Earth had expanded to the point where technology had allowed them to travel between the stars.
As the ship neared the nth star on their exploration list, their ship shuddered and their engines stopped. The lights turned off and the gravity failed. In fact, everything electronic had stopped.
They puzzled over this and couldn't get them working. Then, someone, who just happened to be looking out the window at the time, noticed that a ship was approaching. Except that what looked like a dragon was pulling it along. It docked and the hatch was blasted open.
And the crew of the human ship was faced with humans. Casting magic at them.
They were taken to the nearest populated world where an explanation was given. Science didn't work here. At least, in this part of space. It did in their's though. In fact, they had crossed a boundry between the regions, into the magic region.
They adapted and returned home, using a dragon and then their own engines. Once they returned to earth, they were told to go out again and find as many regions as possible and report back.
