Whats your opinion of the Pimsleur programs? If you have used them or know of them.I'm thinking of getting on for German and was curious if it was worth it. sweatdrop

I know almost nothing about them, but I've been greatly tempted to try them out. They'll spam you, if you like. I actually did sign up for it, and it's ignorable enough razz It's scary how they practically beg--it makes me wonder if it really works or if they're desperate to sell. The thing is, I'd like to learn to write along with the system, though I need LOTS of work with speaking (Russian, btw)

I would like to note that that colour of green is very hard to read on a white background. neutral

Also, I don't remember if it was pimsleur or rosetta stone (probably rs), but one of them offers an online thingy. I'm willing to bet it's a ripoff, based on the hours listed on their information package. Yeah, it was probably RS. Anyways... good luck? pirate

I've tried the audio program. Thank god I checked it out of the library instead of wasting money on it. It was painfully slow, agonizingly simple, and completely lacking in terms of vocabulary. Three half hour lessons and I think they used all of two verbs and one grammatical principle.

Thanks for telling me, because I was almost going to get one, after hearing about learning a language in 10 days...(although I knew that was too good to be true...)

It isn't the most useful program, but good to have if you want to get the pronounciation correct, and I found it fun.

I sound like the odd one out, but to me, i like it. i have it for french. and you have to really listen to it more than once. [agreed french isn't the best for just audio, but book as well] but for german, if you can pronouce the alphabet, the right way, you can speak german. for grammer i suggest Barrons grammer book. its to me pocket sized. i like to take notes and study from that.

put the two and two together and it might help.

I actually really liked it. I have it for Japanese. It teaches you useful stuff and really helps it become part of your long-term memory. I understand where yall are coming from, but I thought it was a good method. It seemed like this one was the most effortless(I know that learning a language is NEVER effortless, but this one was easiest to remember) and even though it doesn't teach you a whole bunch of stuff it really helps you remember what you have learned, and I think if you really stick to it you will learn your language.

I think that it is a great program if you use the comprehensive version of it, the express course (The one that only teaches you 10 sentences) is supposed to be just a demo. The comprehansive set is very much worth it and most major languages come with three volumes of the somprehensive. They are just really expensive per volume.

It still makes no difference it's still extremely slooooooooooow!
Try the expensive 'Mastering (insert language here)' It's supposed to be really efficient and you can become fluent in it too!

Pimsleur is great. I mean really. Probably the best audio-learning program I've ever used.

Go Pimsleur! biggrin

Bullshit mastering(insert language here) is efficient. It is way worse and I have tried it, I do not like their teaching method at all.

I've known people who got the best out of it by using that, along with internet courses, Rosetta Stone, and native speakers(via internet).

Apparently, it's not the best to go by itself. (And according to my brother and his friend, it sucks.)

I agree with you about that, you need more than just one thing to get the most out of your language studying.

All I got out of their online demo was a few words in German... but I remember them, so I guess all that repetition was okay.

They have the course in Russian at my new college's library, so as soon as I'm moved in, I'm pouncing it before anyone else has a chance to twisted At least, I plan to...

You have to keep in mind, I think, that these programs are designed to be redundant. sweatdrop It's how they drill the words into your braaaaain.
