So I got Final Fantasy 11 yesterday and already have about eleven hours of playtime.

I was pretty impresed and I'm still impressed. I thought this game would suck balls but it doesn't. It feels old-school yet like a whole new adventure, which is always nice. There are many good changes to the system.

For one, characters that you can talk to are listed with a talk bubble over their heads. It makes sense that not EVERYBODY in the town has something to say, and it feels much more realistic. You don't have to pass through town conversing with every little street member, wondering if he has anything important to say.

The battle system takes some getting used to but it's great. You basically just give your characters special auto-commands and assignments and watch them play out. For example, you can create a macro (they're called 'gambits' but they're really just computer macro programs) to make your character cast Protect on himself every time it's down, or you can make a macro to sniff out if an enemy has Protect on HIMSELF, and then Dispel that.

There's a lot of versatility here you just have to be smart with it and not overdo it or try to be too lazy. (if you try to auto every little thing the game will punish you for it, it just can't be done since a human being will always be smarter than a computer) It doesn't make sense setting up lots and lots of magic macros, since it would waste too much MP otherwise. Sometimes you're better off just controlling characters manually.... the game has just the right amount of challenge. It was so boring in other final fantasy games when you didn't have to think about anything, or worry about dying. It's not the case here....and hardcore Final Fantasy fans will love it.

The gambit/macro system just makes 'trash mob' fights a lot simpler and less tedious. There's still strategy involved, especially when you get to boss fights, it just feels like you're spending more time 'playing' rather than surfing through a bunch of menus.

PARTY SET-UP:

The game is kind of biased towards healing and tanks though. Through experiment it seems like the game is a lot harder if you don't have a Warrior type and a White mage in the party. The person with the highest armor and HP should be the leader of the party and it should grab the monster's attention. Then, it will take the blunt of it's attacks while the healer heals him. You can take on many lesser enemies this way, since Warriors are the toughest to kill. You can create 'hybrid bulids' though, like you can have a backup healer or backup magic damage user....this is handy for fights that take a toll on your MP. You have a lot of options building your characters.

It's hard to heal people who aren't Warriors though, since they take damage faster and quicker, and they might die before you get a heal off otherwise. But fear not, you can heal people much quicker with potions, but they're best used for emergenices since gill is in short supply in this game.... and you have to actually think about what you buy, another fun plus.

(that's all for now I might continue this later with another post)

Here's how I'm setting up my party so far:

Vaan: Vaan's my white mage since I have a white mage complex and pretty much all heroes of the story are white mages, anyway... even if they're not the main leaders. I'm also making him a Black Mage as his secondary role. So I guess he's more accurately described as a 'red mage' but I still think of him as a white mage so there. wink So far he's the only pure caster of the group.

Penelo: Haven't played much with her...but I'm making her a Warrior/White Mage.... it's fun, since most girls in Final Fantasy are usually the caster type. The game is stereotypical though and defaults her to being a sole caster, but I stopped that from happening.

Fran: Archer/Black Mage. She'll be my main long-ranged damage specialist.

Balthier: Archer/Time Mage. I think.

Basche: Warrior/Green Mage.

I wasn’t very happy when I heard the battle system was changing. I thought, if they change this huge factor then it really isn’t the FF I’m so in love with. Well I preordered the game, the collector’s addition, and then when it came out I bought the limited addition strategy guide. Any’hoo I played it and I’m in love with it. Though I have some different views than Sam.

I raise all of my characters in White Magic, though some are more proficient in it, and I ignore all techniques that I have except for: Steal, Libra (Scan), and occasionally Charge (gimme back MP, or takes it all away). This way everyone can heal without relying on just one character or Potions, which becomes a burden when you want to buy your characters new and better weapons, but HAVE to be able to heal them. I do have two characters that are better spellcasters though, which will be explained later. I always use a Full-Mage as my leader character, unless I’m simply running around a previously beaten terrain leveling up. To remedy them being attacked all the time, I have acquired the spell “Decoy” that I cast upon there character with the highest HP in my group.

I use all of my characters so I can swap them at will and it won’t destroy my. I’m over 40 hours into the game and only level 29-30 and not even half ways through it. My levels pretty much average, so I’m okay ^^

Characters:
Vaan- He’s a warrior using a spear, because the best weapon in the game is the Zodiac Spear, which is unobtainable without looking at a walkthrough or something of the sort. Anyways he’s pretty good with good Light armor, and uses white magic. So far he has no Espers.

Ashe- She’s one of my mages, because she and Penelo have better Mage stats then everyone else. Her weapon is the Katana, which uses her Magic and Strength power to determine damage instead of just strength. She wears Heavy armor and Mystic Hats to keep both stats above the rest. I’ve mainly raised her in Black Magic and White Magic, making her a potent character. She has Belias, the fire Esper.

Penelo- My UBER Mage ^^ She uses a crossbow or a staff/rod, all only Mystic armor. This makes her regular attacks weaker than Ashe’s (which can suck with limited MP) but higher magic strength, making her a slightly better healer and spellcaster. Anyways she’s diverse in all forms of magic, meaning she can cast Drain, Protect, Haste, Fira, and Curaja ^^ She’s my favorite character to use. She has Madeus, the ice Esper.

Fran- She is my favorite female character, though I dunno why since I made Penelo a much better Mage. She’s a warrior, using her Bow to do long range damage, and also healing from the back ranks. She can also use some decent Black Magic too. Actually, she’s usually the first character to cast Esuna or Raise on anyone ^^ She’s no less than any of my warriors, having the same HP and MP, plus always being the first to gain another Quickening (limit break).

Brasch- He’s not my favorite character, though probably only because I they introduced him as evil, even though he isn’t. It stinks too, cause Rex was cute ^^ Anyways he uses the sword right now, and will use Great Swords when they become available. He uses heavy armor of coarse, and I believe I took away his healing gambits, though he’s capable of some decent white magic.

Balthier- I’m keeping an eye on him, cause my guess is that he’s actually Vayne’s brother who was supposed to be killed, but got away >.> Just my suspicion though, with some clues given by the storyline that could be misinterpreted. Anyways he’s a warrior with a gun, who tends to do the most damage because although guns “sound” weak, they ignore defense so even if your opponent is super strong against physical attacks, it doesn’t matter ^^ His armor is Light and he’s diverse in white magic.

I love the spell Decoy, I have it an auto-cast even though it seems to miss a lot. Right now all my characters are becoming kind of equal though because I'm getting A LOT of lp. Not so much with the exp though. Leveling is still a bit slow.

I will be getting FF III for Christmas (if I can wait that long)

I'm a FF-aholic!!!

Oh guess what! Did you hear that one of the main character's name in FF III is Arc? NO s**t!!! THEY LOVE ME!!!

I AM SO GONNA MAKE HIM A WHITE MAGE!!! YAY!

Now only if there was the b***h Scarlet in the game, but I doubt it. Oh well I'll have to use my imagination.

LoL FFIII and FFXI are the only ones I don't have... But I hear FFIII is like a remake of the second one or whatever.

My Final Fantasy XII characters are pretty evened out. I use all of them, I'm 40-50 hours into the game and only LvL 30ish... I'm not even half ways through the gaem either ^^ This makes me so happy. LoL one kid at school even said "I'm 50 hours into the game and Ashe ain't my b***h yet. So either this isgonna be a 100 hour game, or it's s**t." ^^ Too bad that there is NO love relation between the main characters Ashe and Vaan, as one would expect. I mean seriously, the woman's husband JUST died two years ago, and she's seeing his soul everywhere. I don't think she's getting over him too soon... Penelo and Vaan have a better chance of getting together... and off topic I'm seriously wondering how old Fran is, ever since Vaan made an a** out of himself and asked her.

Heh that was pretty funny, but to be honest I really don't like Fran. I see the appeal of why other people like her, but I just think she's vacant-headed and a bit stupid. (sorry! you can flame me now)

I don't know what's the big appeal about Balthier either, I know people like him because he says witty things, but he's bit of an a*****e. Then again people like that I guess, 'the bad-a**' but I just think his voice can be condescending and annoying. He's hot though, so I guess it's okay!

I like Penelo, though she doesn't have many lines or much story other than 'being Vaan's friend.' I liked her in the very beginning though, as I like bossy, female leads. (for stereotypical gay man ness). I dunno about any of the characters really, I just like the gameplay and the story is alright too. There does need to be more characterization in the game, yes.

I would say Ashe is my favorite, but for some reason she's still like lvl 17! I haven't really leveled the other characters yet...perhaps I should work on that.

My three main characters (Penelo, Vaan and Balthier) are lvl 52 about. BUT I really like Basch a lot better than Balthier, but for some reason I didn't choose him...Basch reminds me of my first crush, and Balthier reminds me of the a*****e guys I slept with that I didn't really like at all...yet I picked them anyway!

I would choose Basch over Balthier but that would mess up the game balance too much, and I don't think you can refund your license points and spend them elsewhere.... =/

LVL 52 eek omg that's a lot. I guess if I only leveled up three characters I might be in the fourties... How far are you again? *Needs to play that game again, but every time I try some one steals the TV with the PS2.* I live with evil people.

I haven't played much either. But I'm towards the last leg of the game kinda, I have the last two big chunks of game to go through. I'm doing a lot of side-quests right now sooo I guess in totality I'm about 60% completed with the game. That's a pretty accurate number, I think.

I just got Reddas umm the big black macho dude in my party a little awhile ago.

And yeah I only leveled up three characters.... I think I'm going to start over again from scratch though because I really like Basch. =/
