What I mean by this thread is: Have you ever gotten a part that you didn't really want but it ended up being one of your favorite roles??
It's happened to me four times already, and I'm barely into my 20's!!!
First, my high school did the stage version of "Get Smart" my junior year. Watching the show as a kid, I had the Maxwell Smart voice down pat. However, I was cast as Agent 44, who is a crybaby in the show. I didn't really appreciate getting overlooked, until I realized that I was the only person who could accurately pull off the "stage cry" at the time. It also added some comic relief, which I always like to do.
Second, I had an audition for "The Music Man, Jr." at a local community playhouse. I obviously wanted the part everybody wants, but was put in as Mayor Shinn. I believe that it was this play where I began my reputation as playing the "moron" of the show. After the performances, people kept saying how they couldn't stop laughing at how I played him.
Third, and to date one of my absolute favorite roles, was the voice of Audrey II in "Little Shop..." Keep in mind that I'm a tenor, not a bass. I honestly didn't think that I could pull off what was done in the movie or the Broadway. However, there were people who thought that I was better than both of them, which obviously I have no opinion on.
Finally, and most recently, I've been cast in "Grease" as a backup dancer and #3 male dance captain (out of 10 guys). Granted, I would have rather wanted Danny or Doody or even Sonny. But, I'm still thrilled to be in this position (especially since I didn't even do the dance audition!!!).
However, the Hand Jive dance is killing my quads.

My very first show: You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. I didn't want a big part because it was my first musical, and I mainly wanted to have a non-pressured summer (it was at camp). However, back then they had a wierd audition schedule so I auditioned with two other people, even though about 15 people in all auditioned. So I was sure, even though the other two people I auditioned with wer girls, that there were guys auditioning. Well...I was wrong. And I was stuck with the role of Charlie Brown. It was terrifying at first because I know I'm not a great singer, and our Sally and Schroeder (also a girl) were amazing singers, but by the end it was an awesome experience. Even if I do still hate the song 'The Kite' with a passion...
Two years later in the same camp we did Godspell, which I wasn't sure about at all. From everything that I had heard, it was a 'wierd show' with only a couple of good songs. During auditions, all the girls sang a few bars from 'Bless the Lord', 'Day by Day' and 'Turn Back'. I really liked 'Bless the Lord', but my other friend got that song. I was 'stuck', as I thought, in a trio for 'By My Side'. But now it's turned into one of my favorite songs, and I feel really lucky that I got to sing that particular song. ^_^

The Queen in A.A. Milne's "The Ugly Duckling". I hated the role. I hated the COSTUME. Shiny and white and stage do not go together. I looked pregnant, I swear. I, of course, wanted to be the princess. But I was the queen.
I played the hell out of the Queen, though. And I got a few laughs, which I never really tend to do anymore. I'm typecast as the b***h. Or the frail loner who dies. I love getting laughs.

Intriguing, on both accounts.

Does it count if you play a role you didn't want, but enjoyed doing it, but you STILL hate the role even afterwards? Because I have two of those. Danny in Grease. I HATE Grease, and I hate Danny (in case you haven't noticed, I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to theatre sweatdrop ). I still do. But I had SO much fun playing that part. It gave me a chance to prove that I really CAN act, as I got Danny to be the masculine, greasy, annoying character that he's supposed to be. I'm not a masculine person. At all. Another is a random chorus part in Cinderella. Now, I don't dislike this role, I just don't care about it. But, at the ball, my friend and I were both random chorus people. So we had fun with it. Random dance moves of doom, conversations behind a fan, making fun of the prince (because the boy could NOT act for s**t). Big fun.

I didn't really want to play Bazzard in the Mystery of Edwin Drood (mostly because I am horrible at playing men, especially vocally), but I enjoyed playing the melodramatic butler in the end (even if I wasn't voted the murderer [and I worked so hard on my confession song too crying ]) It was also fun playing an opium junkie in the same musical.

Were you picked as the detective? Almost every show I've seen he gets picked as the detective.

Yes, but the director cut out the "Out on a Limmerick" song that a character sings if they are detective so I didn't get a song -_-

All I did was walk onstage during Puffer's monologue where she announces who Datchery is and when she announced it was Bazzard I took off my detective hat and bowed (but I did get to wear a great coat)

In my drama club we have a crew of playwrites (I'm one of them) that write the plays we are to perform. Anyway, I got casted into the worst one of all, it was terribly written, corny, made absolutely no sense whatsoever and...to put it quite bluntly it would make soap actors want to vomit. I thought my teachers were punishing me, I was so furious, than our director came in and I don't know how she did it, but she made the role extremely fun--I enjoyed myself so much I couldn't believe it was the same play XD
