Wintertime could be such a depressing time of year. The trees looked dead and bare. Snow covered all the lovely things of the world and made it feel empty and loveless. The sun was often obscured by thick clouds, and lacked the ability to warm one when it did appear. And then there was the cold, often biting into one so deeply that it touched the tired, bare parts of the soul.
However, Delphia could never quite entirely see it as a sad time of year. After all, it had been in winter that she had met Sora, the dearest of dear to her heart. So as the days shortened and grew chillier, she found herself smiling quietly as she went about her activities. Autumn was well on its way, with most of the leaves having fallen from the trees already, and frost touching the grasses in the mornings. It was on one such cold morning that the raccoon mare was strolling along a path through the wide meadows. She bobbed her head amiably at a family of rabbits that streamed by, and bid good morning to a sparrow that swooped by all alone.
This caused her to cast a look skyward. She knew Jaden was up there somewhere, probably hiding in the sun. He would be sure to see her giving him a look, no matter where he was up there. The look said, "No attacking anyone I'm greeting, or there will be trouble." Oh, he knew better than to do that, but after all, he was a bird of prey. She liked to remind him sometimes that he needed to behave himself around her.
Jaden, from a soaring height above the meadow, cackled to himself. He had always loved Delphia's spunk while treasuring her soft heart. That mare could charm the fangs from a kalona, if she put her mind to it. He of course had no intention of hunting anywhere near where she was wandering. He took a care to hunt elsewhere, usually in the mountains far from the lands of the tribe. Still, he was a prankster. Spotting a fox trotting along the path towards the mare, he folded his wings and dove.

((Just realized I'm on the mule again. That's common for me)) sweatdrop
Tired. So tired of being hurt was the one thing that played like an evil reminder in a certain mare's heart. As she returned back to wence she came she felt royally disgusted her attempt had failed in vain.
"Understand why he couldn't. Kimi confused is very much."
Her long striped tail swayed back and forth as she walked along. Her heart ached a little leaving Celendria's pup behind, but it was her feelings that jolted her to leave like she did. Perhaps it was panic, or just some random oddity that made her feel this way.
Her mind wandered this way and that trying to figure out why, or a simple explanation what had gone wrong the first time around. Pouring your heart out to someone, then being rejected was the worst feeling in life. Like your heart was ripped from your chest and spat upon the ground, lying there beating miserably. This is how she felt at the moment. Melancholy. Pathetic.
But winter was coming which was something she'd never once laid a hoof upon. A pure white blanket of frozen ice covering the land in shining grace. Depending on how lost she had gotten herself on the way back, the snow might fall anyway.
Her head bobbed along taking the slower stride noting how the leaves had all but nearly fallen to rest upon the hard surface below. Her senses cautioned her just then of another just around the bend she was following. Eyes teaming with curiousity and mistrust gleamed in the deep orange glow she always posessed as the light of sun and moon bounced off upon them.
Friend or Foe she wondered. Soon she would find out.

Jaden screeched a laugh as he plunged and snapped his claws closed just above the fox's head about the same time as Delphia had nickered a greeting to the furry four-footer. He labored powerfully with his wings to gain altitude before those strong white teeth that were gaping his direction closed on his lovely black tail feathers. He managed to get himself out of reach by the time her jaws snapped shut. He still cackled to himself as he pivoted on the wind, circling over the glistening meadow and the raccoon mare. His sharp eyes caught sight of movement in the trees, but the bird didn't much care about other soquili. His mirth was purely directed at Delphia.
She heard the rustle of wings just as she greeted the fox-brother. She drew a fast breath before noticing it was a very large black bird. Jaden! With a squeal she lunged forward, leaping over the startled and very frightened fox. Her jaws gaped as she leapt into the air after the fleeing hawk, not aring particularly that she hadn't managed to pluck his tail feathers for his prank. She would lay into him later, when he was within close rnage. All four hooves met the ground again with a resounding thud, and she turned to see the fox fleeing for his life in a red streak, heading for the trees. She heaved a sigh of regret and threw a murderous glance at the hawk. "That was downright cruel, Jaden," she muttered. "That poor fox has a vixen and three cubs at home! And you've scared him from finding their breakfast!"
Giving an irritated snort, she turned to graze on the frosted grass to soothe her ire. A good graze always calmed her and put things back in balance. If she could have, she'd have hummed quietly as she ate. Instead, she snorted contentment and ripped up the blades rhythmically, taking a step every few bites. No sense in grazing a flat spot in the meadow.

Kimi was having the worst days of her life it seemed and she really did ponder if it could get worse. Her chest heaved a sigh as she stepped forward only to view the scene laid out before her. The fox, the mare resmembling herself, and a strange dark bird playing out like something she's never witnessed before. Ears listening as they swiveled she caught certain phrases or words that bellowed from the pretty mare. She seemed a bit cross but Kimi understood for the concern of the poor fox which reminded her of Everly.
Taking a few more steps she whinnied a little loudly from a distance hoping the other mare would return the greeting. Many times she'd heard of mares running amok and raged, hoping that this particular one was a little more kindred in spirit.

Hearing the plaintive whinny, Delphia's head shot up, ears pricked. She saw a mare that... looked astonishingly familiar, for some reason, emerging from the shadow of the forest. She swiftly finishd her mouthful and neighed pleasantly back. The older mare started towards the other, breaking into a smooth trot that covered the distance quickly.
She slowed and stopped when she neared the other grey mare. She still couldn't quite place why this other seemed so familiar. Now that she was closer, she was reasonably sure she hadn't met her yet... perhaps it was her parents Delphia knew? "Greetings, friend! I am Delphia." She paused and continued uncertainly. "Have we met?"

Eyes glancing upon this new mare they blinked in confusion as if seeing her own reflection. The other's eyes weren't of the orange glowing creepiness other's had stated they saw, but more of a timid natural color. It was definitely wierd to see something so much alike, yet almost a warm friendly feeling of the island long gone from her mind.
Her speech was also odd though the little mare striped with grey always tried to make a good impression.
"Kimimella. Name Kimimella. Delphia..." she paused letting the name sink further within so she wouldn't forget, "Name is nice Delphia. From the islands you are"?
She smiled at the other remindinding her of the island herd. Momentarily she'd forgotten about Kail. Perhaps this was the best thing for her distraught heart right now.

The raccoon mare considered the question. Islands? "No," she spoke slowly and thoughtfully, ears swiveling uncertainly. "I am from a village, not far from here." Her ears pricked forward then and she pawed a hoof in interest. "Which islands? And are you from there yourself?"
Right about then Jaden swooped in from the sky. A large pinecone was clutched in one taloned foot, and with a wild warcry, he released it to plunk Delphia in the head. He swooped away with a merry cackle, cawing back at her in a jeering tone before again disappearing into the sky.
Delphia gave a startled whicker at be pain of the plummeting pinecone, but otherwise didn't appear too disturbed. She cast a disgruntled look after the black hawk, though. "That boy is gonna lose a few feathers to my teeth, one of these days!"

Kimimela blinked and pawed the ground wondering what to do. Atleast the other mare was talking with her which was a comfort. But still she felt shy and backwards trying to ponder what to say and do. Kail had made her feel so miserable with a loathing toward herself. Best not to ever pour your heart out to someone like that ever again. It seemed only hurt would follow in suite and expose ones's weakness.
"Yes" she started to reply when the large bird made her sidestep almost with a start.
Blinking momentarily she broke into a smile feeling stupid yet giddy from the dive bombing.
"Yours I see. No familiars Has Kimi. Only Kimi has Kimi." she chuckled watching the other as if staring into a full based mirror. "Delphia here does live.. hmm What here is it like?" she questioned looking around here. The area simply wasn't anything like the clearing yet it did feel homely and contect to live there.

With a last withering look after the hawk, she turned her attention to the other mare. It took some time to puzzle through the unusual way the other spoke, but it wasn't difficult. In a corner of her mind, she wondered how this manner of speaking came to be... was this the normal speech pattern where she came from?
But she pushed these thoughts aside as unimportant and turned her mind to answering the question. What WAS it like here? She glanced around the quiet landscape, mostly dead, but bearing life despite this appearnce. "Well," she temporized as she thought. "Right now it doesn't look like much. But it is home" One of the family of rabbits ran by just then, heading for the cover of the trees. Delphia laughed and neighed encouragment to it as it scurried with one eye turned to the sky.
"It is a good place to live. Many creatures make this area their home." She turned her eyes towards the mare. "What was your home like, Kimi? Will you tell me about the islands? What is different?" She reached and pulled a mouthful of dry but sweet grass while listening, chewing ruminantly. Something still niggled in the back of her mind about the mare's appearance, but she still couldn't quite identify what it was. Perhaps it would come to her eventually.

Kimimela blinked watching the other realizing she carried the same likeness about her own soft gray coat. Perhaps Delphia was another from the islands but no that wasn't possible. She wasn't from her homeland for Kimi remembered the huge herds that roamed in the sanctuary of the vast tall built trees with leaves so huge you could use them for bedding.
"Islands?!" ah this perked her disappiontment with Kail far behind her. But how to explain when words were a barrier of two languages. This she would do her best at for Kimi was a born Soquili for gossip and chatting when she wanted to be. Clearing her throat she nodded with bright orange eyes gleaming with pride. Finally someone to help her forget her troubles.
"Big big trees..." she started with a thoughtful glance at a barren sparse Dicidious tree. Her mind was wandering playfully remembering the green that enveloped the land shadowing here and there with great canopies.
"Big trees high in sky. Big that no light through could come. Huge" she happily exclaimed with a bright nod watching Delphia . "Like night dark and quiet with space for play and sleep. Kimi miss big trees that keep Kimi safe."
