A Basic Introduction to Role Playing
Or “Kageka doesn’t know when to shut up”

This thread is for all those who …

1 – Don’t know how to Role Play.
2 – Want to try to become better Role Players.
3 – Would like to share their expertise and experience in Role Playing.

It will be run by myself and hopefully other experienced Role Players, and I hope that we can learn just as much as those who come here for the purpose of learning.

The goal is to teach everyone who visits to at least be on their way to being Semi-Lit.

In an effort to remain organized, I shall break this thread up into several parts.

Mary/Gary Sues – Why They Should Die
How To Write A Good Post

The remainder of the thread will be discussion on Role Playing. It will help new people to have a place to come and be taught by those more experienced.

If anyone would like to help me run this thread and teach others, then you are welcome and encouraged to do so. I am, by no means, an expert Role Player. I make mistakes, and I am not perfect. But keep in mind, neither are any of you. Until I get people volunteering to assist, this whole thread will be my thoughts, interpretations, and experiences with Role Playing.

Eventually, I would like to have something of a teaching Role Play. The best way to learn is by doing, so that would be something that would greatly benefit all new Role Players.

Above all, remember, everyone was new once. Be patient. If you come and start spouting insults and hate, I will ask you to leave the thread or to change your attitude, depending on how severe the insults. If you continue or get worse, I will report you to the guild moderators.

Have fun, and I hope my introduction to Role Playing is helpful to anyone who needs it.

Introduction to Role Playing

Role Playing is exactly what the title implies. You have a role and you are playing it. Unlike acting, which revolves around your body – the way you move, speak, and how you express yourself facially – Role Playing revolves around your mind. In Role Playing you use your mind to get into the mind of the character you are playing, and then you write out his or her thoughts, feelings, actions, and words. In essence, it is writing for more than one person.

Basic Concepts

Get out your writing utensils and index cards, it’s vocabulary time! This is a list of all of the basic terms, their abbreviations, and their definitions, which is really very helpful to know.

Role Playing (RP) – playing pretend for people with any kind of basic writing skills. Sometimes the characters are made up, sometimes they aren’t.

Out Of Character (OOC) – 1) when you are writing as you, not as the character. For example, you have a character that is a brother to another person’s character. It would be weird and OOC (definition 2) of you to have the character ask, so you use what I call OOC Bubbles to ask as yourself. OOC bubbles can be (()) {} () [] or any number of symbols you wish to use. 2) When your character says or does something that does not fit their personality. When the pacifist screams “Die, scum!!” or the vegan has a steak for lunch. It doesn’t fit them, so it is out of their character.

In Character (IC) – any post (supposedly all posts in an RP forum) that is in character. Also used as a command. For example, if there are several posts of plot discussion going on in the form of all OOC posts, then someone might demand that you “go IC.”

Original Character (OC) – a character that you have made up, even one that exists within a universe that is not yours. For example, you invent a companion for the 5th Doctor. The companion is your original character, even though you are within the Doctor Who universe.

Cannon Character (no abbreviation that I’ve ever seen, but we’ll say CC) – Cannon means to follow along the original plot, so a cannon character is not one that you have made up. For example, you are doing a Doctor Who RP and someone is playing Rose Tyler. She is a cannon character.

General Rules

These are some good guidelines for any RP, and probably rules that you’ll see when you first walk into an RP.

exclaim The one who created the RP should be respected. Nine times out of ten, they took the time to think of the plot, setting, and to post it. You should respect the work that goes into the first two of those, and the consideration that goes into the third. So listen to them and follow their rules. If you think that the one who created the RP is not worthy of your respect, then don’t say anything insulting – just leave if you’d been lurking or politely excuse yourself if not.

exclaim Mary/Gary Sues are out of the question unless it’s a parody. More on these nasty little buggers later.

exclaim Be smart about what you say. Don’t go into an RP being a jerk and then being insulted when no one likes you.

exclaim God modding and power playing are both out. Basically, God modding is when your character is indestructible and power playing is when you take control of another Rper’s character. Or it might be the other way around. Both are rude and should never be done unless with permission. For example, an RPer drops out of the RP. Instead of their character dripping off the face of the Earth, you kill them off.

exclaim Most of the time, RPing is a long-term investment. There’s nothing more frustrating than getting a good RP going, with a good plot, good characters, and good RPers, and then people just stop posting. A dead RP is no fun at all, so when you go into an RP, assume you’re in for a long haul. Maybe not all at the moment, but you will probably be posting in the RP for a few months.

exclaim If no one is interacting with your character, go interact with another character. It can be as simple as having your character bump into another as they’re passing each other in a hall. Nothing’s quite so sad as seeing someone RP by themselves.

Our Stories

If anyone would like to share how they got started in Role Playing, post or PM and I can put it here. I always think that there can be very interesting stories behind how people get started.

KagekaNecavi
I got my start in my freshman year of high school, so I’ve been RPing about three or four years. I started on a forum for my high school’s Anime Club, and was introduced right away to high level RPing. They taught me how and got me addicted. It was pretty advanced stuff right from the get go, so I have always been comfortable in that kind of an RP – stuff with good, solid plots, and nice, well rounded characters.

I will also keep a list here of the Role Players willing to offer assistance and what kinds of Role Plays they can do. If you wish to be added to the spiffy list of Role Players willing to assist, I’ll need you to PM me with your Gaia name, how long you’ve Role Played, what kinds of Role Playing you do, what genres you Role Play, and if you do Original Characters or Cannon Characters.

Grand List of People Willing to Assist
KagekaNecavi – About four years, both in IMs and forums. I RP mostly OCs, but can do cannon. The genres I RP are action, fantasy, science fiction, realistic, and some romance.

IM and Forum

There are two entirely different ways of RPing in an IM and a forum, depending on who your RPing partners are. The biggest thing about the two different formats is that they are NOT interchangeable.

An example of a forum RP excerpt would be something like this…
Forum Style
John walked into the room, quickly scanning to see if any seat were open in the crowded room. Fortunately there was, and he quickly sat in it, looking to the person sitting next to him. “I hope this seat wasn’t taken.”

That same RP sample can be written like this in an IM
IM Style
*walks in, looks around, and sits in the only open seat, speaking to the person next to him* I hope this seat wasn’t taken.

The reason there are such vast differences is that in a forum, you have time to take it slow, show more description, and show more thoughts. IM RPs are usually more action and speech driven.

Like I said before, you wouldn’t go into a forum and post like you would an IM. You’ll probably get called a n00b and get made fun of. There are forums where that’s the accepted kind of format for your posts, but not many. And in an IM, there is a limited word count, so it’s hard to fit forum-style posts in. it can be done, and I know people who RP like that over IM, but it’s not generally done.

Generally, in a forum, you use third person past tense. That is, “he walked.” In an IM, you usually use third person present when inside actions. That is, “he walks.”

Also, with the examples I gave, the forum excerpt might be part of a post, but in the IM, that would likely be all of the post.

Literate, Semi-Literate, Illiterate

Literate (Lit)
Semi-Literate (Semi, Semi-Lit)
Illiterate (n00b)

These are the three basic levels of RPing skill. I am considered by some to be Semi, by a lot to be Lit. It’s not just word count or anything like that, either. It’s how well you can get across the character. It’s hard to determine sometimes, and a lot of pepople consider word count to be a good indicator. A good RPer can get 200 words or more in a post every time, and a bad one can barely get in a paragraph – if that.

Literate - 349 words
Chances were, this was not going to be pleasant. No sir. Not only was this the first party of the year, John had never really gotten along with this crowd. He’d always been the nerd that was kind of cool, but never more than just “kind of.” And somehow he’d managed to get a chance of a lifetime – he was going to a keg party. This was his senior year and he hadn’t been to one party yet, never mind a keg party. This was his big chance, and chances were he would blow it.

You never knew, though. Maybe by some miracle, he would actually do something right and manage to get into the cool crowd. Maybe he’d get a girlfriend. Maybe he’d finally get some. The list of “maybe”s went on and on and on.

Who was he kidding – he couldn’t do this. Pigs would fly before he would fit in with that crowd. He would always be the odd man out. He wasn’t nerdy enough to be a nerd, and he wasn’t cool enough to be a cool kid. But he was too nerdy to be a cool kid and too cool to be a nerd. The school only had a few hundred people in it, too, and the cliques were broad enough that if you didn’t have a niche, you were a loner.

But John was sick of eating lunch alone, being picked last for projects, and being ignored. This was his big chance, and he wasn’t going to blow it.

Walking into the room, John scanned for an empty seat. At first he didn’t see any, but then he saw one next to a slim, pretty sophomore girl. He wasn’t sure of her name, as he had no classes with her, but he had a feeling it was Sharon. With a community as tiny as theirs, you got to know pretty much everyone’s names.

Deciding he had nothing to lose, John sat next to the girl and turned to her, liking the way she turned back to him. “I hope this seat wasn’t taken.”

Semi-Lit – 135 words
John was nervous. He’d never fit in with this group, but at the same time, he’d never fit in with anyone else, either. The school he went to was small, so you pretty much either fit into a clique or you were a loner. Since he was sick of that, John had to try.
Despite being a senior, this was his first party – at all. That meant this was one of his last chances to fit in. he had to take the chance, he just had to.
Going into the room, John looked around and found an empty seat by a sophomore whom he thought was named Sharon, though he wasn’t sure.
After briefly working up the courage to do so, John went over and sat next to her. “I hope this seat wasn’t taken.”

Illiterate – 14 words
John walked into the party and sat down. “I hope this seat wasn’t taken.”

Now, each of those were rather broad. Any post that is worse than my Semi-Lit example post is probably considered under Semi, but the Lit level probably comes in at about 250 or 300 words. Now, that’s just a general figure. If you can get good character description in between 150 and 200 words every time, then that’s great and chances are, you’re a Lit. But that same amount of words with okay character description might be considered Semi. It all depends on the amount of character description/development.

Mary/Gary Sues – Why They Should Die

A Mary and Gary Sue is, basically, a perfect character. The term is also applied to fan fiction, though I’m not sure who used it first – fan fiction authors or RPers. The best, and most common, example of a Mary Sue (the female form of the Beast) is the tall, skinny, blonde, smart, rich woman or girl. Gary Sues are the same thing, but with men. They are HORRIBLE characters. Not only does playing a Sue show that you are such a bad writer that you are incapable of creating a better character, but it also shows that you are likely just as shallow as the Sue.

There are other kinds of characters along that same level. I’ve never heard them referred to as any kind of Sue, but they are also the bane of your existence and must be avoided at all costs. They are the really stereotypical characters. For example, you have a geek character who has a pocket protector, bad acne even though he should have grown out of it by now, is incapable of having a conversation with a normal person, gets beat up all the time but never fights back, and has absolutely no athletic skill whatsoever. Or you have a stereotypical goth or emokid. Those stereotypes do not occur often in the world, but so many of them run around RP forums.

exclaim There is, however, one exception to the rule. Parodies. When you’re making fun of the goth or emokid. When you’re taking a stab at the perfect cheerleader. When you’re doing it just for laughs. A forum like that will likely have a warning at the beginning saying it’s a parody, but sometimes they don’t.

Now, how do you get around those bad characters? When you first think of your first character, base it around someone you know. If you want your character to be a computer geek, find one you know and base it around him. For example, most of the really geeky computer guys at my school are actually fairly skilled athletically. Two of them are cross-country stars, and quite a few of the rest of them are good martial artists. They’re also good to talk to, and most actually have fairly clear skin. That’s not your stereotypical geek at all, but those people are still geeks.

Another good way of getting around a bad character is to make a perfect character, then cut away at them and make them imperfect. Slice off some of their physical perfections and do the same with their personality. Take the tall, skinny blonde I mentioned in the first paragraph and make her a klutz, annoying to be around, and quite a bit of an airhead. Or do something different to make the character more human.

How To Write A Good Post

Now to the tricky bit. Actually writing a good post. There are two basic different kinds of posts – intros and regular posts.

An intro is the first post your character has in an RP. It’s where you show who and what your character is. There are a few basic Dos and Don’ts for intros. Now, these are just guidelines. You can use one and not another in the same post and it’ll still be fine.
crying Don’t say “she had long black hair”
biggrin Do say “she ran her hand through her long hair, inspecting the dark strands in boredom”
crying Don’t say “she was a klutz”
biggrin Do say “she tripped over her own two feet and glanced around to make sure no one saw”
crying Don’t say “she was a nice person”
biggrin Do say “a ways away someone was being picked on, and she felt a flare of injustice in her”

Basically, don’t tell us what your character is like. Show us what your character is like. That’s the best way to be a good RPer.

An intro will normally be the easiest to write, simply because you are describing how your character is reacting to this particular situation. Take things about the surrounding and show how your character responds to those things. That’s the best way to show us what your character is like.

A regular post is a little different. We already know the basics about your character, and we want to know more. Explain to us with your character’s thoughts and memories why they are saying and doing certain things. Give us a little more of your character’s background and personality with each post. Even if you character isn’t developed completely when you start, then they will develop almost on their own over time.

That’s all assuming you’re using an original character. Now what about cannon characters? The best way to write them is to think of what they do in the cannon universe. How they react. Take the situation that they’re in now, and find a situation in the cannon universe that’s similar. That will show you about how the character will react to things. You still want to follow the same basic ideas for posting, and a lot of it will come from you, but you’ll have a base upon which to work.

wahmbulance And no matter if you use an original or cannon character, please for the love of God use some kind of spell checker!! wahmbulance
I, personally, type up my posts in Microsoft Word and then post them in the forum.

Yeah, sure it does. Do you want to be put on my list of people who are available/willing to assist new RPers?

Myself, I recently started entering RPs with the intention of having my character killed in the first fight they end up in.
Seeing as most RPs are practically a free-for-all, I don't last long.
I just got sick of fights taking up 15 posts. It's like an anime where each fight takes three episodes to end. Just die! Stop dodging EVERYTHING and start taking hits!

I'll help new RPers. However, I have been referred to as a Grammar Nazi before...

Yay! We need a Grammar Nazi. Though I'm not sure how that not-quite politically correct term will be taken. But being a stickler for proper grammar and spelling is good. Very good.

Anyone who thinks it's politically incorrect should probably get off the internet now.
