled him in return. He seemed so proud to have a child with her, and it simply made her heart soar. Nothing could have made her happier than seeing the look on his face after seeing his pup. HIS pup, not that Croanyl's.

"Is girl," she whispered quietly, as if talking too loud would ruin the moment and disturb her daughter.

"Our family.." she whispered. Ophelia was an aunt. Echo was a mother. Logan was a father. Things couldn't have been any better at that moment, and nothing could have spoiled her happiness.

Ophelia took a deep breath, and reveled in the quiet moment. She was glad for Echo. She didn’t remember a time where she had ever felt this elated. But, with restraint. She was always reserved. Perhaps too many nerves had been expended trying to keep the sisters out in the wild so long ago. Oh! It was so long ago, wasn’t it? It didn’t feel like that long. To think she’d had once not had a full belly and had worried constantly over the twins well-being. Now Echo was a mother- and with a slight wince, Ophelia noted she was now more of a woman then even she was. She was proud. Proud of her sister- this would do their mother to shame. They could do fine on their own, without them entangling themselves in her. She might have needed help from time to time, but Echo was no weakling. But then, Ophelia had always known that.

With an eager smile, Ophelia gently nuzzled her sister, and withdrew. “I had better go and announce the birth and such.” She stumbled, deciding it was probably best to leave the two parents to themselves now.
