the whale was already dead people. they had left it dead on the beach till the stench was unbearble.
insted of disposing of the body properly they just blew it up hopeing the majority would go back into the ocean

they did leave it for a long time. it was stinking up the beach and the segals werent eating it really. it was in to big a piece
