Lore:
Robert Johnson
Robert Leroy Johnson (May 8, 1911 – August 16, 193 cool is among the most famous Delta Blues musicians and arguably the most influential. Considered by some to be the "Grandfather of Rock-and-Roll," his vocal phrasing, original songs, and guitar style influenced a range of musicians, including Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, U2, and Eric Clapton, who called Johnson "the most important blues musician who ever lived."
Of all the great blues musicians, Johnson was probably the most obscure. All that is known of him for certain is that he recorded 29 songs; he died young; and he was one of the greatest bluesmen of the Mississippi Delta. There are only five dates in Johnson's life that can undeniably be used to assign him to a place in history, everything else about his life is an attempt at reconstruction.
Interestingly, six of Johnson's blues songs mention the devil or some form of the supernatural.
Esu and the Crossroads Legends
The deity Esu was believed to be the guardian of the crossroads, and was an intermediate between gods and humans. When Christianity was brought to African Culture, these pagan gods were labeled as being similar to the devil. Hence, the concept that one could find the devil at a crossroad. In Celtic tradition, the bodies of the unholy were buried outside of town near crossroads to preserve consecrated ground.
Black Dogs
A black dog is a ghostly presence found primarily in British folklore. The black dog is essentially a nocturnal being, and its appearance is regarded as a foreshadowing of death. It is larger than a physical dog, and often has large, glowing eyes. It is often associated with electrical storms, crossroads, places of executioner and ancient pathways. In Norfolk legend the creature is supposed to be amphibious, coming out of the sea at night and traveling the lonely roads.
Hellhounds
A demonic dog of hell, usually referring to Cerberus, the dog of Hades from Greek mythology. The ghostly hounds are said to haunt parts of the United Kingdom and many names are given to the apparitions. Black Shuck of East Anglia, Moddey Dhoo of the Isle of Man, Gwyllgi of Wales.
Goofer Dust
Used in voodoo practices, it is a mixture of natural ingredients that can be used to cause harm, trouble, or even kill. The word goofer comes from the Kikongo word “kufwa,” which means “to die.” As late as the 1930s, “goofering” was a regional synonym for voodooing, and the meaning of the term was broadened beyond spells of damage, illness, and death to include love spells cast with dominating intent.

Quotes:
Sam: So much for a low profile. You’ve got a warrant in St. Louis and now you’re officially in the Feds’ database. Dean: (laughs) Dude, I’m like Dillinger or something. Sam: Dean it’s not funny. Makes the job harder, we gotta be more careful now. Dean: What do they got on you? Sam: I’m sure they just.. haven’t posted it yet. Dean: What no accessory, nothin? Sam: Shuddap. Dean: (laughs) You’re jealous. Sam: No I’m not. Dean: Uh huh. Alright, what do you got on the case there you innocent, harmless young man, you?
Sam: In fact the authorities are a little confused as to how a wild dog could get past the doorman, take the elevator up, and start roaming the halls of the cushiest joint in town.
Sam: But anyways, whatever they are, they’re big, nasty… Dean: Man, bet they could hump the crap out of your leg. Look at that one, huh? (chuckles, Sam sighs) What? They could.
Sam: So? Dean: Secretary’s name is Carly. She’s 23, she uh kayaks, and they’re real. Sam: You didn’t happen to ask her if she’s seen any black dogs lately, didja? Dean: Every complaint called in this week about anything big, black or dog-like. There’s nineteen calls in all, and uh.. I donno what this thing is. (hands Sam yellow post-it) Sam: (laughs)You mean Carly’s Myspace address? Dean: Yeah, Myspace. What the hell is that? (Sam laughs again) Seriously, is that like, some sort of porn site?
Dean: I swear... if this is another freakin' Pomeranian barking in the neighbor's yard...
Dean: Yahtzee.
Dean: Cross Roads are where pacts are made. These people are actually makin deals with the damn thing. You know, cause that always ends good. Sam: They’re seein dogs alright. But not black dogs, they’re seein hell hounds. Demonic pit bulls. Dean: Whoever this demon is, it’s back and it’s collecting. And that doctor lady? Wherever she’s running, she ain’t running fast enough.
Sam: We gotta find out if anyone else struck any bargains around here. Dean: Great. So we gotta clean up these people’s mess for em? I mean they’re not exactly squeaky clean. Nobody put a gun to their head and forced em to play ‘let’s make a deal’. Sam: So what? We should just leave em to die? Dean: Somebody goes over Niagara in a barrel, you gonna jump in and try to save em? Sam: Dean.. Dean: Alright.. Fine.
Sam: What’s this guy’s name again? Dean: George Darrow. Apparently quite the regular at Lloyd’s. Or is this house, probably ain’t up next on MTV cribs is it. Sam: Yeah, so whatever kinda deal he made.. Dean: Wasn’t for cash. Ahh who knows place is full of babes in princess Leia bikinis. (Sam sighs and shakes his head) I’m just sayin this guy’s got one epic bill come due. Hopin’ least he asked for something fun.
Sam: Lookit that. (pointing to bottom of door) Dean: What is that, pepper? (door opens) George: Who the hell are you? Dean: George Darrow? George: I’m not buyin anything. Dean: Woah, woah, looks like you went for the wrong shaker there. Huh, usually when you wanna keep something evil out, you go for the salt. George: I donno whatchu talkin about.
Sam: So what is that stuff out front? George: Gopher dust. You boys think you know somethin bout somethin but not gopher dust? (throws bag of dust to Dean) Dean: Well, we know a little about a lot of things, just enough to make us dangerous. Sam: What is it? George: Hoodoo. My grandma taught me. Keeps out demons. Dean: Heh.. demons we know. George: Well then, keep it. Maybe it’ll do you some good. Four minutes left. Sam: Mr. Darrow. We know you’re in trouble- Dean: Yah., that you got yourself into. Sam: But it’s not hopeless, alright? There’s gotta be something we can do. George: Listen.. I get that you boys wanna help. But sometimes, a person makes their bed and they just got ta lie down in it. I’m the one called that demon in the first place. Dean: What’d you do it for? George: I was weak. I mean who don’t want to be great? Who don’t want their life to mean somethin. I just.. I just never thought about the price. Dean: Was it worth it? George: Hell no. Course I asked for talent. Shoulda gone for fame. I’m still broke.. and lonely. Just now I got this pile of paintings no body wants. But that wasn’t the worst. Sam: Go on. George: Demon didn’t leave. I never counted on that. After our deal was done, damn thing stayed at Lloyds for a week, just chattin.. makin more deals. I tried to warn folks, but who gonna listen to an old drunk? Sam: How many others are there? George: Uh.. this architect, a doctor lady, I kept up with them. They been in the papers.. least they got famous. Dean: Who else George, come on think. George: One more. Uh.. nice guy too.. Hudson. Evan I think. I donno what he asked for. Don’t matter now. We done for. Sam: No, no there’s gotta be a way. George: You don’t get it. I don’t want a way. Sam: Look you don’t want- George: Look! I called that thing! I brought it on myself! I brought it on them. I’m goin to hell one way or another. All I wants to finish my last paintin.. day or two. I’m done. I’m just tryin to hold them off till then. Buy a little time. Ok boys, time you went. Go help somebody that wants help. Sam: We can't just- George: Get out!!! I got work to do. Sam: You don’t really wanna die.. George: I don’t? I’m.. I’m tired.
Evan: Yes? Sam: Evan Hudson? Evan: Yeah. Dean: You ever been to a bar called Lloyd’s? Woulda been about ten years ago. (Even slams door in Deans face) Come on! We’re not demons! Sam: Any other bright ideas? (Dean kicks in door, they walk in to the house and come upon another Door. Dean goes to kick it in) Sam: (stops Dean mid-kick) Wait- (opens door, gives Dean a ‘you-could-be-a-bit-more-subtle’ look)
Evan: I don’t wanna die. Dean: Of course you don’t, not now. Sam: Dean, stop. Dean: What’d you ask for anyway Ev, huh? Never need Viagra, bowl a perfect game, what? Evan: .. My wife. Dean: Hahaha.. right.. Getting the girl, well that’s worth a trip to hell for.. Sam: Dean, stop.. Evan: No.. He’s right I made the deal. Nobody twisted my arm, that uh.. woman.. or whatever she was at the bar, she said I could have anything I wanted. I thought she was nuts at first but.. I don’t know how s- I was desperate. Sam: Desperate? Evan: (pause) Julie was dying. Dean: (looks taken aback) You did it to save her? Evan: She had cancer, they had stopped treatment, they were moving her into hospice, they kept saying.. ‘matter of days’. So yah, I made the deal, and I’d do it again. I’d have died for her on the spot. Dean: Did you ever think about her in all this? Evan: I DID this for her. Dean: You sure about that? (walks forward) I think you did it for yourself. So you wouldn’t have to live without her. But guess what, she’s gonna have to live without you now. And what if she knew how much it cost. What if she knew it cost your soul. How do you think she’d feel. Sam: Ok that’s enough. (touches Dean on the arm) Evan, sit tight alright? (Dean walks away) We’re gonna figure this out. (Sam goes to follow Dean into the hall) You alright? Dean: Yeah, why wouldn’t I be? Hey I got an idea. You throw a ‘George’s Hoodoo’ at that hell hound keep it away from Evan as long as you can. I’m gonna go to the cross roads and summon the demon. Sam: Summon th-.. are you nuts? Dean: (purses lips) Maybe a little. But I can trap it. I can exorcise it and I can buy us time to figure out somethin more permanent.. Sam: Yeah, but how much time? Dean: Ionno, a while. But it’s not easy for those suckers to claw their way back from hell and into the sunshine. Sam: No.. no way. Dean: Not allowed to say no Sammy, unless you got a better idea. Sam: Dean you can forget it alright? I’m not letting you summon that demon. Dean: Why not? Sam: Cause I don’t like where your head is at right now. That’s why not. Dean: What are you talking about? Sam: You know you’ve been on edge ever since we found that cross roads dean and I think I know why. Dean: (starts walking away) We really don’t have time for this. Sam: Dad. You think maybe dad made one of these deals huh? Hell.. I’ve been thinking it. I’m sure you’ve been thinking it too. Dean: (thinking.. penetrating gaze.. not disagreeing) It fits donnenit?.. I’m alive, dad’s dead. Yellow-eyed demon was involved. What if he did? What if he struck a deal? My life for his soul. Even: (through the wall) I think I hear it, it’s out side. Dean: Just keep him alive, ok? Sam: (worried) Dean..! Dean: Go!
Dean: I want Evan Hudson released from his contract. Demon: So sorry darling.. that’s not negotiable. Dean: I’ll make it worth your while. Demon: Oh really? What are you offering? Dean: Me. Demon: Well, well, well.. You’d sacrifice your life for someone else’s.. like father like son. You did know about your dad’s deal right? His life for yours? Oh I didn’t make the deal myself but boy I wish I had. Dean: (trying not to let her affect him, opens car door) After you. Demon: Such a gentleman. (about to step into car, sees devil’s trap on the ground) A devil’s trap? You’ve got to be kidding me. Stupid, stupid, stupid.. (slams door) I should rip you limb from limb. Dean: Take your best shot. Demon: .... No.. I don’t think so. I’m not gonna put you out of your misery. Dean: Oh yeah, why not? Demon: Cause your misery’s the whole point. It’s too much fun to watch. Knowing how your daddy died for you. How he sold his soul.. I mean, that’s gotta hurt. He’s all you ever think about. You wake up, and your first thought is, ‘I can’t do this anymore’. You’re all lit up with pain. I mean you loved him SO much.. and it’s all your fault. (laughs) You blew it Dean. I could have given you what you need. Dean: What do I need? Demon: Your father. I could have brought him back. Your loss.. see ya Dean. I wish you a nice long life. (turns and walks away) Dean: (thinks for a few seconds) Hold on. Demon: You’re lucky I’ve got a soft spot for lost puppies and long faces.. I just can’t leave you like this. Besides, you didn’t call me here to bargain for Evan. Not really. Dean: Can you bring him back? My dad? Demon: Course I can. Just as he was. Your dad would live and long natural life. Like he was MEANT to. That’s a promise. Dean: What about me? Demon: I can give you ten years. Ten long good years with him. That’s a life time. A family can be together again.. John, Dean, Sammy.. The Winchester boys all reunited. Look, your dad’s suppose to be alive, you’re supposed to be dead. So we’ll just set things straight. Put things back in their natural order. And you get ten extra years on top. (whispers) That’s a bonus. (Dean looks completely devastated and completive throughout) Dean: You think you could..... throw in a set of steak knives? Demon: You know this smartass self defense mechanism of yours (stops, looks up, sees devil’s trap).. (warningly) DEAN... Dean: Now you’re really trapped. That’s gotta hurt. Demon: Let. Me out. NOW. Dean: Sure, we just gotta make a little deal here first. You call off your hell hound and let Evan go. Then I’ll let you go. Demon: I can’t break a binding contract. Dean: Hmm... and by ‘can’t’ you mean ‘don’t want to’? Last chance. Evan and his wife get to live to a ripe old age. Going, going- Demon: Let’s talk about this.. Dean: Ok, gone. Demon: What are you doing? Dean: Oh you’re just gonna go on a little trip. Way down south. Demon: Look, forget Evan, think of your dad. Dean: (thinks for a second then starts reading exorcism verse)
Dean: (Demon kisses Dean vigorously) What the hell was that for? Demon: Sealing the deal. Dean: You know, I usually like to be warned before I’m violated with demon tongue. Demon: Evan Hudson is free. He and his wife will live lives. Dean: How do I know you’re not lying? Demon: My word is my bond. Dean: Ho really? Demon: It IS when I make a deal. It’s the rules. You got what you wanted. Now let me go. (Dean steps back, still holding rosary and looks at book) You’re gonna double cross me? Funny how I’m the trustworthy one. You know.. you renig.. send me to hell.. sooner or later I’m gonna climb out and skinning Evan Hudson will be the first thing that I do. (Dean puts the book away and breaks the Devil’s Trap circle) I gotta tell you.. You would have never pulled that stunt if you knew. Dean: Knew what? Demon: Where your dad is. You should have made that deal. See people talk about hell, but it’s just a word. It doesn’t even come close to describing the real thing. Dean: Shut your mouth b***h. Demon: If you could see your poor daddy, hear the sounds he makes cause he can't even scream- Dean: How bout I send you back there. (goes to grab demon but she leaves the host)
Sam: Demons lie all the time right? Maybe she was lying. Dean: Come on.. is that really what you think?... How could he do it? Sam: He did it for you. Dean: Exactly. How am I supposed to live with that? You know, the thought of him.. wherever he is right now. I mean he spent his whole life chasing that yellow-eyed son-of-a-b***h. He should have gone out fighting. That was supposed to be his legacy. You know? Not bargaining with the damn thing. Not this. Sam: How many people do you think dad saved.. in total? Dean: That’s not the point Sam. Sam: Evan Hudson is safe because of what dad taught us. That’s his legacy Dean. Now we’re still here man. So we gotta keep goin. For him. Hey, Dean? Dean: Yeah? Sam: When you were trapping that demon, you weren’t... I mean, it was all a trick, right? You never considered actually making that.. deal.. right? (Dean looks ahead at the road.. his eyes shift slightly away.. he then turns up the music loud leaving Sammy saddened and unnerved)

The episode she's talking about is Help from the seventh season. It's about Cassie, the blonde girl with the purple in it. She appeared again as the first in Conversations With Dead People, supposedly speaking to Willow for Tara, but really she was the First.
and that episode was go good. I loved the angst and the one-liners. It all was so well working together. And it made me cry.

I'm sure part of him is regretting the decision he made... gonk
