Richard really missed his right arm. He had just finished doing the physical therapy excerises the labs had given him before coming to the cafeiteria and the limb throbbed like an open wound. The slightest movement or bump sent shooting pains Richard's up right side.

Coming to the cafe immediately after the exercises was proving to be an unwise decision. He was sure food would make him feel better, but getting at it was proving to be very difficult. It was perhaps a comical juggling act for anyone on camera duty. He moved down the buffet line, his cane clenched under his left arm, a tray in his hand, trying to keep it balanced under the large pile of various foodstuff piled on it. He walked with a stiff legged waddle as he tried not to drop anything or disturb his right arm.

He found himself wishing his little arms would make themselves useful instead of uselessly parroting the orginals.

Zach walked into the cafeteria as was routine, grabbing a tray and soon making off with a bowl of water and a raw steak. The surprise visit by Annie to the truth or dare game that had been played on the beach was unnerving, but it had taught him once again to never leave the village. His tail swished slowly along the waxed floor, much calmer than he'd been in a few days.

With his standard meal and a couple of utensils good to go, he turned around. The cafeteria seemed empty save for one old guy with a couple tentacles and a back problem. Impatient, he flapped his wings and found another route around the tables to sit off in the far corner. Like hell was he going to acknowledge the other man's presence.

Richard hadn't noticed Zachery until the dragon man had circled around him. At first he didn't recognize him as he only got a good view of Zachery's back. Which was fortunate for him becuase's Richard's reaction was immediate. The tentacles coiled and struck before Richard could stop them. They hit... nothing but air for Zach was a good two feet out of their range by the time to recognition had struck. They snapped back like two huge rubber bands.

"s**t!" Richard exclaimed. The tray fell to the floor with a crash and his cane clattered to the floor. Richard doubled over, clutching his right shoulder. Unfortunately for him several of the muscles that anchored tentacles we attached to his shoulder, and when they had missed quite a bit of that momentum had been transfered to his shoulder.

Richard looked at the ground for the moment, waiting for the pain to fade.

Tentacles or not, Zach hadn't felt the other man would be threatening in the least, and had continued to pay him no mind as he walked over to a table in the corner. He had just set his tray down when there was an exclamation and a huge noise that made him jump and hiss. He turned immediately to the source, frill flared and claws scrabbling on the tabletop for a grip while his heart leapt to his throat. His now slightly worn hat was knocked sideways a little from his sudden movements despite being hooked over both long horns, and Zach had to right it with a hand.

For a second it looked like the old man had had a heart attack or something similar, but if that were the case he was gripping at the wrong place. His tail curled around his feet, still tense from the shock. He didn't take kindly to being scared. When the man continued to stay upright and made no further noises, Zach figured there couldn't be that much a problem and flipped a chair around to sit down in with an apathetic snort. Not his problem.

Richard pulled himself up and glared at Zach. The tentacle strike had caught him completely off guard, later he'd might file attacking someone back under things he never would have done before coming to the island, but right now he was focused on one thing. Zach. And through him, Ginvera.

"How's your lady friend in the lab coat doing Zachery?" His voice was calm, almost friendly, the contrast with the ice cold eyes was spooky. A little voice inside of him screamed at him to back down. He was still injured.
But he wanted to see what kind of person this dragon was without his masters around.

Zach had just picked up his knife when the man spoke again, this time using addressing him by name. It took him a moment to realize what the man was implying, and when it hit him, his bad mood only worsened. Great, someone had told a new guy about the incident with Aubrey. It was beyond him who, but he supposed it was probably common knowledge at this point.

He set the knife down and leaned one arm against the table to prop his head up with. Though his expression seemed bored, his voice was quick and defensive. "Who, Dr. Lockheart? She's alive, I'm sure. But that incident was months ago. If something happened to her lately, it wasn't me."

Richard squinted at him. Aubrey? Was he actually that dense or was he being coy? Richard wasn't in the mood to beat around the bush. He bent down to retrieve his cane from the floor. When he stood up he addressed Zach in formal tone.

"Dr. Lockheart? Don't play dumb. Surely you remember Ginvera? She was holding your leash."

Had the dragon been so drunk that he didn't remember mauling him?

Zach bristled at the barely disguised 'pet' insult that the old man threw at him. He was not anyone's pet. So he had befriended the doctor who'd created his serum rather than continue a pointless struggle - how was that hard for people to understand? This was getting unbelievable.

"I have no idea who you're talking about. Maybe you're going senile." He stared silently for a minute, with absolute disgust on his face. Slowly, he rose to his feet, though he stayed next to his chair. "Were you implying something?"

The name Ginverva had struck him as vaguely recognizable - some woman in a cat getup he'd met during Halloween. Not that he remembered much else about her. Whatever this guy was trying to say must've been twisted by some conversation with Rex or Thom or even Gaius. As long as the man didn't know anything about Aubrey's mauling, he felt slightly better.

Richard deflated a little. It was hard to stay angry when Zach didn't appearently remember anything. He wasn't sure what he was looking for from Zach. An Apology maybe? That might be acceptable. A realization of what he had been defending would be better. Ginvera's insinuations that the villagers were no more than animals still ran through his head during unguarded moments.

He made a disgusted face and sighed with frustration. "You call me senile. Hmpf." Richard turned away as he fumbled with the buttons on his shirt. Undoing buttons one handed wasn't that hard anymore, it took but thirty seconds before he turned back to Zach. He pulled the shirt back from his chest revealing three jagged slash marks across his chest, which looked swollen. The black stiches had not yet been taken out. Richard winced a bit as he to move the sling to reveal the wounds.

"Does that jog your memory? You should recognize them."

"Yes, I did," he stated simply, watching warily as the man turned around. Was he concealing some sort of weapon? His eyes darted around the room worriedly, hoping that someone competent was watching the cameras this time. His jaw was still sore from Gaius's punch.

When his attention returned to the tentacled annoyance some feet away, he had to immediately look away, shielding his view with both hands. He hadn't come to the cafeteria look at some deformed old man's chest. "Hey!"

He saw the slashes, all right, which correlated immediately with something he'd noticed the morning after Halloween. There had been blood on his claws when he'd woken up in that graveyard. Sabin hadn't said a word about it when he'd last spoken with him, which set his mind at ease, but that temporary comfort was ruined swiftly with this. Had he really attacked another person? He'd been quite drunk, he couldn't remember hardly a thing from the Halloween party or whatever happened after, but judging by the hostile attitude the old man was giving him, there was no other alternative. Then again, the kind of comments he was making were the stuff that made Zach want to rip Gaius's throat out, and those were thoughts he had while sober. Inexcusable nonetheless. He wasn't supposed to let his rage get the better of him, not when he really could hurt people.

He'd have to make sure, though. Still blocking the old man from his line of sight with his hands, he tried acting casually ignorant. "Hm, should I?"

The utter lack of visable guilt on Zach part infuriated Richard to no end. He would have accepted an apology of some sort but the flat denial, was just disgusting. He pulled his shirt closed. He shouldn't need to spell it out his attacker. Was it even worth it?

No not really. "Keep your claws to yourself." Richard growled. "Next time I won't hesitate." To do what? Richard really had no idea, but he let the threat lie. He should have never allowed Zach to get so close him at the Halloween party.

With a sigh and a shake of the head Richard turned to go. He felt defeated. But how do you make someone realize how horrible they were if they didn't remember their actions?

“Is that supposed to be a threat?” he asked icily, still standing beside the table. The raw steak he’d heaped onto his plate reeked of blood, a maddening smell that emboldened him. There was no such thing as an empty threat on this island. He’d learned that after several brushes with death that made losing an entire limb seem like almost trivial in comparison. At the very least he wanted to know what this old man thought he could do.

It was exasperating to see the man turn to leave so suddenly after that curt statement. Who did he think he was? Zach wasn’t intimidated by him, not in the least. And it was a blow to anyone’s dignity to let an old man think he’d come out on top from a verbal skirmish. Zach scooted around his backward chair and stalked toward the other man, though staying what he felt was a safe distance away. The fallen tray had made a mess he wasn’t about to step on with bare feet, though. “Hey! You! Where the hell do you think you’re going?”

Richard wanted to just stalk off but he wasn't about to leave his back exposed to someone as dangerous as Zach. Slowly, he faced Zach again. His tentacles coiling like snakes about to strike over his shoulders. Zach was still to far away and if Richard had his way it would stay that way. They had been strong enough to knock Laihm over, but Zach was much larger than the geeky network admin. And if the tentacles adhered to the scales instead of snapping back they'd be in range of Zach's claws. While Richard wished this tentacles weren't there in the first place, the propect of them getting cut off did not fill him with happy thoughts.

It would be better end this peacefully. If Zach took another step he'd be forced to do something. No way he was going to get torn up again. He eyed Zach warily.

"Look Son, If your life was so screwed up that this," Gesturing at the surroundings with the tip of his cane, "is a reasonable alterative. Then that's your bussiness. I certianly have no quarrel with Colche. But when you'll defend a staff member after she laughs and clearly revels at the death of innocent islanders to the point of volience." He paused and gave Zach a cold stare. "Then I want nothing to do with you."

Zach glanced at the wiggling tentacles, but they looked so skinny he could snap them in two if he caught one. If the old man waving them around behind him was supposed to be threatening, the gesture was ruined by their overall sickly appearance. He returned his attention to the bulky old man when the cane was waved around, taking one step backward. His tail swept along the ground as he did, attempting to balance. He was still stuck seething over the ‘leash’ comment. He didn’t want to hurt the man, not after he had apparently already done so, but he could at least scare the guy a little bit by moving closer. Not too close, though – he didn’t need another punch to the face.

“Hate to break it to you, but I don’t remember what happened at the Halloween thing. But since you were just trying to insinuate that because I happen to like it here I’m just a pet,” he spat the word out as though it were poisonous even to say it, taking a careful step over the fallen tray and a few more forward for good measure, “then it’s no stretch of the imagination to think you must’ve been asking for what I did to you.”

Goddamnit! This was exactly where Richard didn't want to be. But the stubborn old man wasn't about to turn tale and run. Although it would probably be prudent at this point.

"Stay back!" A slight growl entering his voice. Richard has have trouble finding that fatalistic center and not care what Zach did to him. Rather the logical voice in his head told him the labs would stop short of that point leaving with another set of claw marks in his body. Richard wasn't afraid of dying but pain was definitely something he wished to avoid.

When Zach took another step Richard decide he had to make good on his promise to both himself and to Zach. He shifted his gaze downward on the foot that Zach was extending infront of him, relaxing his safety as he did so. The tentacles struck, One hit Zach's shin, its club adhereing to his scaley skin. The other slamed into the tray Zach was stepping over with a loud bang. The tentacle then attempted to retract carrying the leg and the tray with them.
