Also known as: Bean Nighe, Fairy Woman, ben síde(Old Irish)
Species: Humanoid death bringer
Native land: Ireland and Scotland
Habitat: Land
Description: Usually decribed as a women with long hair in a white dress, with a silver comb which it uses to brush back it's hair. But sometimes it's outfit changes to a green or black dress with a grey cloak.
Notable abilities: Supposedly an omen of death, they sing or scream at the hour of death underneath a window.
Notable disabilities: Supposedly only able to scream at these 5 Irish Familys. The O'Neills, the O'Briens, the O'Connors, the O'Gradys and the Kavanaghs. Intermarriage has since extended this list.
Dispelling and Disarming: In most RPGs, banshees can be destroyed using holy water or magical spells. A powerful priest can destroy it using a cross or other holy symbol.
Other: The comb banshees supposedly carried started a new legend. If you spot a comb lying on the ground in Ireland or Scotland, don't pick it up. Banshees and Mermaids place them there to lure unsuspecting humans and spirit them away!
There are several versions, and I'll try and get information on each of them if I can.

Name: Bean Sidhe
Species: Humanoid Death Bringer
Native land: The Irish version of the Banshee
Habitat: Usually found in caves (O_o)
Describtion: Wears a green or black dress with a grey cloak and has red eyes from crying so often.
Notable Abilities: Hunts all living objects in a certain area, killing them off one by one. Animals are usually killed by a simple touch where as humans are stalked and their souls sucked out of their bodies. This however is an exaggeration since they just sing to help spirits cross over.
Disabilities: Taken as a bad omen, but they really just help trapped souls.
Dispelling and Disarming: Don't try it. Bean Nighe are not really dangerous, they just help souls bound to the earth by a family member's love or attachment.
Other: If you catch a Bean Sidhe while it is singing, it has to tell you who it is singing for.

Well, the banshee is close to the Women in White that they had in the first episode. They're not exactly the same
WiW: Preys on the unfaithful Ban: Sings for the dying
But they are mistaken for eachother alot. sweatdrop When I saw the first episode, I thought it was on banshees when they showed the slip of paper saying 'Woman in White'.

Well yah... I suppose they would if they both wear white dresses.. So I'm a bit confused... the banshee's.. do they steal or capture souls? From the descriptions it sounds like they know when death is coming for a person and they wait for it... They don't sound so bad to me... and they're pretty..

They cross people over is what I gather. So they are alot like reapers. They are not evil or good, but just there. One entity to help the common man.

I didn't realise that banshee's help cross over - I thought they just screamed as an omen to the one person who was dying and sometimes only that person could hear it (kinda like the hellhounds I guess eek ).
But yeah, didn't think they helped anybody after screaming (or singing depending on what source you fallow).
Random: Banshee's are my favorite "supernatural" being. I'd love for it to be on the show but as stated earlier - they (the producers, etc.) probably feel comfortable enough with the "Woman in White" episode.
