    Name ][ Phillipe LaBauve

    Age ][ 52 (died at age 22)
    Height ][ 5' 10"

Description ][ Phillipe's mother was a Creole slave, his father a white slave owning Frenchman. As a mulatto his skin is a warm caramel color, his features are a mix of both European and African, striking and angular.

Hair ][His hair, gone white postmortem, is shoulder length and braided, pulled back into a high spiky ponytail.
Eyes ][ Pale brown when he appears normal. They turn a day-glow sickly yellow in the moonlight.
Body Type ][ Phillipe's body is long and lean, like a runner's and well toned from years of labor. His hands are long, thin fingered. Overall his movements are deft and articulate.
Speach ][ His speach is a combination of Acadian french and heavily accented English.

Personality ][ Phillipe is quite personable, now that he's free of his previous life. On first impression he'll appear like an absurdly old fashioned gentleman. He enjoys company, especially that of women. Phillipe flirts more than he means to, it's just in his nature. That being said, men are far more likely to catch sight of the darker parts of Phillipe's psyche as he doesn't feel any need to pull punches around them. His temper has a shorter fuse than most, he's set off easily and has resorted to fistfights when angered enough.

Interests ][ Phillipe has always had a fondness of reading, a nice quiet and intellectual hobby. He enjoys some cooking and fiddle playing. He has found a kind of soothing peace in blacksmithing as well. When inspired he'll spend hours over a forge on personal projects.
Religion ][ Phillipe once called himself a Christian.
Hates ][ He despises know-it-alls. Anyone who treats him as less than an equal sets off his anger.
Weakness ][ He has a great deal of personal pride combined with self-loathing. Because of this he has difficulty accepting criticisms or instruction. He also tends to get blindsided by women. He looks upon them as innocent and helpless creatures that need protection. Dispite his gentlemanly behavior he can be an unintentional cad. He'll push his luck if he thinks a woman will let him.

Fears ][ For as much as he hates being one of the unliving he fears death far too much to take his own life. The prospect of the afterlife...or lack thereof, in his case, chills his him to his core. His Christian faith, once a comfort, only causes him dread and guilt.

Skills ][ Phillipe speaks Cajun/Acadian French fluently, common for the period he lived in. He became skilled at casual fiddle playing and fairly basic creole cooking. His primary job on the plantation was smithing. As a blacksmith he handled shoeing, nails, barrel bars, wrought iron and even some blades. He has skills in smelting and casting as well, another aspect of blacksmithing.

"tournez la page de votre histoire"

World ][ Type B - A mimicry of New Orleans in the 1700-1800s. Ripe with slavery, the steam engines, death and in some cases rebirth. The world is a dark reflection of ours where voodoo and death magic lurk in the dark alleys and swamps. Humanity strives to survive along side the mythological and supernatural. Lycanthropes thrive in the deep north of Acadia and Northern America as well as Europe, vampires have only just begun to migrate to the 'new world'....yet the spirits and creatures of Native America thrive, protecting the wilds and endangering all those that hope to 'tame' the wilds of the West. The mysteries and magics of the dark tropical islands and jungles are thick throughout the gulf coast, merging with the evil the Europeans brought with them....

History ][ His mother was a slave, his father the older brother of the plantation owner. During his time there he served the household, even after his father's untimely demise, and lived to 22. After being lynched over a scandal within the house he was raised from the dead by a mysterious 'benefactor.' Phillipe considers the Cirque to be a sort of rescuer from his post-life slavery.

Phillipe was born to a Creole slave woman named Marie LaBauve. His father was a white Creole whose brother owned a plantation outside of the city New Orleans. Growing up, Phillipe was well educated in both in scholarly pursuits and as a workman. As he had a calming way with skittish horses so he was trained to shoe them as a blacksmith. His father rarely invested free time in him.On Phillipe’s 18th birthday both he and his mother were emancipated. His mother began a tailoring service in the city but Phillip remained behind to continue serving as a blacksmith on the plantation…..a decision that later led to his death.

the unknown

The plantation owner’s daughter, Caludette, took a fancy to her slightly older cousin, Phillipe. They fell in love and carried on their illicit affair in secret. Their relationship was eventually found out and in a fit of rage Claudette’s father had Phillipe drug out of his home and beaten, with every intention of hanging him. In desperation Claudette turned a farmhand’s pistol upon herself in a dramatic bluff trying to get them to stop. A farmhand tried to wrest the gun away from her and she accidentally shot herself. Phillipe was hung without mercy and left to dangle in the woods.

It was in that deep cold night that his body was stolen away. Days later Phillipe rose again, bound to the will of another man…

Note ][ Phillip's state as a zombie gives him no special benefits other than a powerful resistance to death. As in, he cannot be killed by any ordinary means and he will live until someone makes him stop living. The man who created him did imbue his gris-gris with a resistance to fire so he could continue his work as a blacksmith but nothing more.

... ][ There is an intense and unnatural energy that surrounds his body. Those near him who are sensitive to such energies may find themselves uncomfortable.

"Wi, mo pale kreyol."

Creole-French in the New Orleans area is somewhat difficult to research. It's a jumble of accents and classic french, some Hatian, others spanish, even more heavily influenced by the classic southern drawl. I apologize in advance for my horrendous use of the language but I promise I am researching hard and if there are spelling errors some of it is due to Acadian French being unusual and others are due to my ineffectual skill at languages.

Here are some common Creole-French phrases used in conversation:

      Hello Bonjou
How are you? Koman sa va?
How do you feel? Vou san vou- mem byen?
      What’s wrong? Sa ena?
      What’s happening?/What’s up? Sa k a prife?
How’s it going? Sa tchob byen
      I’m okay. Mo bon
      And you. E to
      Good-bye. Adyeu
      Goodday Bonjou
(some say Bonjou when saying good-bye)
