Um... I'm sure it'd be a lot easier to answer if you'd lay out some questions first. Because moving into a new country has a lot of legal stuff that you need to take care of. And I'm pretty sure that only the people who actually have moved abroad can help you with that.
But if you want to ask something about Finland in general, just shoot! I'm sure you'll get answered here in no time.

“Aah...Finland, with its rolling green pastures and ancient moors of serenity...oh, wait that's Scotland. Well, Finland has to have something, right?” ~ Oscar Wilde on Finland Everything you need to know: http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Finland...okay, let's be more serious. It really is nice that you've chosen this country, we'd welcome you with open arms but since we finns tend to be a bit antisocial we just nod and say "Urrrgmgnh...". No, really. Welcome. The only bad thing here is the people, if you can handle angst, drunks and idiots you'll do fine. (eh, sorry, can't get rid of the negative tone, I'm a bit angsty myself at the moment sweatdrop )

Oh, a test biggrin
Do you know your Finnish? Take this test and find out. Choose the correct alternative. The answers are in the chapter below.
I You are lost in a Finnish town. You want to know where the railway station is. What should you do?
* (A) Ask someone "Anteeksi, missä on rautatieasema?" ('Excuse me, where is the railway station?') * (B) Say "Perkele!" (a common and very expressive cuss that fortunately cannot be translated) * (C) Nothing. You can find the station by walking for another four hours. No need to have tedious conversations with scary unknown people.
II You accidentally push an old lady in the street. What should you say?
* (A) "Oho." ('Oops') * (B) "Perkele!" * (C) "Pois alta!" ('Get out of my way!') * (D) Nothing. Why should you?
III You wish to make an order in a restaurant. What do you do?
* (A) Shout "Palvelua!" ('Service!') * (B) Shout "Perkele!" * (C) Shout "Viinaa!" ('Booze!') * (D) Nothing. The waiter will probably notice you in a few hours.
IV You meet an old friend in the street. What do you do?
* (A) Say "Terve!" ('Hello') * (B) Say "Perkele!" * (C) Look in the other way and pretend not to know your old friend.
V A man approaches you and asks for small change for the bus. What do you say to him?
* (A) "Ei." ('No') * (B) "Perkele!" * (C) "Ei."
VI You hit your finger with a hammer. What do you say?
* (A) "Perkele!" * (B) "Perkele!" * (C) "Perkele!"
VII Somebody does a favor for you. What do you say to thank the person?
* (A) Nothing. * (B) "Perkele!" * (C) "Mrphh..." (incoherent mumbling)
VIII A friend tells you he or she has lost a close person. What should you do to express your compassion?
* (A) Nothing. * (B) Say "Perkele!" * (C) Walk away.
IX Somebody asks you the time. It is 4.30 PM. How do you respond?
* (A) "Ai nyt vai?" ('You mean now?') * (B) "Perkele!" * (C) "En tiedä." ('I don't know')
X Finally, your friend is leaving for abroad. What do you say?
* (A) "Ja pysykin poissa." ('And stay away') * (B) "Perkele!" * (C) Nothing.
Correct answers
Except for question VI, where all answers are correct, the correct answer for each question is (B)

I don't remember, since I'm moving there in the winter. And I lived there when I was 8... so I don't know.

Well i can tell you this much:
The weather sucks. Everything is expensive. People are strange when you are a stranger.
But we have lovely lakes!

Gah, am I the only one who absolutely loves to live in Finland? Really, people aren't that bad and weather is bad because of global warming (otherwise we would have lots of snow right now). Most of Finns speak English or at least understand some. And no, all of us don't curse that much^^

Ainoka And no, all of us don't curse that much^^ Yes we do ninja A true Finn swears all the time. There are those who dare not to, and thus are concidered as blood-traitors, heretics and witches. But no worries, the local Inquisition deals quickly with such heresy. Oh, one thing I almost forgot: you must curse with style. With a feeling. Some idiots go around yelling "Vi**u mä oon niin kännis vi**u!", which is very uncool (unless they're burning already). It might be hard to learn when to use what words with right intonation, but if the Finns are smart enough for it I bet there'll be no problem. Perkele.

This thread does quite well in pointing out how much sarcastic and self-ironic Finns tend to be. We've developed a knack at, when explaining about Finland, ignoring all the good things and ways in our vicinity and just repeat the not so flattering stereotype that apparently fits just about every Finn, except the one doing the talking, and practically everyone close to him/her razz
Someone remind me to return to this thread some time. I don't check the guild too often these days..
