Has anyone else noticed how Japan has become a huge trend now? I see kids everywhere trying to speak japanese and talking about how they're going to move to Japan. Also the fashion is becoming a trend. I see more and more people claiming to be lolitas and they talk about how they want to be "those people" in harajuku. It's annoying, it's not just a few people it's almost my whole school that's like this. In addition to thier new found trendy love for Japan they have also picked up the trend of hating America. Has anyone else noticed this? Is it just me that feels this way? sad

Yep I have noticed this. I really hate people like that. I study Japanese because I want to and feel it will be useful someday. i.e. I'm thinking about being a Japanese translator. I'm not saying that I will see it through, but I hope to. Anyway. yeah it is annoying that poeple would treat a culture as a trend. pffft screw them.

Kids will always be kids... and Japan is just the latest pop culture phenom. Eventually it will evolve into something else.
Remember that there was also huge boom in the 80's during the bubble economy era. I actually think it's a little more positive now, since people are actually learning Japanese because of their interest in Japan, instead of just to make money or meet Japanese girls, (although there will always be that kind of person.)
The problem lies in the fact that the "Japan" people love is not the real Japan. It's just a modern form of Orientalism. Hopefully, though, this admiration will eventually lead to actual cultural communication and understanding. Probably, it will just phase out, though.
As for kids in your school... I guess I don't know what to say about that. When I was in middle school and high school, anime was only starting to boom, and the "Japan craze" hadn't hit yet. The Pokemon generation was a few years younger. So, I can't give you much advice other than "我慢してね."

dont worry. once you get old and die off, there probably wont be another japanese culture craze.
i always wondered why so many fall in love with japan, a religious theory: reincarnates of war dead.
but thats not my theory. my theory is simply: wEiRd.

I'm pretty sure it's due to the popularity of anime growing. Of course, a bunch of people eventually realize they like Japan for its culture more than because of anime, and those are the people who will continue to like it for the rest of their lives, while the anime kids are going to realize (or will they?! Sometimes I really don't know...) that anime does not define Japanese culture.

yeah, it's just so annoying when people who have openly said things such as "Why would ANYONE ever want to learn japanese!" go to "OMG! I LOVE japanese! I can say NekO!"

At least the 'harajuku' and 'lolita' will give up soon enough. Odds are they won't follow it through enough to get into Japan. It'll just wash over, like that yo-yo craze a while back.
I'm glad there aren't people like that where I live. No one here seems interested except me.

I don't really know that many people who are into the Japanese culture craze where I live. To me, it seems underground, and only a few people I know are into it.

Super Turkey, do you mean kids in the U.S? If so, then maybe i have the reason why they react that way...Maybe it's because they are obsessed with the japanese manga or anime. blaugh Manga and anime become very popular in the U.S lately... xp

I just watched this show on television called "Trading Spouses" or something similar. They get two contrasting families, and make the wives switch households for a week or two weeks. The daughter of one of the families wanted to go to Japan to start a Japanese rock band, and she kept saying "like". Like, "lyk".
I don't really like this whole Japanese fad thing. I don't even know why people would obsess over Japan this way, maybe it's the 4KIDS animes?

But I wouldnt mind visiting Japan again ! XD. 2 months till japan.. every 3 months or so, I leave this boring state. Here.. not as outgoing, it's hard to settle in a place where no asian should be.. But, Japan is awesome, the styles and uniques are much different.
