As much as she had accepted what was happening to her, there were some days when Chana clung to her humanity with teeth and nails. Today was one of those days, and it found her on the shore of the lake, the village a gray mass behind her, wrestling with earthworms. More specifically, the beaver was trying to manuever the earthworms onto her hook. She hadn't realized until now just how much her hands had changed...and she hoped it wouldn't get even harder to manipulate things.
However, fishing was a time-honored way to comepletely distract oneself. The beaver also wanted to determine which method of fishing was more effective. Thus far, the scales balanced in favor of letting the beaver inside her do the work, especially as she dropped her worm yet again with an wordless exclamation.

Shenzi was at the lake again; after discovering it the other day from her meeting with Newt, she had decided to take a swim. She hadn't seen a pool anywhere, so she figured it'd be as good a place as any. In a mismatched bathingsuit, she was idly floating in the water when she noticed someone else there, fishing apparently. Taking in a breath and ducking under the water, Shenzi came up a few feet away from the woman, wiping water from her eyes before looking at her. And sinking back under. Coming back up again, she grinned sheepishly. "Hullo there."

The beaver had been ignoring the lake, for the most part, while struggling with the worms. But when a woman popped up right in front of her--!
"Whoa!" she replied, a bit stunned, dropping the worm into the lake. "Oh...damn it...." the beaver muttered, glaring at the spot where the invertebrate had disappeared. She shook her head and looked up at the woman again.
"Erm...hello..." she said, as she finally realized why the woman had looked slightly wrong. This person was still fully human! Lucky girl.

Shenzi looked under the water at what dropped; a worm. Bait. Darting her hand forward, she made a grab for it, half hoping she missed. And she did. Making a face, she gave the woman an apologetic look, trying to ignore the animal-features.
"Ehh, I'm Shenzi. Sorry about the awkward first impression." The blueberry said, laughing sheepishly before holding her hand out. "And you are?"

"I'm Chana," the beaver replied, grasping Shenzi's hand for a couple firm shakes. She smiled a bit apologetically and continued. "Some days I think we should make a 'Welcome to the Island' presentation, and introduce ourselves by name and animal."
She fumbled with the line for a moment before putting it aside, waiting to see how Shenzi reacted.

Shenzi laughed, the sound seeming a little strained. "Yeah, that might help some people. Would've been better then the rude awakening I had." She said with a shrug. "Umm, beaver, right?" Shenzi asked, her eyes falling to Chana's tail.

Boy...she could smell the tension in the air! Not a pleasant thing either.
"Right," she conceeded, a smile still plastered on her face. "I got an easy one to figure out." She busied herself for a moment by rearranging her fishing gear.
"It's okay if you're uncomfortable around us," she said quietly. "Just keep in mind that we all started as human as you." It was as far as Chana could bring herself to tell the other woman that it was rather obvious she didn't want to talk to a human-sized beaver. And she winced inwardly at how harsh it had come out. Ah well. Words couldn't be unspoken. That was life.

"It's not that, I don't want to be rude or anything." She said hurriedly, hoping she hadn't offended Chana. "It's just, I'm still trying to adjust to everything, all the damned changes." Shenzi said, rubbing the back of her neck as she sat in one of the shallower parts of the water.

"It's okay," Chana told her. "I actually fainted the first time I saw Amaya," she admitted. "I was just as shocked, and just as sure that it wouldn't happen to me."
"Needless to say, those hopes were shattered the first time I changed."

Unsure of who Amaya was, beyond another changed person, she could only nod in understanding. "I'm hoping it ******** up or something, though I'm pretty sure that's highly doubtful." She said, her shoulders drooping as she shrugged.
"Was-Was it painful?" Shenzi asked quietly, drawing her bare knees up to her chest.

Chana shrugged at the hope of the labs messing up. She didn't know much about them, and so reserved judgement. Besides, Lily had been one of them, and she was a perfectly nice person.
"It was very painful," the beaver admitted. "Fur kind of itched, but your whole body-type changing..." she shuddered in remembrance. "It's one of the most unpleasant things to happen to me. Probably as painful as the first time I had cramps and I hated taking pills." Her face darkened beneath the fur in a slight blush. "I was weeping with pain and finally gave in to the pills that time."

Any sort of hopeful look on her face slowly leeched away with every one of Chana's words. "Anyone ever try painkillers?" Shenzi asked; it seemed weird, but at the same time it didn't.

Chana blinked in surprise. "Well...not that I know of, but I'm hardly the village gossip," she admitted. "You could probably ask the labs. It couldn't hurt, at least."
Thank G-d that Shenzi was able to at least talk calmly about all of this. And even if she didn't quite believe that it would happen to her, she was taking steps to prepare. The beaver heartily approved of preparation.

At the mention of asking the doctors, Shenzi made a face. She didn't know Dr. Duvert very well, but she wasn't about to ask him about pain killers and transformations. She had a bottle of ibuproffen in her bag, she could probably take a couple of those every couple hours after a month from when she arrived. Maybe that'd take care of it.

Chana noticed Shenzi's expression, but deemed it wisest to not ask. She also thought it best to not wonder how many occupied duplexes there were now. What did that leave?
"Hmmm...out of curiosity, what did they tell you to get you here?" she queried. It was useful to know all the ruses that had been used; then she could think of arguments to be used against each for if or when she got to play "greeter" again. Chana sighed inwardly. They really should make a pamphlet or something.
