Theses are the rules of the real General Discussion forum.
They are almost the exact rules of the GD.
There are some changes, to fit it to this guild.
The changes are minimal.
General Discussion In A Nutshell. Being the core tenet of the General Discussion forum, distilled down to a single explanatory sentence.
The golden rule when making threads in the General Discussion forum.
To be appropriate to General Discussion, a thread must have discussable content on a topic that doesn't already have a forum or subforum dedicated to it. Hence the two parts of the forum name:
General being stuff that doesn't already have a subforum dedicated to it.
Discussion being discussable content.
It's not rocket science
What We Like To See (and What We Don't). Being a concise summary of what makes us happy and what makes us unhappy.
YES! Discussable content - Here in GD, we like discussions. Topics that people can talk about and share their opinions on. Shocking, but true.
Stuff that doesn't belong elsewhere - If a thread's on a topic that's already got a forum devoted to it, it goes there instead. Aside from that, any subject matter goes (within the bounds of the Terms of Service).
Respect for others - In GD, as on the rest of GAIA Online, we like to foster an atmosphere of civility, tolerance, and community spirit. Even if you disagree with someone's point of view, please remember there's still a real person behind that avatar, and conduct yourself with an appropriate level of politeness and respect.
NO! Flaming - If you see a misplaced thread, report it to a moderator. Posting "stfu n00b" or whatever does nothing to help get the thread moved to the right place. Flaming is against the Terms of Service, and can get you warned or banned.
Bumping - If your thread's falling to the bottom of the page and you want to knock it up to the top again, don't just bump. Make a post that adds to the content of the thread or elaborates on the discussion at hand.
Spamming - We do not like your pointless spam, we do not like it Sam I Am. We do not think "bump for gold!!!!" rocks - that junk goes in the Chatterbox.
Begging - If you want gold bump 'til you drop in the Chatterbox. Asking for stuff here will get you nothing but scorn.
Advertising - If you want to publicize your website, auction, lottery or quest, put a link in your sig. Don't post an ad about it in GD. Advertising = spamming, and can get you warned.
White text/Unreadable tiny text - It's not funny, it's not clever. Text which is white (and thus invisible against the page background) or too tiny to read with the naked eye will be treated as if it is not there. As such, threads which do not have any visible discussion will be sent to the Recycle Bin.
Misleading titles - Titles what don't match the discussion are tricky and false, precious, and gets put in the Chatterbox.
Just So We're Totally Clear On This. Being a set of more detailed guidelines for posting which are not set-in-stone rules, but provide hints and tips on what is expected from threads in GD.
- The main intent of a thread posted in GD should be to provoke
discussion and conversation.
- Venting about That Person Who Like
Totally Pissed Me Off Today and how they're like
wicked annoying, or telling a rambly little story about A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forums just doesn't cut it, I'm afraid - they'd be better suited to your GAIA Journal.
Not GD. No, not even if you add a
"Discuss: [blah blah blah ]?" tag to the end of your post.
- The discussion should be more-or-less self-evident. You can provide a summary of the gist of the discussable content at the end of the post if you wish, but it's not mandatory. If you do so, however, it should be pertinent to the body of the post. As indicated above, no irrelevant "Blah blah blah. Discuss: Cheese." threads, please.
- "Discuss" is
not a magic word which instantly renders your thread fit for GD, and such a transparent and flimsy attempt to justify posting inappropriate stuff in GD isn't fooling anyone. If you're making a discussion topic, make it discussion-oriented
from the start. Give us something to talk about. Give us an indication of the direction of discussion you're hoping for. Saying stuff like "Discuss: Third World debt." or "Discuss: Gender politics." is only a step away from "Talk about anything here.".
- Crew members ignore discussion tags. So make sure the main body of your post is discussable, don't rely on the tags to make it so.
- Repeat attempts to get around the discuss ability rule by tacking on spurious questions or "discuss" tags will get you warned, and eventually banned.
Don't do it.
- Threads composed of a poll, and/or a single question with a one-word answer are not discussion. Stuff like "What's your favorite pet/soda/color/music genre/pie?" is not terribly discussable beyond replying with "I like cats/Vault/lime/punk/pumpkin pie.".
- Threads which are effectively just excuses to namedrop your best buddies or hated enemies (Kirara's Most Famous, Kirara's Most Despised, Who In the guild Would You Like To Bear The Babies Of, etc) are not discussions. They just turn into lists of names, and while that might be a pleasant ego-massage, it's not appropriate to GD.
Hate-threads especially are not allowed, as they are classed as abuse and harassment, and WILL get you banned.
Where Should I Post My Thread? Being a list of which topics go where in GAIA Online's forums.
