Hello,

Some of you are intrigued by the episodes of xenosaga, and most of you are new to this story. The inspiration and fifth episode of xenosaga is called Xenogears, a game developed in 1998 for the PSONE, launched in America by the defunct squaresoft, now known as Square Enix. The story of Xenogears resembles to the Anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, but with a darker tone. It relates the story of Fei Fong Wong, a man with some innate talents like martial arts and painting that was abandoned in a village and how a very violent and unfortunate event wipe out his village and sent him out to find the truth of his past and the reason the world he lives is in war. I would like to tell you more, but seriously this is one of the best RPG's ever made that you must find and play for yourself. It really explains much of the elements shown in Xenosaga, like the Zohars, the purpose of nephelim, chaos and adam, the future of kos-mos, the outcome of the realians, among other events not explained in the xenosagas.

The reason that square did not made a sequel to xenogears was because they were putting more effort and money to the final fantasy franchise, and fired the Xenogears development team to cut costs, in my opinion a very inane move. A couple of years later the Xenogears development team founded Monolith Software. They were very passionate with the story and gameplay of xenogears, but they couldn't launch a sequel by themselves because Square Enix didn't give or sell them the rights to do so; so they made a game that follows in most ways the xenogears elements but have its own touch, a franchise known as Xenosaga. The xenosaga episodes are very well crafted; but they never achieve the perfection of the storyline and fighting system of xenogears. You may think that I am talking crap with this statements, but if you manage to put your hands in xenogears you will not be dissapointed. The only thing that may put you down about Xenogears are the graphics because they are playstation one caliber, with 2d sprites(for human and small to medium characters and monsters) with 3d(Robots[Gears] and large monsters) in a 3d environment. The story is shown by text with character portraits(varying with their emotions) with an Anime look in all of them. I personally own the game and can tell you it is one masterpiece of gaming.

Wikipedia
Connections to Xenosaga
While Xenogears has never had an official sequel or prequel, many mistake a game developed by Monolith Soft and released by Namco called Xenosaga on the PlayStation 2, to be a prequel. Tetsuya Takahashi was the director and writer for both Xenogears and Xenosaga, however note that Xenosaga is not an official prequel to Xenogears because Square Enix owns the rights to Xenogears.

There is considerable debate within the Xenogears fanbase about how accurately the Xenogears time line in Perfect Works is followed by Xenosaga, which contains similar elements, such as the Zohar, that were introduced in Xenogears.

Official interviews are somewhat vague on the matter, though Tetsuya Takahashi has stated that "It's probably more suitable to say that it follows the direction and style of Xenogears." as well as "Now that we are under a different company, we figured we should start everything from scratch all over again. Though there are familiar faces that serve as important characters in Xenosaga, others are more like self-parodies, so we don't really want Xenogears fans to overreact. Like movies, sometimes you have the director of the movie or friend of the leading actor appearing as cameos, so it's similar to that."[2] Now, however, it is commonly believed that the games have strayed even further with the loss of Soraya Saga and other key members from the project, which people also attribute to the whittling of the series from six games to three.

Thanks for the response preseac. The reason that some of the key staff that created Xenogears and Xenosaga left monolith was because the differences in the direction of the story that some of the developers wanted to make to the game and Soraya Saga, co-creator of Xenogears and active collaborator(Freelance) of monolith felt in discomfort by that course of action. His husband ,Tetsuya Takahashi, co founder of Xenogears and president of monolith fired her, and along with her other employees abandoned the development of Xenosaga episode II. About my copy of Xenogears, I have it yet ,and I played it again. It is as good as the first day xd

I like the similarities purposely put into Xenosaga. Like Abel and Jin's episode 3 outfit looking like Citan's. I only got to play the first little bit of Xenogears and never got further. I stopped at some part where I was in a desert town and had to go with Citan somewhere.

The town you mentioned is Dazil. That town is the first one they visit in their journey. If you only got there means that you only played for about three hours max. Finishing Xenogears with everything take about 90 to 100 hours, and believe me you will need every weapon and armor upgrade for player or gear, and every technique to beat the final bosses a little more easier. Luckily, the game story, minigames, quests and battle system is so excellent and engrossing that you will barely feel tha you spent so much time playing Xenogears. About the similarities: Vanderkaum appears in Xenosaga I, nephelim looks exactly like Mother Sofia, Abel looks like Fei when he was a kid, the gear that abel pilot in Xenosaga III is Called Omega ID, just like ID of Xenogears, jin dresses like citan and even wields a sword like him, most Xenosaga robots look very similar to the Gears models, the Zohars, JR is a very pale imitation of Billy Lee Black of Xenogears(no offense to the JR fans here, but billy is much better because he looks and dresses better, use more weaponry and his techniques kicks @$$, and his past is far more interesting than JR); there are much more similarities than the ones I mentioned here . I wish that in the future square enix join with monolith to make a remastered version of Xenogears for next generation consoles. I am tired of so much final fantasies and Tales of (put inane word here).
