I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone's views on vegetarianism within wicca are. I myself am not vegetarian, it is not a topic covered in any of the books I have and I'd like to know what you all think, so I ask this:
Do you think it is necessary to be a vegetarian if you follow the wiccan path? [Discuss]

I tried to become a vegetarian about a month ago.... it only lasted like 3 days. And so I came to the conclusion that there's something in meat that makes it addictive. Now I just try to not eat as much of it as I use to.
There was something in one of Raymond Bucklands' books about how it's ok to eat meat just as long as it's not all you eat. Or something of nature. But he was talking about it because it's not healthy for your body when all you eat is just meat and that was why you shouldn't, because it's harmful to your body.
Hopefully that made sense.

well my friend is a vegan and i go over her house alot and she loves to cook so i get fed like a vegitarian most of the time, the only time i eat meat is when i am at home at dinner. it relly dosent matter if you eat meat or not, if one feels bad thank the animal for its life inorder to sustain your own.

I understand people's reasons for vegetarianism, but it is not something that I do. I would like to - but I know very well that I'm far too picky with my food.
Being 'eaten' is a part of nature - it is a natural thing, and whilst I am sorry that they have died for my sustinance, it's all a part of the food chain (harsh as it sounds). However, what I do believe, when it comes to eating meat, is that the animal has had to have lived a good life - being able to walk around, having food, not being beaten. Pig farming ('growing' pigs in cages barely bigger than they are), and battery hens are completely wrong. Say no to evil eggs and meat! :XP:

Battery farming hens beomes illegal in 2011! It's a while away, but at least it's going to happen. smile

Bacicly me being a vegitarian is a good thing I feel good and I have less heart pains. But one thing that caused me to becoming a vegitarian was the harm none do what ye will. So idk. Also because I feel that people over look the goodness of the fruit of the mother directly.

I used to be vegitarian for about six months, after all the issues with the cows started to happen. I liked it for a while, but I found that my iron levels were dropping quite a lot and so I had to take vitamin supplements. Now I'm back to eating meat, and my philosophy is that as long as you appreciate where the food came from, and that something had to die for your hunger, then it is okay. I think that the appreciation of the animal's life and the whole nature's food circle being understood, eating meat can be okay.
(I still don't eat too much meat though.)

I want to be a vegetarian. I went through stages of a few days of no meat, a few times before. I want to be vegetarian. I could if I hade someone to do it with. If Jess went vegetarian, I would have no problem with doing it, too. I donno. I don't do evil eggs or anything, but I would like to go vegetarian. I don't think I'd go vegan tho. I donno. I'm always borderline vegetarian.

I don't really care much for chicken, turkey, roast beef, regular beef, or salmon. a lot of times, I just don't like how certain kinds of meat feel in my mouth or the consistency of it. sweatdrop I'm not a vegetarian however.

I'm a meat eater. I love a good roast rabbit that my gran makes (which she hadn't, in ages sad ) or fried chicken from a restaurant about 20 minutes from here... They're known for their fried chicken. My aunt says it's a crime if you go there and order something else. I agree. It is divine. biggrin
I hear a lot of *ahem* from animal-rights people. I wear a leather jacket. Usually they'd try to scare me by describing what the skinning process looks like. rolleyes What they don't know is that deep down I'm a farm girl. blaugh When I was younger I was sometimes present at... here we call it "koline" when they slaughter a cow or a pig. And when the rabbits were being killed here (we used to have A LOT of rabits. 50+) I'd walk around, asking if I could get a rabbit tail after it's done. I loved rabbit tails, they were so soft... And the food the next day was divine biggrin My gran's roast rabbit. heart When we moved in and I inhabited this room I learned that I can see clearly on my neighbour's yard, where they butcher a pig every few years.
So no, I'm not a vegetarian.
I'm against animal torture though. It isn't fair that if you're gonna kill and eat an animal that it should suffer through it. And it's not fair that you kill an animal just for it's fur.

I totally agree, that's why I love cows so much, they give us so much stuff both when they are alive and dead. I appreciate where my food has come from, and how the animal has been reared and killed and feel that if the majority of the animal goes to waste when it has been killed then it should not have been killed in the first place.

like wow.. i noe that i am not of this guild but this post just caught my eye...so I just hafta say sumthing.
I really don't think that not being Vegan is wrong. Liek so many before me have said, it is naturally your own preference. If it is considered that you are not a true Wiccan just because you eat meat, then the same thing that happened to those dumb Cath's will happen to us Wiccans. people in themselves are different, and hence so their preferences. I know that me personally, I switch up days and such with what I eat.. you know.. just a nice nbalanceing out of everything... That is why we as humans (or subhumas if you perfer) are considered OMNIVORES

Oh, how I hate Christian bashing. rolleyes As if they did nothing good for the world. Who gave you the right to judge someone else's religion? Who are you to call them stupid? Treat others as you wish to be treated. You promote tolerance to the ones who think differently, I think you should put it in practice.
Anyway, maybe a little elaboration would do some good. The question is quite appropriate. The rede does say: "And it harm none, do as you will." And by eating meat you become the reason why it was killed. It's a thing worth discussing... That has absolutely nothing to do with Christianity or any other part of the Roman Catholic Church. They're very free to eat meat, except on special fasting days. Which is quite a small sacrifice to make for your God, don't you think?
