It was a bleak night in the ebon-spotted stallion's eyes... but so were the last number of nights since his heart had been crushed, and he'd been wandering alone in the darkness of the forest. Golden hues were half-lidded and dimmed as they focused disinterestedly on the dirt beneath his hooves, a dejected sigh befalling his lips as he came to an abrupt halt in a clearing he knew all too well. Pain flooded his heart in recognition as he turned away from the sight of the place where it had all ended, lifting his head to glare defiantly at the starry night sky above.

It all seemed so unfair... so unjust, and yet, there was nothing that anyone could do to make it right. The circumstances were bad for everyone, and what came about was not simply an effort to outcast him- although this was hard to keep in mind at times. He'd never wished more for the company of a friend than he did at this moment; as much as he loathed to admit it, he was lonely and heartsick.

A bright peridot star appeared to streak across the sky. One would wonder if they were seeing things. Oh that was something, just not a star. It was a young Wind Soquili taking her midnight flight. Known as Myoa to most, the Peridot of the Wind danced her joy. It was a beautiful night, calm, serene, with it's breezes of mysterious shadows. It was a waste to not fly this bright, and wonderous evening.

Myoa lightly and smoothly flipped in the air, becoming a twinkling blur to curious eyes below. She was happy, just from the simple joy of flying. Wish upon a bright green star, my friend...and let me share my joy with you. A whisper on the wind carried a young, and musical voice to the ears below. Who would hear Myoa's prayer?

Startled out of his thoughts at the sight of a brief flash of viridian flooding his vision, the stallion blinked a few times in confusion, then relaxed in understanding as the whimsical mare's voice reached his ears. Miss Myoa. It had been some time since he'd seen her, and he was glad to know she was well-- but try as he might, he couldn't force out a smile. Brief visions of azure clouded his thoughts as he wandered across the empty fields, his steps growing heavier in his dejection as he came to a halt below the peridot mare.

Amazingly, he managed a half-hearted smile for her as she danced on the air, finding himself wishing he had her energy or enthusiasm, and promptly doubting he would ever feel that happy or elated again. "Good evening, Miss Myoa... it's good to see you are well."

At first glance, Myoa knew something was wrong. Shadow's smile was...forced, and rather late in the arrival. His hooves, normally leaping with pride, were being dragged along, and last, but most importantly, Shadow's eyes were dim with depression....with heartache. Heartache....Luna had baskets....oh no. A flurry of thoughts rushed into Myoa's mind, all basically meaning the same thing.

"Shadow...what happened?" She dropped before him, then nosed his head up high. "...Who are you?"

"Who am I?" he graced her with a bitter chuckle, letting golden hues slide closed to hide his grief as he pondered how to answer her question. "I am Shadow... one who's pride and dignity no longer matter, who's heart has deserted him in his hour of need." A crooked smile adorned his features, one that had nothing to do with happiness, and everything to do with his heartache and hollowness. He let his eyes slide open again to look upon the green mare, and a hint of gratitude shone through the dim yellow irises towards her... he was grateful for her presence, at least. "I take it you heard about miss Luna's new family?"

It wasn't just that she had gone off to start a family without him... no, he could have forgiven her that... but that she didn't love him, didn't want him was heartbreaking... and that she actually feared him... that was what crushed him.

"You would've forgiven her for her family. You could've been a godfather of sorts. However, something else happened." Her emerald eyes drilled into Shadow. Her voice was matter-of-fact, but not without understanding his sorrow. She really did feel bad for him, and she desperately wanted to help with. However, couldn't help an invisable problem. "Shadow...what happened?"

Gently, she nudged Shadow into laying down. "Look at the stars, are they not shining tonight? Who's to say they aren't shining for you, in your hour of need? Who's to say your heart floated up to them, to better help you? Who's to say that isn't your pride, and happiness watching over you? But then again, who's to say it is?" Again, she stared deeply at Shadow. "My dear friend...that power is yours."

He followed suit at her gesture, pausing to consider her words as he nodded and conceeded her point, although the grief and sadness didn't disappear from his golden eyes. At her question, they narrowed in anguish as he struggled to answer. "She..." he could barely bring himself to say it, it hurt so much... "she fears me, miss Myoa... she..." he swallowed thickly here, trying to force back the lump developing in his throat. Although it was true that his pride and dignity no longer mattered, he'd be damned if he would cry in front of another mare. "She thought I would hurt her and her foals..."

He had to pause here to calm himself with a few deep breaths, reliving that last conversation with the cerulean mare all over again, and struggling to contain the liquid threatening to spill from his eyes. "Why?" he asked her, rhetorically perhaps, although he wanted to know what the answer was. "When have I ever given her a reason to fear me? I would never hurt her... I've never even gotten mad at her..." he choked here, shutting his eyes briefly to regain control over his raging emotions.

Myoa's heart broke at her friend's anguish. "Shadow...please don't be embarressed to cry in front of me." It made it worse that he was too proud to show his emotions. "Go ahead and vent on me...release all of your emotions. I cannot help you if you're bottling up your feelings."

She paused for a second, thinking about his question. Sure, she had ideas, but who knew if they were anywhere close to the truth. For one, Myoa decided, Shadow needs to be able to think clearly. Perhaps this is a misunderstanding? ...Slim chance of that.

He was hesitant, and it showed, but he trusted her with his life, so eventually, he gave in. Lowering his head until it rested upon a petite shoulder, he let himself go... and for the first time since he was a foal, he wept. At any other point, in front of anyone else, it would have been shameful... but the only other time he had allowed himself to cry was when he watched over a pregnant Luna, and she was dead to the world.

Shadow was hesitant, but he gave in. That was good. Myoa almost smiled. Almost. "There, there..." She whispered, just like a mother tending an injured foal. "Just cry...you'll feel better, like a weight's been lifted off your shoulders." His waterfall of tears seemed to be drops of sorrow, sinking straight to Myoa's heart. She stayed rigid with soft encouragement, until Shadow's heaves started slowing down. "Is that all?" She wondered aloud, carefully tentatiive.

He chuckled despite himself through his tears, a strange mixture of sobbing and laughter as he lifted his head from her shoulder, eyes swelled and bloodshot. "If I were to cry until there were no tears left, miss Myoa, we would be here all night... but thank you, I do feel a little better now." He managed a halfhearted smile at her as he tried to calm himself then, voice hoarse from his weeping. With a rueful sniff, he let out another soft sigh. The terrible gnawing ache on his soul had lessened, but instead of comfort and relief, there was only emptiness. "It still hurts..." he muttered softly, more to himself than anything else.

"But it doesn't hurt with pain. It hurts because there's nothing." Myoa's voice dropped to a whisper. "I know the feeling...all too well." Her past played like a video in her mind. However, that was all over now, over and done. She smiled, encouragingly. "Would you like to talk about it, now, or do you still want to vent?"

Her mind whirlled with possiblities. Does Luna really fear Shadow? That was her main focus. Maybe she's just uncomfortable...I know she had feelings for him, at least the last time I saw her. She sighed softly to herself. I just don't know....but I don't want to make Shadow relive his pain.

He nodded his agreement to her insights, although he wasn't entirely sure that all the pain was because there was nothing. Yes, he hurt because he was empty, but he also still felt the pain of her rejection... still saw her shake as she gazed at him fearfully, and just the remembrance brought tears to his eyes again. Taking deep breaths to quell the urge to give into his emotions again, he closed his eyes for a brief moment before opening to focus on Myoa once again. He offered her a grateful smile- a genuine one, this time- and bowed his head briefly. "Thank you for putting up with me, miss Myoa... I appreciate it more than you know," he spoke softly. "I guess..." he paused again, heaving a heavy sigh as he closed his eyes in helpless grief. "I just don't understand what went wrong. What did I do? Did I take too long in trying to tell her?"

Myoa returned the smile. "You are a friend in need, are you not?" She sighed herself, and gently patted Shadow with her wing. "I hate to do this to you, but...please tell me exactly what happened between you two." Shaking her head, she continued, "I don't know either...but I do believe that she has, or at least, had, feelings for you..."

She sighed again. "Shadow, did she actually say she feared you?"
