~Kilikana RetiresKana sighs and looks about all the faces of his coworkers. He hadn't had the best of weeks, and it wasn't getting any better. Especially the other day. He'd had to take a ride in an ambulance to go to the nearest hospital because he'd had a heart attack. Thank god he'd lived, well, to him he only really had one reason to live still. He shakes his head and smiles weakly.
"I'm sorry to announce I won't be around much longer. I'll drop in for a visit everyonce in a while, but it's time I retired. I'm getting old and falling apart. I'm leaving the clinic and Head Doctor position to my nephew, Julian." He motions the young hybrid foreward, the small group clapping and congratulating the young doctor. Kilikana hugs the youth with one arm, holding one outwards towards the group. "You've finally become a real doctor, and you need a good job to keep you in the business. So I'm leaving the entire clinic to your name for now."
"But uncle, what about Thomas?" Julian frowns slightly, head wings shuffling slightly.
"Thomas isn't interested in this line of work." Everyone knew that, the boy had seen his fathers death and was out for revenge, spending most of his childhood days training to hunt down his own uncle. The one who killed his beloved father, Seres. Kana took his mates death hard, it was easy to tell. His son tried to do the best for his 'mother' but never could seem to do much.
Seakin Sr., the father of Kilikana and Grandfather to Julian, steps forward and ruffles Julians' hair lovingly, "You'll do great, kid. You take after the very best." He beams proudly at his son, the other merman smiling back.
"Thanks. I know I'll do my best. I promise you all that." Julian scans the faces of his family and friends, brushing a long strand of his silver hair from his face. "I will be the second best you ever had." He laughs softly and looks up at Kana.
"Who knows, you could end up being the best." Kana raises both eyebrows, pointing a finger at the youth, purple eyes dancing.
"No one knows." Julian giggles and heads off to get back to the work he'd been doing previously. Everyone else headed off too, talking amoungst themselves or off on thier own. Seakin Sr. hung back though, still with his son.
"Everything doing fine at the house?" He asks softly. Kana nods, shifting his weight slightly on his cane. "You sure? Thomas called me and told me what happened the other day."
"I had an old friend watch over me. He made sure to get me the best medication they could offer. Don't worry dad, I'll be fine."
"Are you sure about that? Thomas still needs you, even though he may seem like he doesn't."
"I know that father, trust me. It's just hard to be around my boy without seeing his father. He's taken so much after him its' heart breaking."
Seakin sighs and wraps his arms around the younger anthro, holding him close as his son sobs softly into his shoulder. "I'd reassure you with the usual 'Everything is all right.' but we all know that isn't true."
"Couldn't you just say it to make me feel better? Like you used to when I was a kid?"
The taller male chuckles lightly, patting the shorter on the back. "I wish I could, but you aren't a kid anymore, Kilikana. You're a full grown adult with a son and a wonderful career."
"I'm retiring. I'm not allowed to work anymore. Too much stress on my heart." Kana shakes his head and wipes away the tears, glasses slightly lopsided. He sighs and rights them, shaking his head once more. "I gotta get home. Thomas is waiting for me." With that, the merman turns around and heads out, waving to his father just before he opens the door. Seakin waves back, a gentle smile on his face.
"Take it easy, kid. I don't need you leaving Thomas all alone. He's far too young." He mumbles to himself before heading back to the front desk where he worked.
